  • If the present age of a person is X, then

Age after n years = X + n

Age n years ago = X – n

n times the present age = nX

If ages in the numerical are mentioned in the ratio A: B, then A: B will be AX and BX

  • If the sum of ages is X and Y and the ratio of their ages is p:q respectively, then you can determine the age of Y by using the formula shown below:

Age of Y = Ratio of Y/ Sum of ratios x sum of ages

Age of Y = q/ (p+q) x A

  • After reading the problems on ages, assume the unknown age to be some variable, let's say ‘X’
  • Convert the statements in the question into mathematical equations.
  • If the information in the question comprises ages at different points in time, assume the present age as ‘x’
  • If the information in the question comprises ages of different people, assume the age of the youngest person as ‘x’
  • Read the question very carefully. The phrase ‘n time more than’ needs to be understood correctly.
  • Calculate the variable by solving the equations and the obtained value must satisfy the conditions given in the problem.

Problems on Ages Examples

Example 1:

1) Question: The present ages of the mother and son are 28 and 7 years respectively. If the ratio of their ages will be 11: 4 after x years, then find the value of x.

A.5
B.4
C.6
D.8

Answer:  A

Solution:

(28 + x) / (7 + x) = 11 / 4
112 + 4x = 77 + 11x
35 = 7x
x = 5

Example 2:

2) Question: The age of Mathi is 120% of the age of Sunil and the ratio of the age of Sunil to Bala is 5:8. If the age of Mathi 5 years hence is equal to the age of Bala 5 years ago, then find the age of Sunil?

A.25 years
B.50 years
C.20 years
D.30 years

Answer: A

Solution:

The ratio of the age of Mathi, Sunil, and Bala =
(5 * 120/100):5:8 = 6:5:8
6x + 5 = 8x – 5
2x = 10
x = 5
The age of Sunil = 5 * 5 = 25 years

Example 3:

3) Question: The ratio of the age of A 5 years ago to the age of B 4 years hence is 2:5 and the ratio of the present age of B to A is 12:7. Find the sum of the present age of A and B together.

A.39 years
B.65 years
C.57 years
D.45 years

Answer: C

Solution:

(2x + 5)/(5x – 4) = 7/12
24x + 60 = 35x – 28
11x = 88
x = 8
The present age of A = 2 * 8 + 5 = 16 + 5 = 21 years
The present age of B = 5 * 8 – 4 = 40 – 4 = 36 years
The sum of the present age of A and B together = 21 + 36 = 57 years

Example 4:

4) Question: Average age of A, B, and C is 30 years. The sum of the present ages of B and C is 85 years. The difference between the present age of A and C is 50 years. Find the average age of B and C together.

A.40.5 years
B.41.5 years
C.42.5 years
D.43.5 years

Answer:

Solution:

C Average age of A, B, and C = 30
A+B+C= 90
Sum of the present age of B and C = 85
Difference between the present age of A and C = 50
The sum of the present age of A and B = 35
A+B+C - A+B= 90- 35 = 55
The present age of C= 55
The present age of B= 85-55= 30
Average age of B and C = (55 + 30)/2= 85/2 = 42.5 years

Example 5:

5) Question: The present ages of three colleagues are in proportion 3 : 5: 7. Four years ago, the sum of their ages was 48. find their present ages (in years)?

A. 12, 20, and 28 years

B. 14, 24, and 28 years

C. 14, 28, and 30 years

D. 14, 26, and 28 years

Answer: A

Solution:

Let the present age of three colleagues are:   3x, 5x and 7x

(3x – 4) + (5x – 4) + (7x – 4) = 48.

15x – 12 = 48 ⇒ 15x = 60 ⇒ x = 4.

Their present ages are 12 years, 20 years, and 28 years respectively.

Hence, option A is correct.

Example 6:

6) Question: Abhi’s age after six years will be three-seventh of his father’s age. Ten years ago, the ratio of their ages was 1: 5. What is Abhi’s father’s age at present?

A. 50 years

B. 40 years

C. 35 years

D. 30 years

Answer: A

Solution:

Let the ages of Abhi and his father 10 years ago be x and 5x years respectively. Then, Abhi’s age after 6 years = (x + 10) + 6 = (x + 16) years.

Father’s age after 6 years = (5x + 10) + 6 = (5x + 16) years.

Therefore, (x+16) = 3/7(5x+16)

7 (x + 16) = 3 (5x + 16) ⇒ 7x + 112 = 15x + 48

8x =64, x = 8.

Hence, Abhi’s father’s present age = (5x + 10) = 50 years.

Example 7:

7) Question: One year ago, the ratio of Gaurvi and Sachin’s ages was 6: 7, respectively. Four years hence, the ratio would be 7: 8. How old is Sachin?

A. 35 years

B. 36 years

C. 32 years

D. 28 years

Answer: B

Solution:

Let Gaurvi and Sachin’s ages are 6x and 7x years, respectively. Then, Gaurvi’s age is 4 years hence = (6x + 1) + 4 = (6x + 5) years.

Sachin’s age is 4 years hence = (7x + 1) + 4 = (7x + 5) years.

6x + 5/ 7x+5= 7 /8

8 (6x + 5) = 7 (7x + 5) ⇒ 48x + 40 = 49x +35 x = 5,

Hence, Sachin’s present age = (7x + 1) = 36 years.

Example 8:

8) Question: Sanat is 20 years old while Sumit is 25 years old. After how many years the ratio of their age will be 7:8?

A. 15 years
B. 10 years
C. 20 years
D. 25 years

Answer: A

Solution:
Let the years be x.
According to the given condition,
(Sanat + x) / (Sumit + x) = 7 / 8 ………..(1)
On solving we get,
x = 15 years

Example 9:

9) Question: 2 years ago the ratio of ages A, B, and C was 2: 3: 4 and the sum of their present age was 60 then find the present age of B.
a) 18 years
b) 20 years
c) 21 years
d) 24 years

Answer: B
Solution:
A-2: B-2:C-2 = 2 : 3 : 4 …………..(1)
A + B + C = 60……………..(2)
Sum before 2 years = 54 years…….(3)
9 units = 54 years
1 unit = 6 years
The present age of B = 20 years

Example 10:

10) Question: The sum of the ages of three persons A, B and C is 60 years. A is 5 years older than B who is 6 years younger than C. Find the present age of B.
a) 49/3 years
b) 48 years
c) 14 years
d) None of these

Answer: A

Solution:

A = B + 5 ………..(1)
B = C - 6 ………..(2)
A + B + C = 60 years………(3)
Solving the above equations,
B = 49/3 years
