The Yorkshire Ridings Society held the first Yorkshire Day celebration on August 1, 1975. It wasn't a recognised occasion, though, until the Yorkshire authorities decided to have a "Official Yorkshire Day Civic Celebration" in York in 1985. Every year since then, a different town or city has served as the host location. The date honours both the Battle of Minden and the anniversary of William Wilberforce, a former Yorkshire MP, who led the charge for the emancipation of slaves in the British Empire in 1834.
