Nelson Mandela International Day 2024: July 18 History, theme, Significance, and Quotes

Nelson Mandela International Day 2024: On July 18th of this current year, Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 is celebrated and observed worldwide as an honoring event. Nelson Mandela International Day (also known as Mandela Day) is a yearly international celebration honoring Mandela that is observed on his birthday, July 18th. The request Nelson Mandela made in 2009 to honor him through serving communities rather than by celebrating his birthday still serves as the foundation of the Nelson Mandela International Day initiative. While 18 July continues to be the campaign's main focus, we implore campaign supporters to participate in long-term, sustainable initiatives.

List of Important Days in July 2024

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, a South African anti-apartheid activist who presided over South Africa from 1994 to 1999, lived from 18 July 1918 to 5 December 2013. He was the first completely representative democratic election to elect a black head of state in the history of the nation. His administration concentrated on promoting racial harmony in order to erase the effects of apartheid. He presided over the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997 and was an ideological socialist and African nationalist. Nelson Mandela has received various honors. He is a legendary figure who overcame the apartheid system in South Africa. He was an advocate for human rights, a political prisoner of conscience, and a broker of world peace. Additionally, he was South Africa's first president to be chosen democratically (no biggie). The concept that each person has the potential to change the world and have an effect is honored on Nelson Mandela International Day. Therefore, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the U.N. propose that you volunteer for 67 minutes in commemoration of his 67 years of public service.

Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 Theme

The global theme for Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 is “It is still in our hands to combat Poverty and Inequality.” It goes without saying that the background is a world where inequality is on the rise and where the Covid-19 pandemic's damaging effects have highlighted preexisting inequalities and negatively impacted vulnerable populations in a variety of ways. Choose people in your community who are in need and doing what you can to help them, is the broadest and most inclusive call to action available. The UN, Red Cross, and South African embassies worldwide will be our main international partners. The food and nutrition program of the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa will serve as the centerpiece of its efforts for Mandela Day.

Nelson Mandela International Day 2024 Significance

The UNGA recognized Mandela's values and his commitment to serving humanity in the Resolution establishing this International Day (A/RES/64/13), which focused on: conflict resolution; racial relations; promoting and protecting human rights; fostering reconciliation; gender equality; the rights of children and other vulnerable groups; combating poverty; and advancing social justice. The resolution also praised his contributions to the global fight for democracy and the advancement of a culture of peace. The Nelson Mandela Foundation will center its efforts for Mandela Day in South Africa around its food and nutrition initiative. While the call to action is the same, we will be concentrating our efforts and messaging on supporting the planting of fruit and indigenous trees, promoting community and backyard gardens, and raising understanding of the connections between food security and climate change.
