Project Elephant is one of the important wildlife conservation movements which are initiated in India to protect the endangered Indian Elephant. Project Elephant is a government-sponsored initiative by the Government of India, initiated in 1992, aimed at the conservation of Wild Asian elephants, their habitats, and migration routes.
India has 33 elephant reserves at present, with an area of 80777 sq km across 14 states. Elephant reserves in India are important areas established to conserve elephants. These reserves serve as essential management units that protect their natural habitats and help to resolve conflicts between humans and wildlife.
This initiative was organized by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in collaboration with the State Forest Departments. The elephant reserves often coincide with tiger reserves, wildlife sanctuaries, and designated forest areas. These protected zones are governed by the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972, the Indian Forest Act of 1927, and other pertinent local laws. The inaugural reserve, the Singhbhum Elephant Reserve, was created in 2001 in Jharkhand.
