All RRB Group D posts are in Pay Level 1 of the 7th CPC, which runs from ₹18,000 to ₹56,900. Basic pay rises by about 3% with each annual increment, due on 1 January or 1 July. The 6th CPC band of ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 with ₹1,800 grade pay, still quoted in some older notices, was replaced in 2016.
The first 11 cells of Level 1 cover roughly the first 10 years of service.

RRB Group D in-hand salary per month
In-hand pay differs by city mainly because of HRA (30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay for X, Y and Z cities) and transport allowance (₹1,350 in the 19 higher-rate cities and ₹900 elsewhere, plus DA). Figures for a fresher on ₹18,000 basic pay at 60% DA:

Night duty allowance: how it is calculated
Under Railway Board order RBE 83/2020, the hourly rate is (basic pay + DA) ÷ 200. Each hour worked between 10 pm and 6 am earns 10 minutes of weightage, and that weightage is what gets paid. For a fresher, (₹18,000 + ₹10,800) ÷ 200 = ₹144 an hour. A full 10 pm to 6 am shift gives 8 × 10 = 80 minutes of weightage, which is about ₹192. Eight such night shifts in a month add about ₹1,536 to pay. The order caps eligibility at a basic pay of ₹43,600, and a supervisor must certify the night duty.
Worked example: first-month pay slip of a Track Maintainer
Take a new Track Maintainer Grade IV in a Z-class division living in a railway quarter, a common case since about half of CEN 09/2025 posts are for Track Maintainers. The quarter means no HRA, but the post gets the risk and hardship allowance that other Group D posts do not. The slip assumes a full month of service and no night duty.

At ₹24,200, transport allowance moves to the higher slab of ₹1,800 plus DA under Railway Board order RBE 96/2017. That is why TA jumps in the last row.
MACP after 10 years: moving to Level 2
If a Group D employee is not promoted after 10 years of regular service and meets the "Very Good" benchmark, the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme moves them to Level 2. A notional Level 1 increment (₹24,200 to ₹24,900) comes first, and pay is then fixed at the next Level 2 cell, ₹25,200. In a Y city at 60% DA, that is about ₹48,240 gross and ₹44,178 in-hand, roughly ₹1,640 a month more than staying in Level 1. Further upgrades come at 20 and 30 years. The calculation is illustrative; actual fixation depends on increment dates.
RRB Group D vs RRB NTPC Level 2 salary
Many aspirants apply for both Group D and NTPC (Undergraduate). Here is a Group D fresher against NTPC Level 2 and Level 3 freshers, all in a Y-class city at 60% DA:

FAQs on RRB Group D salary 2026
Q1. What is the monthly salary of RRB Group D employees in 2026?
An RRB Group D employee starts at a basic pay of ₹18,000 in Level 1 of the 7th Pay Commission. With 60% DA, HRA and transport allowance, a new joinee's gross monthly salary is about ₹32,040 in a Z-class city, ₹33,840 in a Y-class city and ₹36,360 in an X-class city.
Q2. How much salary does an RRB Group D employee receive in hand?
After the 10% NPS or UPS contribution (₹2,880) and the ₹30 CGEGIS deduction, a fresher takes home about ₹29,130 to ₹33,450 a month, depending on the city. An employee living in a railway quarter gets no HRA, so take-home pay is about ₹27,330 before the licence fee.
Q3. What is the starting basic salary for RRB Group D posts?
The starting basic pay for every RRB Group D post is ₹18,000 a month, the first cell of Level 1 in the 7th CPC pay matrix. It is the same for Track Maintainer Grade IV, Pointsman-B and all the Assistant posts, and it rises by about 3% with each annual increment.
Q4. What is the RRB Group D pay scale under the 7th Pay Commission?
RRB Group D posts are in Pay Level 1, which runs from ₹18,000 to ₹56,900. The ₹5,200 to ₹20,200 pay band with ₹1,800 grade pay belongs to the 6th Pay Commission and no longer applies, although some older notices and websites still quote it.
Q5. Which allowances and benefits are available to RRB Group D employees?
Group D employees get Dearness Allowance, HRA or a railway quarter, transport allowance, and night duty allowance where it applies. Track Maintainers also get a risk and hardship allowance of ₹3,375 a month. Other benefits include treatment at railway hospitals, privilege passes, a 78-day productivity linked bonus, and an NPS or UPS pension.
Q6. What is the monthly salary of a Track Maintainer in Indian Railways?
A Track Maintainer Grade IV starts on ₹18,000 basic pay. Take a Track Maintainer in a Z-class division who lives in a railway quarter. With 60% DA, transport allowance and the ₹3,375 risk and hardship allowance, gross pay is about ₹33,615. Net pay is about ₹30,705 after NPS and CGEGIS, before the licence fee and any night duty allowance.
Q7. How much does a Pointsman earn in Indian Railways?
A Pointsman-B joins at Level 1 with ₹18,000 basic pay, so gross pay is the same as for other Group D posts: about ₹32,040 to ₹36,360 a month, depending on the city. Pointsmen often work night shifts at stations, so night duty allowance can add to this each month.
Q8. How much can an RRB Group D employee earn after five years?
After five annual increments, basic pay reaches ₹20,900. At today's 60% DA and Y-class HRA, gross pay would be about ₹39,060 and take-home pay about ₹35,686 a month. Actual pay will be higher, because DA is revised twice a year, and any 8th Pay Commission revision would also apply.
Q9. What deductions are included in the RRB Group D salary slip?
The main deduction is the 10% employee contribution to NPS or UPS, worked out on basic pay plus DA. For a fresher, that is ₹2,880. Other deductions are CGEGIS (₹30), state professional tax where it applies, and the licence fee for a railway quarter. At this salary, income tax is nil under the new regime.
Q10. What career advancement opportunities are available to RRB Group D employees?
Group D employees who are not promoted get financial upgrades under MACP after 10, 20 and 30 years of service. They can also be promoted within their department, for example through the Track Maintainer grades. They can also sit departmental exams for Group C posts such as clerk, technician and station staff.
