Early Life 

Dr. V. Narayanan was born in Melakattu village near Nagercoil in the Kanyakumari district. He did schooling in his hometown after schooling he earned a Diploma in mechanical engineering (DME), and he achieved an associate membership in mechanical engineering from the Institution of Engineers (AIME). He attended the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur to pursue a Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Cryogenic Engineering. He also has a Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering.

Professional Careers

BHEL

After completing his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering (DME), he started working in the private sector. Initially, he worked in companies like Tl Diamond Chain Ltd, Madras Rubber Factory, and Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL).

 

ISRO

After this, he joined the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 1984 and served in several positions. In January 2018, he was appointed as the director of the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre (LPSC). He also helped to create the solid propulsion systems for the Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV).

 

Project Director 

Present ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan worked as the Project Director for the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark III (GSLV Mk III) C25 Crynogenic Project. It uses Liquid Oxygen and Liquid Hydrogen to power a 20-ton thrust engine. After the developments, the GSLV MK III project was successfully launched.

Contributions

  • Present ISRO Chairman Dr. V. Narayanan contributed to the process of planning, control, and realization of the Ablative Nozzle System, composite motor cases, and composite igniter cases.

  • With his guidance, the LPSC of ISRO delivered 183 Liquid Propulsion Systems and Control Power Plants.

  • His Notable achievement was his role as Project Director for the GSLV Mk III’s C25 Cyrogenic Project, Environmental Control and Safety Systems, and Propulsion Systems for the service and crew modules.
