The holiday commemorates the establishment of the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC). The aim of the SAHRC is to promote respect for human rights, promote the protection, development, and attainment of human rights, and monitor and assess the observance of human rights in South Africa. In recognition of the events on this day, the United Nations has declared that March 21st each year is 'The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Proclaiming the Day in 1966, the General Assembly called on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
This year’s commemoration of Human Rights Month coincides with the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution. Human rights are the rights that people simply have and are not granted by any state. These rights are inherent to all irrespective of any of the above statuses. Human rights range from right to life, right to food, right to education, right to health, etc. Human Rights Day reinforces our commitment to the Bill of Rights as enshrined in our Constitution and these rights include:
