The SSC CGL Syllabus 2026 covers four subjects in Tier 1 (Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude and English) and a wider, post-wise set of papers in Tier 2. The 2026 notification has also changed how the exam is taken: both tiers now have sectional timing, so each subject has its own time limit and you cannot go back to a section once its time is over.
Tier 1 is a qualifying exam of 100 questions in 60 minutes. Tier 2 Paper 1 is compulsory for all posts, while Paper 2 (Statistics) and Paper 3 (Finance and Economics) are only for specific posts. SSC CGL Exam Pattern 2026
SSC CGL 2026 is held in two computer-based tiers. Tier 1 screens candidates for Tier 2, and the final merit list is made from Tier 2 marks only.

What Is New in the SSC CGL 2026 Exam Pattern
- Sectional timing in Tier 1: each subject now has a fixed 15 minutes. Earlier, the 60 minutes could be used across all four subjects.
- Sectional timing in Tier 2 Paper 1: each module has its own time limit, as shown in the Tier 2 table below.
- No going back: once a section's time ends or you submit it, you cannot return to it.
- Paper 2 applicability: Statistics is required for both Junior Statistical Officer and Statistical Investigator Grade-II.
The number of questions, marks and negative marking are unchanged from 2025.

- Each question carries 2 marks, and 0.50 marks are deducted for every wrong answer.
- The total exam time is 60 minutes, split into four fixed 15-minute sections. Unused time in one section does not carry over to the next.
- Candidates eligible for a scribe get 20 minutes per section (80 minutes in total).
- Tier 1 is qualifying. Its marks are used only to shortlist candidates for Tier 2, not for the final merit list.

- Each question in Sections I, II and Module I of Section III carries 3 marks, with 1 mark deducted for each wrong answer.
- Sections I and II (390 marks) count towards the final merit. The Computer Knowledge Test is qualifying for all candidates.
- The DEST is qualifying and is held in a separate session. It requires a data entry speed of 8,000 key depressions per hour on a computer.

For Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer, the final merit is based on Sections I and II of Paper 1 plus Paper 3. For JSO and Statistical Investigator Grade-II, it is Sections I and II of Paper 1 plus Paper 2.

How to Use the SSC CGL Syllabus 2026 PDF
- Print it or keep it on your phone and use it as a checklist. Tick each topic once you have studied and practised it.
- Mark topics in three colours: strong, average and weak. Spend most of your revision time on the weak ones.
- Match each topic with past questions. After finishing a topic, solve its questions from previous year papers to see how SSC asks it.
- Revisit the PDF every two weeks to check that no topic has been left out, especially the low-weight ones in reasoning and GA.
How to Prepare Using the SSC CGL Syllabus 2026
The complete syllabus is large, so turn it into a weekly plan:
- Split it by subject and tier. Tier 1 topics come first, since you must clear Tier 1 to reach Tier 2. Add the Tier 2 depth (algebra, geometry, trigonometry, longer English passages and computer knowledge) once the basics are done.
- Set weekly goals. Pick 4–5 topics a week across subjects, for example two maths topics, two reasoning topics and one English topic, plus daily current affairs.
- Track what you finish. Tick off topics in the PDF as you complete them, and mark weak ones for revision.
- Practise with the timer. Sectional timing means speed in each 15-minute section matters. Take sectional tests and full mocks under the 2026 timing.
- Use previous year papers. Past papers show which topics come up most often and how difficult the questions are.

SSC CGL Preparation Tips 2026
- Practise under sectional timing. With 15 minutes per Tier 1 subject, aim to attempt 20–22 questions accurately in each section rather than spending too long on a few hard ones.
- Start with Tier 1, plan for Tier 2. The four subjects overlap, so a strong Tier 1 base also covers most of Tier 2 Paper 1. Add Computer Knowledge and typing practice for DEST early.
- Give English extra time. English carries 135 of the 390 merit marks in Paper 1, the highest of any module. Read an editorial daily and revise vocabulary.
- Make short notes for maths formulas in algebra, geometry, trigonometry and mensuration, and revise them every week.
- Read current affairs daily and revise monthly compilations, since GA questions often cover the last 6–8 months.
- Watch negative marking. Tier 2 deducts 1 mark per wrong answer (a third of the 3 marks for a correct one), so avoid blind guessing.
- Analyse every mock test. Note which topics cost you marks and time, and revise them before the next mock.

Q5. What is the difference between the SSC CGL Tier 1 and Tier 2 syllabus?
Tier 1 tests four core subjects at a basic level and is only qualifying. Tier 2 tests the same subjects in more depth with 3 marks per question, adds Computer Knowledge and DEST, and has extra papers for JSO and AAO posts. Tier 2 marks decide the final merit.
Q6. Is there any change in the SSC CGL exam pattern 2026?
Yes. The 2026 notification introduced sectional timing: 15 minutes per subject in Tier 1 and fixed times for each module in Tier 2 Paper 1. You cannot return to a section once its time ends. The number of questions, marks and negative marking are unchanged.
