IIT Bombay Develops Bacteria to Absorb Toxic Pollutants in Soil and Generate Beneficial Nutrients
- Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay researchers have identified bacteria that can consume toxic pollutants in the soil and produce helpful nutrients as byproducts.
- The research was published in the journal Environmental Technology and Innovation.
Key Highlights :
- The bacteria are capable of removing organic pollutants from the soil, including aromatic compounds, which are commonly used in pesticides and other industrial products.
- Additional Benefits: These bacteria promote plant growth by:
- Boosting plant growth hormones.
- Inhibiting the growth of harmful fungi.
- Making essential nutrients more available to plants.
- Impact on Agriculture: The bacteria can reduce the reliance on chemicals like insecticides and pesticides, helping to improve soil health and fertility.
- Aromatic Pollutants: The identified pollutants, such as carbaryl, naphthalene, and benzoate, are toxic to plants and can reduce seed germination, plant growth, and yield.
- Toxic Environments: The bacteria were isolated from environments contaminated with pollutants. Species from the Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter genera are particularly effective in breaking down aromatic compounds.
- Traditional Methods vs. Biological Solutions: Traditional methods of soil detoxification, such as chemical treatments, are costly and ineffective in the long term.
- Potential Applications: This research offers a natural alternative to chemical treatments for addressing soil pollution, which could revolutionize environmental and agricultural practices.
