SSC CGL Salary 2026, Check 5 Years, 10 Years & In-Hand Salary Structure

The SSC CGL salary depends on the post you get. SSC CGL fills Group B and Group C posts across Pay Levels 4 to 8 of the 7th Pay Commission, so a starting basic pay can be anywhere from ₹25,500 to ₹47,600 a month. Add Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance, and the monthly in-hand salary for a fresher ranges from about ₹42,000 to ₹88,000, depending on the post and the city of posting.

The pay does not stay there. Every employee gets a 3% annual increment, DA is revised twice a year, and promotions or MACP upgrades move you to a higher pay level. This is why the SSC CGL salary after 5 years and after 10 years is much higher than the starting figure.

SSC CGL Salary Per Month and In-Hand Salary 2026

Your SSC CGL salary per month is built in four steps:

• Basic pay: fixed by your pay level (₹25,500 to ₹47,600 at the start).
• Allowances: DA at 60% of basic pay, HRA at 30%, 20% or 10% of basic pay for X, Y and Z cities, and Transport Allowance of ₹3,600 (big cities) or ₹1,800 (other places), plus DA on it.
• Gross salary: basic pay plus all allowances.
• In-hand salary: gross salary minus deductions such as NPS (10% of basic pay + DA), CGHS and CGEGIS. Income tax (TDS) and professional tax, where applicable, are deducted on top of this.

Figures are approximate and calculated with DA at 60%. In-hand amounts are before income tax; most freshers pay little or no tax under the new tax regime. Deductions can differ slightly by department, so your actual SSC CGL in-hand salary per month may vary by a few hundred rupees.

SSC CGL Salary After 5 Years

SSC CGL salary after 5 years grows mainly through five annual increments of 3% each, given every 1 July (or 1 January, depending on your joining date). On the 7th CPC pay matrix, this moves you from the first cell of your pay level to the sixth cell. DA revisions add to this every six months.

These figures keep DA at today's 60%. In practice DA rises roughly 3–4% every six months, so the actual salary after 5 years will be higher. Some departments, such as CBI and NIA, also allow promotion to Inspector after about 5 years of service.

The lower figure is for a Z city and the higher figure for an X city.

SSC CGL Highest Salary After 5 Years

The highest SSC CGL salary after 5 years goes to Assistant Audit Officer and Assistant Accounts Officer (Level 8, Group B gazetted). Their basic pay reaches about ₹55,200, and the in-hand salary in an X city crosses ₹1 lakh a month. Among Level 7 posts, Income Tax, Excise and GST Inspectors and ASOs earn about ₹95,500 in-hand in an X city after 5 years.

SSC CGL Salary After 10 Years

After 10 years, three things decide your salary: ten annual increments, the DA rate at that time, and whether you have been promoted. If you are not promoted within 10 years, the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme moves you to the next pay level after 10 years of service, so your pay still goes up.

The table keeps DA at 60% and ignores the 8th Pay Commission, so real salaries after 10 years will be higher. At these levels income tax also starts to apply, which reduces take-home pay.

Income Tax Inspector Salary After 10 Years

An Income Tax Inspector joins at Level 7 with ₹44,900 basic pay. The next post is Income Tax Officer (ITO), a Group B gazetted post at Level 8; how soon it comes depends on vacancies in your regional cadre, often between 6 and 10 years.

• Not yet promoted: basic pay of about ₹60,400 and in-hand salary of about ₹95,000 to ₹1.10 lakh, plus the MACP upgrade at 10 years.
• Promoted to ITO: basic pay in Level 8 and in-hand salary of about ₹95,000 to ₹1.17 lakh a month, depending on the city and how long after promotion.

Excise Inspector Salary After 10 Years

An Excise Inspector (Inspector, Central Excise/CGST under CBIC) also starts at Level 7. After 10 years without promotion, the basic pay is about ₹60,400, giving an in-hand salary of roughly ₹95,000 (Z city) to ₹1.10 lakh (X city). The next post is Superintendent (Level 8). Promotion speed varies widely between CBIC zones, so many Excise Inspectors get the MACP upgrade before their first promotion.

SSC CGL Pay Scale and Salary Structure 2026

The SSC CGL pay scale follows the 7th Pay Commission pay matrix. Each pay level has a starting basic pay and a maximum that you reach through yearly increments.

The starting salary in SSC CGL is therefore ₹25,500 basic pay at the lowest level and ₹47,600 at the highest. The exact posts on offer change every year with the notification.

SSC CGL Income Tax Inspector Salary

The Income Tax Inspector works under the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and is a Level 7 post.

The work involves assessment, survey and search duties, and promotion to ITO makes the post Group B gazetted.

SSC CGL Excise Inspector Salary

The Excise Inspector, officially Inspector (Central Excise) under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), is one of the most popular SSC CGL posts. It is a Level 7 post with the same pay as the Income Tax Inspector.

Excise Inspectors posted in field formations may also get extra allowances, such as for night duty or certain remote postings, which can raise the in-hand salary further.

SSC CGL GST Inspector Salary

There is no separate "GST Inspector" post in the SSC CGL notification. After GST came in, the Central Excise wing of CBIC took over CGST work, so the post listed as Inspector (Central Excise) is the one commonly called GST Inspector. The pay is the same as for the Excise Inspector.

GST Inspector Salary After 5 Years

After five increments, the basic pay of a GST Inspector reaches about ₹52,000. With DA, HRA and TA, the in-hand salary is about ₹82,000 in a Z city and about ₹95,500 in an X city.

GST Inspector Salary After 10 Years

After 10 years the basic pay is about ₹60,400 if there is no promotion, for an in-hand salary of about ₹95,000 to ₹1.10 lakh. A GST Inspector who has not been promoted to Superintendent by then gets the first MACP upgrade to Level 8.

SSC CGL Salary Slip: Basic Pay, Allowances and Deductions

The SSC CGL salary slip shows how the monthly in-hand salary is worked out. Here is a sample for a newly joined Level 7 officer (for example an Income Tax or Excise Inspector) posted in an X city.

Income tax is deducted as TDS based on your yearly income and the tax regime you choose. The government also adds its own contribution of 14% of basic pay + DA to your NPS account; this is not part of the in-hand salary.

SSC CGL Salary After 8th Pay Commission

The 8th Pay Commission was constituted, with its Terms of Reference notified, on 3 November 2025 under Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. It has 18 months to submit its report, so a revised pay matrix is expected only after the report is accepted, likely in 2027. No fitment factor or new pay matrix has been announced yet.

The table below only illustrates how starting basic pay would change if a fitment factor of 1.92, a figure widely discussed in the media, were applied. It is a projection, not an official figure.

When a new pay matrix comes in, DA is usually merged into basic pay and restarts from zero, so the gross salary will not rise by the full fitment factor. Treat these numbers as estimates until the government notifies the 8th Pay Commission pay matrix.
