World Elephant Day 2026: World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12, Conceived in 2011 by Canadian filmmakers Patrica Sims and Michael Clark of Canazwest Pictures and Sivaporn Dardarananda, Secretary General of Elephant Reintroduction Foundation in Thailand. It was officially launched on August 12, 2012. World Elephant Day 2026 is celebrated in order to preserve and protect elephants. The goal was to work towards better protection of elephants, conserve their habitats, and reintroduce captive elephants into the wild through sanctuaries. World Elephant Day 2026 asks you to experience the elephants in non-exploitative and sustainable environments where elephants can thrive under care and protection.

• The first World Elephant Day was held on 12 August 2012. The film “RETURN TO THE FOREST” narrated by William Shatner was released on the inaugural of world elephant day.

• World Elephant Day is an international organisation founded by Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and World Elephant Society that helps to spread awareness to protect and preserve elephants.

• The World Elephant Day website was designed and maintained by Canazwest Pictures. World Elephant Day was founded in November 2015 to support elephant conservation worldwide.

• This day is marked to raise awareness to ban the illegal hunting and poaching of the wild beasts. World Elephant Day is dedicated to elephant lives and protection.

World Elephant Day 2026 Theme

Over the last decade, the number of elephants has significantly dropped by 62%, and this could be extinct by the end of the next decade. Over 100 elephants were killed by the poachers. • The demand for ivory makes the poachers kill more elephants. One of the world’s largest elephants, SATAO was killed recently for its iconic tusk. Another Kenyan giant elephant, MOUNTAIN BULL, was also killed for its ivory

•  For meat, leather, and tusks, the elephants were poached. Poachers were trained for this due to the number of tools needed to be transported and because of the large size of these animals.

• The escalation of poaching, habitat loss, human-elephant conflicts, and mistreatment in captivity are some of the threats to elephants. Deforestation was also a cause of the decreasing population of elephants.

• World Elephant Day is a day where organisations and individuals can rally together to give a voice to the issues threatening elephants.
