The new JE (Telecom) and Scientific Assistant (IMD) posts have their own technical syllabus covering subjects such as Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer Science and Physics. Because Scientific Assistant accepts B.Sc. (Physics) graduates, many science students are now asking whether a B.Sc. student can apply for SSC JE. Check the official notification for the detailed syllabus of these new streams.
SSC JE Exam Pattern 2026
Study the SSC JE syllabus and exam pattern together, because the marks and question distribution decide how you should split your preparation time. Both papers are objective-type computer-based tests. Paper 1 is a qualifying screening test, while Paper 2 is fully technical and decides the final merit.
SSC JE Paper 1 Exam Pattern
Paper 1 tests General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness and General Engineering. The engineering section has the most questions, so technical preparation matters even at this stage. Paper 1 is qualifying, so you must score the minimum qualifying marks to be shortlisted for Paper 2.

How to Prepare for SSC JE Syllabus 2026?
A good SSC JE preparation strategy balances technical subjects with Reasoning and General Awareness. The technical syllabus is large, so do not try to finish everything at once. A subject-wise plan, regular numerical practice and repeated revision make it manageable.
- Understand the Complete Syllabus: Download the SSC JE syllabus and sort topics into strong, moderate and weak areas. This tells you where to spend more time.
- Give Priority to Technical Subjects: General Engineering is half of Paper 1, and Paper 2, which decides your rank, is completely technical. Build strong concepts in your discipline.
- Do Not Ignore Paper 1 Sections: Paper 1 is qualifying, but you still need to clear it. Practise Reasoning and General Awareness regularly so they don't hold you back.
- Practise Numerical Questions: Don't limit yourself to theory. Solve numericals regularly from subjects such as Strength of Materials, Soil Mechanics, Electrical Circuits, Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics.
- Use Previous Year Questions: Solve SSC JE previous year questions after finishing each topic. They show how concepts are tested and which areas need more work.
- Take Regular Mock Tests: Once a good part of the syllabus is done, attempt full-length mocks under timed conditions. Review wrong answers and revise the topics where you keep losing marks.
The effort is worth it: Junior Engineer posts are placed in Pay Level 6 of the 7th CPC. Read about the SSC JE salary 2026 to know the in-hand pay and allowances.
Best Books for SSC JE Preparation
Pick books that explain concepts clearly and give enough practice. Avoid collecting too many books for the same subject. Choose one reliable book per subject and add previous year papers, practice questions and mock tests.
