SSC JE Salary 2026 is one of the main reasons engineering diploma and degree holders prepare for the SSC JE 2026 exam. Junior Engineers are placed in Pay Level 6 of the 7th Pay Commission with a starting basic pay of ₹35,400. With Dearness Allowance at 60% from 1 January 2026, along with HRA and Transport Allowance, a newly joined JE takes home roughly ₹56,900 to ₹66,800 per month, depending on the city of posting.

The basic pay is the same everywhere, but the gross and in-hand salary change with the X, Y or Z classification of the posting city. This article covers the SSC JE salary structure, in-hand salary, allowances, deductions, salary after 5 and 10 years, the 8th Pay Commission and promotions.

SSC JE Salary Slip

The SSC JE salary slip is a monthly statement of an employee's earnings and deductions. It shows basic pay, DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, NPS contribution, CGEGIS, CGHS, income tax (if any) and the net salary credited. Employees can download it from their department's payroll or HRMS portal and use it to verify payments and as official proof of income.

SSC JE Allowances and Benefits

Along with basic pay, Junior Engineers receive several allowances and government benefits. The exact amounts depend on Central Government rules and the place of posting.

Dearness Allowance (DA)

Dearness Allowance offsets the impact of inflation and is revised by the Central Government twice a year, in January and July. It is currently 60% of basic pay (from 1 January 2026), which comes to ₹21,240 for a newly joined JE.

House Rent Allowance (HRA)

HRA depends on the classification of the city of posting: 30% of basic pay in X cities, 20% in Y cities and 10% in Z cities. For a JE, this works out to ₹10,620, ₹7,080 and ₹3,540 respectively. Employees given government accommodation do not receive HRA.

Transport Allowance (TA)

Transport Allowance covers commuting costs. For Pay Level 6, it is ₹3,600 per month in the higher TPTA cities and ₹1,800 elsewhere, plus DA on that amount. At 60% DA, this comes to ₹5,760 and ₹2,880 respectively.

Other Allowances and Benefits

Depending on the department and nature of duties, SSC JEs may also get medical facilities under CGHS, Leave Travel Concession, children education allowance, leave benefits and retirement benefits under NPS (with the option of the Unified Pension Scheme). Some posts, such as those in BRO or remote areas, carry special allowances for difficult locations.

SSC JE Salary After Deductions

The salary credited to an SSC JE is lower than the gross salary because a few deductions are made every month. The NPS contribution is the largest, while CGEGIS, CGHS and income tax may also apply.

NPS/UPS Contribution

10% of Basic Pay + DA towards pension

CGEGIS

Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme contribution

CGHS

Income Tax

SSC JE Salary During Probation

SSC JEs usually serve a probation period of two years. During probation, they receive the full Level 6 salary with all admissible allowances, so there is no cut in pay. This is also when the employee learns departmental procedures, technical responsibilities and workplace requirements before confirmation.

SSC JE Salary After 5 Years

After five years, SSC JE salary grows through annual increments and DA revisions. Without promotion, the basic pay moves up the Level 6 pay matrix as shown below. For a year-by-year breakdown, read our article on SSC JE salary after 5 years.

JEs who are not promoted within 10 years become eligible for upgradation to Pay Level 7 under the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme, which raises pay further. Many JEs are promoted to Assistant Engineer within this period.
