The minimum educational qualification for SSC exams starts at Class 10 (Matriculation). Each SSC exam is pitched at one of four levels, and you can apply only for exams at or below your level of education.

The qualification must be from a recognised board or university, and in most exams you must hold it on or before the cut-off date given in the notification.

What Does “Details of Qualifying Educational Qualification” Mean in SSC?

When you fill an SSC application form, a section asks for "Details of Qualifying Educational Qualification". It means the details of the qualification that makes you eligible for that exam, not every course you have studied. For CGL, it is your graduation; for CHSL, your Class 12; for MTS or GD, your Class 10; and for JE, your engineering degree or diploma.

The form usually asks for these details:

Enter the details exactly as they appear on your marksheet or certificate. If you hold a higher qualification, you can mention it where the form asks for "highest qualification", but the qualifying qualification is the one linked to the exam's eligibility.

What Is SSC in Educational Qualification?

In many application forms outside SSC exams, "SSC" in the education section means Secondary School Certificate, which is the Class 10 board exam (also called Matriculation or High School). It is different from the Staff Selection Commission. In SSC exam forms, SSC stands for Staff Selection Commission, and the Class 10 qualification is called Matriculation.

SSC Exam Eligibility Criteria: Age Limit, Nationality and Qualification

SSC exam eligibility has three parts. You must meet all three for the post you apply for.

Some posts add other conditions, such as physical standards (GD, CPO, some CGL inspector posts), skill tests (Stenographer, DEST in CGL and CHSL) or work experience (some JE posts).

SSC Age Limit and Age Relaxation by Category

The SSC exam age limit is counted on the crucial date given in each notification (usually 1 January or 1 August of the exam year). This table gives the usual age limits by exam.

Reserved categories get extra years on top of the upper age limit. These relaxations apply across SSC exams.

For example, the CHSL upper age limit of 27 years becomes 30 for OBC and 32 for SC/ST candidates. The exact relaxations, certificates needed and the crucial date are given in each notification.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria and Age Limit

The SSC CGL needs a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university, but some posts have extra conditions and the age limit differs by post.

SSC CGL Age Relaxation for SC and OBC Candidates

With relaxation, an SC/ST candidate can apply up to 32 years for a post with an upper limit of 27, and up to 35 years for a post with a limit of 30. OBC candidates get 3 years, so the limits become 30 and 33 years.

SSC CHSL Age Limit and Educational Qualification

The SSC CHSL 2026 needs Class 12 from a recognised board, and the age limit is 18–27 years for all posts (LDC/JSA and DEO). For DEO Grade A in the office of the C&AG, the Class 12 pass must be in Science with Mathematics. There are no physical standards for CHSL posts.

SSC JE Eligibility Criteria and Educational Qualification

The  SSC JE needs a degree or diploma in Civil, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, depending on the post and department. The exact requirement varies by organisation.

SSC Stenographer Eligibility Criteria

The SSC Stenographer Grade C and D need Class 12 from a recognised board. Candidates must also pass a stenography skill test at the speed given in the notification. The age limit is 18–30 years for Grade C and 18–27 years for Grade D.

SSC Selection Post Eligibility Criteria

Selection Post is different from other SSC exams because each post has its own essential qualification and age limit, set by the department that requested it. The posts are grouped into three levels.
