Example 1: If A can complete the work in 10 days and B can complete the same work in 12 days when they work together, what is the time taken to complete the whole work?
Solution:
A completes the entire work in 10 days, so A,s one day of work is = 1 / 10.
B completes the entire work in 12 days, so B’s one day work is = 1 / 12
By working simultaneously, they will do 1/10 + 1/12 = 11/60 of the work in 1 day.
Thus total days taken by both working simultaneously = 60/11 days.
Example 2: Surya can do a piece of work in 5 days and Arun can do it in 6 days. How long will they take if they work together?
Solution:
Surya takes 5 days therefore x = 5 days
Arun takes 6 days therefore y = 6 days
If they work together, the time required to complete the work is
Surya + Arun = 1/x + 1/y = xy/(x+y)
= (5 × 6)/( 5+6) = 30/11= 2.73 days
Example 3: If 5 men can make 10 pens in 6 days working 6 hours a day. Then how many days can 12 men make 16 pens working 8 hours per day?
Solution:
We know that the formula, M1D1H1 / W1 = M1D2H2 / W2
In the given question, M1= 5 men, D1= 6 days, H1= 6 hours/day, W1= 10 pens.
M2= 12 men, H2= 8 hours/day ,W2= 16 pens
We have to find D2 =?
Hence, M1D1H1 / W1 = M1D2H2 / W2
= 5 x 6 x 6 / 10 = 12 x D2 x 8 / 16
Or, D2 = M1D1H1W2/ M1H2W1
D2 = ( 5× 6× 6× 10)/ (12× 8× 10)
D2 = 3 days.
Therefore, 12 men can prepare 16 pens if they work 8 hours per day in 3 days.
