Important Problems on Trains Formula For Bank Exams

Problems on Trains are similar to the time distance speed topic. The important Problems on Trains formulas PDF are provided here. Candidates shall exploit these Problems on Trains formulas PDF to maximize their marks in the quantitative aptitude section of the bank exams and other competitive exams. If you memorize the important Problems on Trains formulas PDF,  it will become easy to solve the train problems in the future.

  • Speed of the Train = Total distance covered by the train / Time taken

  • Time taken by a train x meters long to pass a signal post or a pole or a standing man is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x meters.

  • Time taken by a train x meters long to pass a stationary object of length y meters is equal to the time taken by the train to cover x+y meters.

  • Suppose two trains are moving in the same direction at u  kmph and v kmph such that u>v, then their relative speed = u-v kmph.

  • If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in the same direction at u kmph and v kmph, where u>v, then the time is taken by the faster train to cross the slower train = (x+y)/(u-v) hours.

  • Suppose two trains move in opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph. Then, their relative speed = (u+v) kmph.

  • If two trains of length x km and y km are moving in opposite directions at u kmph and v kmph, then the time taken by the trains to cross each other = (x+y)/(u+v) hours.

  • If two trains start at the same time from two points A and B towards each other and after crossing they take a and b hours to reach B and A respectively, then A's speed: B's speed = (√b : √a)

Example 1: The length of the bridge, which is a train 130 meters long and traveling at 45 km/hr. Find the length of the bridge a train can cross in 30 seconds?:

Solution: Speed = (45 * 5/18) m/sec = (25/2) m/sec. Time = 30 sec.

Let the length of the bridge be x meters.

Then, (130 + X)/30 = 25/2

=> 2(130 + X) = 750

=> X = 245 m

Example 2: A train 300 m long is running at a speed of 54 km/hr. At what time will it pass a bridge 150 m long?

Solution: Speed = {54 × (5/18)} m/sec = 15 m/sec

Total distance which needs to be covered = (300+150)m = 450m

Time = Distance/Speed

Required Time = 450 / 15 = 30 seconds
