International Development Week 2024: International Development Week is celebrated every year in the first full week of February. The aim of International Development Week (IDW) is to draw attention to international development and shine a spotlight on the important contributions that Canadians are making through partnerships around the world.  IDW features hundreds of activities across the country and abroad and celebrates Canadian contributions to eradicating poverty and building a more peaceful, inclusive , and prosperous world.  A unique Canadian tradition since 1991, IDW is held annually during the first full week of February. This year #IDW2024 will take place from February 4 to 10. International Development Week 2024 aims to inform, inspire, and involve Canadians in Canada’s international development efforts. The unifying theme of the previous year was Go for the Goals, which represents a call to action for Canadians to support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The UN’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a 15-year global framework for action centered on an ambitious set of 17 SDGs, which envision a secure world, free of poverty and hunger, with full and productive employment, access to quality education, and universal health coverage; they also envision a world in which gender equality has been achieved, women and girls are empowered and environmental degradation has ended. The 2030 Agenda is universal, meaning that developing and developed countries alike will implement the agenda. Furthermore, the agenda includes the overarching principle of ensuring that no one is left behind in the achievement of the SDGs. Canada embraces the universality of the 2030 Agenda and is committed to supporting the implementation of the SDGs in Canada and internationally. Working with its partners, Canada is striving to end poverty and inequality, build more prosperous and peaceful societies, and protect the planet.

International Development Week: History

International Development Week is a national event promoted by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). The Agency is concentrating more and more of its bilateral (country to country) aid in a group of 20 countries of focus. International Development Week was initiated in 1990 by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). CIDA was established in 1968 to administer the bulk of Canada's official development assistance (ODA) program. CIDA works in concert with its development partners, fragile states and countries in crisis, countries of focus, and the Canadian population and institutions. IDW explored several dimensions of development with participation from high commissions and consulates, non-government organizations, York research centers, colleges, Faculties, and student groups. The first event of IDW was held in 1998.
