All Souls Day History

The Catholic Church says that believers' deeds on earth can aid in the purification of the souls in purgatory on the eve of All Souls Day. Other monasteries gradually adopted the new time and practice, and eventually the Western Church as a whole. It is an optional ceremony known as "The Commemoration of the Faithful Departed" in the Church of England. In light of the theological beliefs in the resurrection of the body and the Communion of Saints, Anglicans see All Souls' Day as a continuation of the celebration of All Saints' Day that serves as a memorial to those who have passed away.
