History Of The Nobel Prize 

The Nobel Prize is named after Alfred Nobel, who was a well-known chemist, engineer, and inventor born in Stockholm, Sweden.

• According to the Alfred Nobel Will 1895, Nobel prizes are conferred in five separate areas: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, Literature, and Peace, to those who have best served humankind during the preceding years.

• In his will, he bequeathed all of his "remaining realizable assets" to be used to establish five prizes, which became known as "Nobel Prizes".

• Nobel Prizes were first awarded in 1901.

• In 1968, the central bank of Sweden, that is, Sveriges Riksbank, funded the establishment of the Nobel Prize for Economic Sciences.

• From then onwards, Nobel Prizes were awarded in six different fields.

• A prize may not be shared among more than three individuals, although the Nobel Peace Prize can be awarded to organizations of more than three people.

• The Nobel Prize, beginning in 1901, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, beginning in 1969, have been awarded 609 times to 975 people and 25 organizations.

• Five individuals and two organizations have received more than one Nobel Prize.

The selection of Nobel prize laureates will be done by prize-awarding institutions which invite more than 6,000 individuals to propose, or nominate, candidates for the prizes.

• Some 1,000 people submit nominations for each prize, and the number of nominees usually ranges from 100 to about 250.

• Among those nominating are Nobel laureates, members of the prize-awarding institutions themselves; scholars active in the fields of physics, chemistry, economics, and physiology or medicine; and officials and members of diverse universities and learned academies.

• The respondents must supply a written proposal that details their candidates' worthiness.

• Self-nomination automatically disqualifies the nominee. Prize proposals must be submitted to the Nobel Committees on or before January 31 of the award year.
