India records cumulative Foreign Direct Investment inflow of $729 billion over the past 25 years
- India has received a cumulative Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflow of $729 billion via direct equity flows since 2000, which rises to $1,072 billion when including reinvested earnings, equity capital, and other capital (up to March 2025).
- The government’s efforts to improve the ease of doing business are expected to boost FDI inflows.
Key Highlights :
- Country-wise FDI shares show that Mauritius, Singapore, the US, the Netherlands, Japan, and the UK together account for over 85% of total FDI flows.
- There has been a shift in hierarchy among countries:
- Singapore’s share increased from 13% (2005) to 24% (2025).
- Mauritius’ share declined from 35.2% to 24.7%.
- Shares of the UK, Japan, Germany, and France decreased.
- Shares of the US, Netherlands, UAE, and Cayman Islands increased.
- Many investments routed via countries like Mauritius and Singapore may not reflect the true origin of investors.
- Sector-wise FDI trends:
- The IT software and hardware sector’s FDI grew from $15 billion (12.7%) in 2015 to $111 billion (15.2%) in 2025.
- Services sector FDI increased from $69 billion (16%) to $110 billion (15.4%).
- The trading sector FDI more than tripled to $30 billion in FY24.
- The telecommunication sector’s share fell from $24 billion (5.6%) to $38 billion (5.2%).
- Construction development FDI decreased from $25 billion (7.3%) to $8 billion (1.1%) due to challenges like land acquisition and slow township development.
- Decline in FDI shares in some sectors is linked to:
- Drugs and pharma: from 5.3% to 3.2%, due to pricing regulations and push for generics.
- Automobile sector: from 3.9% to 2.7%, affected by slower growth and EV policy uncertainties despite India’s car manufacturing status.
- In real estate, FDI tripled from $3.3 billion to $9.6 billion, but its share decreased from 1.2% to 0.9%, indicating slower investment growth despite rising value.
Retail inflation based on CPI falls to 75-month low of 2.82% in May from 3.16% in April, says National Statistics Officedata
- According to the National Statistics Office (NSO) data, retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI) dropped to a 75-month low of 2.82% in May from 3.16% in April.
- The decline in inflation was mainly due to falling prices of food items such as pulses, vegetables, fruits, cereals, sugar, eggs, and household goods, along with a favourable base effect.

