List of Union Territories and Capitals
At present, India has a total of 8 Union Territories. In August 2019, the former state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into two separate Union Territories—Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh—after the abrogation of Article 370. Additionally, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu were merged into a single Union Territory in January 2020 to streamline administration. Due to this reorganisation and merger, the total number of Union Territories was reduced to eight. The Table Below is the updated list of Union Territories of India along with their respective capitals, as applicable in 2025.

Father Of Revolutions In India
Recent Changes in States and Capitals
The capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been renamed from Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram. This 2024 update aims to honour the islands' role in India's independence movement and move away from colonial-era naming.
Andhra Pradesh has officially reaffirmed Amaravati as its sole capital following the 2024 elections. This ends years of uncertainty regarding the "three-capital" model, with development now fully focused on building the city as the state's permanent administrative hub.
While Jammu and Kashmir remains a Union Territory as of late 2025, it held its first assembly elections in a decade in late 2024. Omar Abdullah was sworn in as the Chief Minister, though the territory continues to operate as a UT with seasonal capitals in Srinagar and Jammu until statehood is restored.
India maintains a total of 28 states and 8 Union Territories. Notable administrative trends include the use of dual capitals for seasonal efficiency, such as Bhararisen (Gairsain) as the summer capital and Dehradun as the winter capital in Uttarakhand, and Leh and Kargil serving as headquarters for Ladakh.
Why States and Capitals Are Important for Exams
States and capitals are a vital part of the General Knowledge and Static Awareness sections in exams such as UPSC, SSC, and Banking. These questions are direct and easy to score, providing a quick way to boost your marks without the need for complex problem-solving.
Understanding these administrative centres also makes it easier to follow Current Affairs. News about government policies or regional developments often refers to the capital city; knowing them helps you immediately connect the news to the correct state, making your study sessions more efficient.
Additionally, this knowledge is essential for Geography and Map-based questions. Capitals serve as mental landmarks that help you visualise India’s political boundaries and regional diversity. Being familiar with these locations is a key requirement for any candidate looking to prove their general awareness during interviews.
