The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of international importance is a global agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, particularly regarding waterfowl habitat. Another name for it is the Convention on Wetlands. It is the name of the Iranian city of Ramsar, where the conventions were signed in the year 1971. As of August 2024, there will be 85 Ramsar conventional Sites have been designated. In this, the Chilkka Lake in Orissa and Keoladeo National Park in Rajasthan were the first in India.

Total Ramsar Convention Sites In India 2024 (Updated)
Often there is a question like How many Ramsar Convention Sites in India?
At present, the total Ramsar Sites in India 2024 is 80 covering an area of 1,332,200 hectares. This is the highest in the South Asia. On World Wetlands Day 2024, Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change and Labour and Employment increased the tally of Ramsar sites (Wetlands of International Importance) in India to 80 from the existing 75 by designating 5 more wetlands as Ramsar sites. Ramsar Sites are the world's largest network of protected areas. At present, there are over 2,400 Ramsar Sites in the world with 172 Convention Contracting Parties. This covers more than 2. 5 million square kilometres.
The world's first Ramsar Site was the Cobourg Peninsula in Australia, designated in 1974. The largest sites are Rio Negro in Brazil, Ngiri-Tumba-Maindombe in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Queen Maud Gulf in Canada.