- The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of consumer goods and services.
- The main components of the CPI and their respective weights are:
- Food and Beverages: 45.86%
- Housing: 10.07%
- Fuel and Light: 6.84%
- Clothing and Footwear: 6.53%
- Pan, Tobacco, and Intoxicants: 2.38%
- Miscellaneous: 28.32%
- The CPI is currently calculated using 2012 as the base year.
- There are four types of CPI:
- CPI for Industrial Workers (IW)
- CPI for Agricultural Labourers (AL)
- CPI for Rural Labourers (RL)
- CPI (Rural/Urban/Combined)
- The first three types (IW, AL, RL) are compiled by the Labour Bureau under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
- The fourth type, CPI (Rural/Urban/Combined), is compiled by the NSO under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
- Foreign banks from France and the UAE are seeking to establish IFSC Banking Units (IBUs) in GIFT City, Gujarat, boosting India’s International Financial Services Centre (IFSC)
- The International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) has given in-principle approvals to major banks such as Natixis, Credit Agricole (France), and applications are pending for Societe Generale, First Abu Dhabi Bank PJSC, and Mashreq Bank (UAE).
- The total number of IBUs in GIFT City has reached 31 as of June 2025, more than doubling since 2022 (when there were 15 IBUs)
- An IFSC Banking Unit (IBU) functions like an overseas branch of a bank located within GIFT City, providing USD-denominated services such as:Deposits, Term loans, External Commercial Borrowings (ECBs), Trade finance, Interbank placements.
- Qatar National Bank was the first bank from West Asia to set up an IBU in GIFT City last month.
- Domestic banks like Bank of Maharashtra have also applied to set up IBUs.
- Yes Bank was the first bank to establish an IBU in GIFT City in October 2015.
- Other banks like Axis Bank and Standard Chartered have recently expanded their offices within GIFT City.
- As of March 2025, the cumulative assets under IBUs in GIFT City stand at over $88.5 billion.
Reserve Bank of India Permits STRIPS Trading in State Government Bonds to Enhance Market Liquidity
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed a special trading facility called STRIPS for state government securities, expanding the existing framework for central government bonds.
What is STRIPS?
- STRIPS stands for Separate Trading of Registered Interest and Principal of Securities. It allows interest and principal payments of fixed-coupon bonds to be traded separately.
Key Highlights :
Eligible Securities Criteria:
- Must be state government fixed-coupon bonds.
- Must have residual maturity up to 14 years.
- Must have an outstanding amount of at least ₹10 billion (~$116.93 million).
- Must be eligible to meet banks’ Statutory Liquidity Ratio (SLR)
- Purpose:Enables dealers to sell principal and interest components independently, thereby boosting liquidity in the state government securities market.
- Consultation and Feedback:The move was taken after consultations with state governments and market participants.
- Alignment with Central Govt Securities:The guidelines are aligned with those for central government securities where STRIPS trading is already permitted.
- Effective Date:The new rules are in immediate effect from the date of the circular.
Reserve Bank of India Receives ₹63,031 Crore in Bids Against ₹26,000 Crore Target in Second Buyback Auction of Fiscal Year
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received bids worth ₹63,031 crore against the notified amount of ₹26,000 crore at the second buyback auction of the current fiscal year.
- At the auction held recently, the RBI accepted 95% of the notified amount.
Key Highlights :
- In the first buyback auction held last week, the RBI received bids worth ₹27,256 crore and accepted ₹23,856 crore (which was 95% of the notified amount).
- Buybacks are conducted by the government to reduce gross borrowing by paying off debt during the fiscal year.
- Buybacks also help RBI infuse durable liquidity into the banking system.
- In this auction, RBI bought back five government bonds maturing between 2025 and 2029:
- 7.38% 2027 bond
- 7.06% 2028 bond
- 7.26% 2029 bond
- 6.89% 2025 bond
- 6.93% 2026 bond
- Current banking system liquidity is in surplus of ₹2.57 lakh crore according to RBI data.
- The first buyback of FY26 had seen a muted response, but the second auction saw strong demand.
- RBI plans to conduct an auction on Monday to switch government securities worth ₹25,000 crore.
S&P Global Becomes First Foreign Credit Rating Agency to Launch Operations in GIFT City, Gujarat
- S&P Global Ratings Singapore Limited has become the first foreign credit rating agency to establish operations at GIFT City, Gujarat.
- The agency received approval from the International Financial Services Authority (IFSCA), the unified regulator at GIFT City.
- K Rajaram, Chairperson of IFSCA, welcomed the move, encouraging more entries, robust participation, and competition at GIFT City.
- S&P Global is expected to start operations with a workforce of five employees.
- S&P Global follows the footsteps of its Indian counterpart, CareEdge Global IFSC Ltd (subsidiary of CARE Ratings Ltd), which was the first credit rating agency to establish a base at GIFT City in October 2024.
- S&P Global recently released its first Sovereign Ratings of Global Economies, rating 39 countries including India with a BBB+ rating.
- Credit rating agencies provide independent assessments of creditworthiness for sovereigns, corporations, and financial instruments, playing a crucial role in global financial markets.
- In July 2024, SEBI issued a circular empowering credit rating agencies to undertake rating activities under IFSCA
- In GIFT City, credit rating agencies perform critical roles such as:
- Assigning credit ratings for companies seeking to raise capital via debt listings.
- Providing credit ratings for IPOs of Indian companies listed on GIFT IFSC stock exchanges.

- The 95th meeting of the Network Planning Group (NPG), held under the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan, assessed five major infrastructure proposals aimed at enhancing multimodal connectivity and logistics efficiency across the country.
- The reviewed projects include a metro rail extension, two highway projects, and two multi-modal logistics parks, all aligned with the principles of integrated infrastructure planning and last-mile connectivity.

