Delhi Police Driver Road Signs and Traffic Signals
Road signs and signals are the single biggest topic group in Part D, typically 10 to 15 questions. Indian road signs fall into three types, recognised by shape and colour.
|
Sign type |
Shape and colour |
Purpose |
Examples |
|
Mandatory (regulatory) |
Circle, mostly with red border; Stop is an octagon; Give Way is an inverted triangle |
Must be obeyed; breaking them is an offence |
Stop, Give Way, No Entry, No U-turn, Speed Limit, No Horn, No Parking, One Way |
|
Cautionary (warning) |
Triangle with red border, point upward |
Warn of a hazard ahead |
Sharp curve, School ahead, Pedestrian crossing, Narrow bridge, Slippery road, Speed breaker |
|
Informatory |
Rectangle, usually blue or green |
Give information |
Hospital, Petrol pump, Parking, First aid post, Eating place, Toilet |
Traffic light signals:
- Red: stop behind the stop line.
- Amber (yellow): stop if it is safe; do not speed up to cross.
- Green: go if the road is clear.
- Flashing amber: slow down and proceed with caution.
- Flashing red: stop completely, then proceed when safe.
Road markings: a single broken white line allows lane changing and overtaking when safe. A continuous line or double yellow line means no overtaking or crossing. Zebra crossings give pedestrians the right of way.
Delhi Police Driver Driving Test and Trade Test
The trade test carries 150 marks and is qualifying only. You must score at least half in each of its four parts. Falling short in any one part eliminates you, even if your total is high.

Because each part has its own pass mark, regular practice on a heavy vehicle, especially reversing and parking, is the best preparation.
Delhi Police Driver Physical Endurance and Measurement Test
PE&MT is qualifying and conducted by Delhi Police. The endurance test (race, long jump, high jump) comes first. Only those who pass it go on to the measurement test. For the 2025 cycle, PE&MT began on 25 July 2026.

SSC normalises scores across shifts when the CBT runs over more than one day, so the final merit uses normalised marks. With four wrong answers costing one full mark, guess only when you can rule out at least two options.
Delhi Police Driver Minimum Qualifying Marks
You must reach the minimum qualifying marks in the CBT to be considered at all. Being shortlisted for PE&MT also needs you to clear the category cut-off, which is much higher.

Preparation Tips for Delhi Police Driver Examination
The winning strategy is to master Part D for 40+ marks, then add steady marks from Reasoning and Maths.
- Start with Part D. Learn every road sign by shape and colour, traffic signals, lane and overtaking rules, and Motor Vehicles Act penalties.
- Learn vehicle maintenance practically. Open a vehicle's bonnet and identify the engine oil dipstick, coolant tank, battery and belts. It helps in both the CBT and the trade test.
- Cover CNG and pollution. CNG safety, PUC, BS norms and noise limits come up regularly.
- Practise Reasoning daily. 20 to 30 questions a day on series, coding-decoding, analogies and figures.
- Revise basic Maths. The 10 Maths questions are simple; aim for 8 or more correct.
- Read current affairs daily and revise static GK, with a focus on Delhi.
- Take full mock tests of 100 questions in 90 minutes, and solve previous year papers.
- Prepare for physical tests early. Practise the 1,600 m run, long jump and high jump alongside your studies.
- Practise driving an HMV regularly, especially reversing and parking, before the trade test.
