Did you know that Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister, served for 17 years, the longest by any PM. Currently, Narendra Modi is the Prime Minister of India, having been in office since 2014. He is the 14th Prime Minister of India who had three consecutive terms in the post. The prime minister is the leader elected by the party with a majority in the lower house of the Indian parliament, the Lok Sabha, which is the main legislative body in the Republic of India. The prime minister and their cabinet are at all times responsible to the Lok Sabha. The prime minister can be a member of the Lok Sabha or of the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of the parliament. The prime minister is appointed by the president of India; however, the prime minister has to enjoy the confidence of the majority of Lok Sabha members, who are directly elected every five years, unless the prime minister resigns. The prime minister is the presiding member of the Council of Ministers of the Union government. The prime minister unilaterally controls the selection and dismissal of members of the council and the allocation of posts to members within the government.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and a key figure in India’s freedom struggle, served as the first Prime Minister of independent India. He was the Member of Parliament from Phulpur and was appointed Prime Minister on 15 August 1947 by Lord Mountbatten. Nehru formed the First Nehru Ministry with a council of fifteen ministers and played a crucial role in laying the foundation of modern India.