- Ahmedabad Metro Rail Project Phase-2A:
Proposed by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), this project plans a 6.032 km extension from Koteshwar Metro Station to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. It aims to improve urban mobility in Ahmedabad, reduce congestion, and enhance airport access for commuters and staff. - 8-Lane Highway to Vadhavan Port, Maharashtra:
Presented by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), this highway along NH-248S is designed to connect to the upcoming Vadhavan Port, expected to be among the top 10 global container ports. It will handle over 57,000 PCUs/day by 2030 and link to the Delhi–Mumbai Expressway and NH-48, ensuring seamless cargo movement. - 4-Lane Elevated Corridor in Jodhpur, Rajasthan:
Spanning 7.63 km from Mahamandir to AkhaliyaChouraha, this corridor along NH-62 and NH-125 will bypass 28 traffic junctions, reducing peak travel time by 20 minutes. It is designed for future traffic demands and improved urban and regional connectivity. - MMLP Hyderabad, Telangana:
Located in Parkibanda village, Medak district, this 315-acre logistics hub is projected to handle 1.47 MMT of cargo annually by 2028, scaling to nearly 20 MMT by 2070. It offers excellent connectivity to NH-44, Manoharabad Railway Station, and the Regional Ring Road. - MMLP Patna, Bihar:
Proposed at Jaitiya village in Fatuah Taluka, this 106-acre facility is expected to manage 5.43 MMT of cargo annually by 2071. With access to Top Sarthua Railway Station, Patna Airport, and multiple highways, it will serve as a key logistics node in Eastern India, connecting to hubs like Kolkata and Haldia Port.
India’s Social Security Coverage Soars from 19% to 64.3% in 2025
- India has expanded its social protection coverage from 19% in 2015 to 64.3% in 2025, marking a 45 percentage point increase over the past decade, as per ILOSTAT data.
- With over 94 crore people now benefiting from at least one social protection scheme, India ranks second globally in total beneficiaries—a milestone acknowledged by the ILO Director-General, Gilbert F. Houngbo.

Financial Services Institutions Bureau Recommends R Doraiswamy as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) at Life Insurance Corporation of India
- The Financial Services Institutions Bureau (FSIB) has recommended R Doraiswamy for the position of Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Managing Director (MD) at Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).
- R Doraiswamy has been a Managing Director at LIC since September 2023.
- FSIB conducted interviews on June 11, 2025, for the CEO and MD post with four candidates from LIC:R Doraiswamy, Sat Pal Bhanoo, Dinesh Pant, Ratnakar Patnaik
- Based on performance in the interview, overall experience, and existing parameters, FSIB recommended R Doraiswamy for the role.
- The government had recently entrusted Sat Pal Bhanoo with financial and administrative powers and functions of CEO and MD for three months starting June 8, 2025.

Apple Software Pioneer Bill Atkinson Passed Away
- Bill Atkinson, a pioneering software designer, died at the age of 74 at his home in Portola Valley, California, due to pancreatic cancer.
- He was born in Washington and studied computer science and neurobiology at the University of Washington.
- Atkinson was a key figure at Apple Computer, best known for:Programming QuickDraw, a foundational graphics library used in Apple Lisa and Macintosh computers &Being the visionary behind the Macintosh graphical user interface (GUI).
- He is credited with inventing major graphical computing features like:Pull-down menus, The “double-click” gesture
- QuickDraw was initially designed for the Lisa computer (introduced in January 1983) and later became crucial to the Macintosh GUI (launched in January 1984).

- World Blood Donor Day 2025 Theme: This year, 2025, the World Blood Donor Day theme is "Give blood, give hope: together we save lives".
History
- Karl Landsteiner was born on June 14, 1868, and World Blood Donor Day is
commemorated on his birthday. Landsteiner was a scientist, physician, and
immunologist from Austria. In 1930, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his
development of the ABO blood group system, which is the contemporary method of
blood type categorization. This breakthrough allowed doctors to do blood
transfusions without endangering the patient's life. - On April 7, 2000, The theme of World Health Day is 'Safe Blood Starts With Me.'
- In May 2005, World Blood Donor Day is created and implemented at the 58th World Health Assembly.
- On June 11, 2009, The Melbourne Declaration is established, setting up a goal for all countries to obtain all blood supplies from voluntary unpaid donors by 2020.
- On December 6, 2013, The largest blood donation drive is held, in which 61,902 participants donate blood all across India.
