The candidates can go through this boats and streams formula for bank exams article to know more about the boats and streams concepts.
- Stream – The moving water in a river is known as a stream.
- Upstream – When the boat is flowing in the opposite direction to the stream, it is called upstream. In this upstream case, the net speed of the boat is called the upstream speed
- Downstream – When the boat is flowing along the direction of the stream, it is called downstream. In this downstream case, the net speed of the boat is called downstream speed
- Still Water – If the speed of the water is zero, i.e. water is stationary, then it is called still water.
These are some basic concepts which the aspirant should know in the upstream and downstream formula and boats and streams formula for bank exams. Upstream and Downstream Formula
The upstream and downstream formula is provided in this boats and stream formula post. In boats and streams formula it is important to know that the upstream and downstream formula. Here we have added the upstream and downstream formula. Candidates who want to score more marks in the aptitude section they can exploit this upstream and downstream formula. You can learn how to solve boats and streams questions by using the upstream and downstream formula in this boats and streams formula article.
- Upstream formula: (u−v) km/hr, where “u” is the speed of the boat in still water and “v” is the speed of the stream
- Downstream formula = (u+v)Km/hr, where “u” is the speed of the boat in still water and “v” is the speed of the stream.
- Speed of Boat in Still Water = ½ (Downstream Speed + Upstream Speed)
Ie., Speed of Boat in Still Water =1/2 (Ds + Us)
- Speed of Stream = ½ (Downstream Speed – Upstream Speed)
Ie., Speed of Stream = 1/2 (Ds - Us)
- Average Speed of Boat = {(Upstream Speed × Downstream Speed) / Boat’s Speed in Still Water}
- If it takes “t” hours for a boat to reach a point in still water and comes back to the same point then, the distance between the two points can be found by,
Distance = {(u2-v2) × t} / 2u,
where “u” is the speed of the boat in still water and “v” is the speed of the stream
- If it takes “t” hours more to go to a point upstream than downstream for the same distance, the formula for distance will be:
Distance = {(u2-v2) × t} / 2v,
where “u” is the speed of the boat in still water and “v” is the speed of the stream
- If a boat travels a distance downstream in “t1” hours and returns the same distance upstream in “t2” hours, then the speed of the man in still water will be:
Speed of Man in Still Water = [v × {(t2+t1) / (t2-t1)}] km/hr,
where“v” is the speed of the stream

Boats and Streams Formula With Example
In this boats and streams formula for bank exams article, we have provided some boats and streams formula with examples by using the boats and streams formula for bank exams. Candidates can solve these boats and streams formula with examples which is given here and try to solve the various questions related to these examples of boats and streams. The aspirants are asked to download the boats and streams formula pdf for bank exams to be proficient with upstream and downstream formula and all the boats and streams formula for bank exams.
Example 1: A man can row upstream at 15 km/hr and downstream at 25 km/hr. What is the speed of the stream?
Solution:
According to the formula,
Speed of the stream = ½ (Downstream Speed – Upstream Speed)
Speed of the stream = ½ (25-15) = ½ × 10 = 5 km/hr
Example 2: A woman can swim in water with a speed of 15 km/hr in still water. If the speed of the stream is 4 km/hr, what will be the time taken by the person to go 76 km downstream?
Solution:
Downstream Speed = (15+4) km/hr = 19 km/hr
To travel 76 km downstream.
Time taken = 76/19 = 4 hours
Example 3:- A man swims downstream 28 km in 4 hrs and upstream 12 km in 3 hrs. Find his speed in still water and also the speed of the current.
Solution:
Downstream Speed (u) = 28/4 = 7 km/hr
Upstream Speed (v) = 12/3 = 4 km/hr
Speed of the boat or swimmer in still water = 1/2*(Downstream Speed + Upstream Speed)
= 1/2*(7+4)
= 5.5 km/hr
Speed of the current = 1/2*(Downstream Speed - Upstream Speed)
= 1/2*(7-4)
= 1.5 km/hr
Example 4: The speed of a swimmer in still water is 12 km/hr. It takes 6 hrs to swim to a certain distance and return to the starting point. The speed of current is 4km/hr. Find the distance between the two points.
Solution:
Let distance = D
Downstream time = t1; Downstream Speed = 1/2*(12+4) = 8 km/hr
Upstream Time = t2; Upstream Speed = 1/2*(12-4) = 4 km/hr
Total time = t1 + t2
6 = (D/Upstream speed) + (D/Downstream speed)
6 = D/8 + D/4
D = 16 km
