Qualifications of Chief Ministers of India
For the qualifications of all the chief ministers of Indian states, kindly see the section below.

They must be a citizen of India.

They must be above the age of 25 years.

They must be a member of the State Legislative Assembly (MLA). In case the person is not an MLA at the time of their appointment as Chief Minister of a State, they must become an MLA by contesting an election in their respective constituency within six months of appointment.

How is a Chief Minister Appointed?
In India, the Chief Minister is appointed by the Governor, the CM leads the Council of Ministers, oversees state administration, and implements policies. Key responsibilities include heading the state government, coordinating ministerial work, and advising the Governor.
Terms of an Indian Chief Minister
The normal term of a Chief Minister in India is five years, which is linked to the term of the State Legislative Assembly. However, the term can change if the CM resigns, loses majority support, or if the government is dissolved earlier. In situations of constitutional breakdown, President’s Rule may be imposed, ending the CM’s tenure before completing the full term.

Who is the first Chief Minister of India?
A chief minister leads a state government's council of ministers and may be supported by a deputy chief minister. They typically select the State Chief Secretary and assign departments to Cabinet Ministers and Ministers of State. On 26 January 1950, Govind Ballabh Pant, Premier of United Provinces, became the first Chief Minister of the newly renamed Uttar Pradesh.
