Green Climate Fund Approves $200 Million for Asian Development Bank-Led Programme to Accelerate Clean Energy Investment in India

  • The Green Climate Fund (GCF), the world’s largest climate fund, approved $200 million for a new Asian Development Bank (ADB)-led programme to boost large-scale public and private investment in emerging clean energy sectors in India.
  • Approval took place during GCF’s 42nd Board meeting on July 1, 2025.
  • The funding supports ADB’s India Green Finance Facility (IGFF), a blended finance program aimed at crowd-in investment from India’s development finance institutions (DFIs) and the private sector.
  • This is ADB’s first partnership with GCF in India and aims to catalyse uptake of emerging clean technologies and strengthen the capacity of India’s financial institutions to scale up climate action.
  • IGFF will provide lines of credit to India’s leading DFIs to accelerate funding for technologies like round-the-clock renewable energy, green hydrogen, compressed biogas, electric transport in rural areas, and decentralised renewable energy solutions.

Agri-Fintech Dvara E-Registry Introduces Micro LAP Product Offering Secured Credit to Small Farmers and Agri-Value Chain Participants in India

  • Agri-fintech start-up Dvara E-Registry has launched a Micro Loan Against Property (Micro LAP) product to provide secured, asset-backed credit to small and marginal farmers and other participants in India’s agricultural value chain.
  • The Micro LAP enables farmers to leverage immovable assets to access credit for enterprise growth, diversification, and livelihood stability.
  • This marks a strategic move from short-tenure farm loans to long-term, secured lending, expanding access to formal credit for the underserved rural sector.
  • The launch coincides with Dvara E-Registry crossing ₹150 crore in cumulative disbursements.

Trinidad and Tobago Becomes First Caribbean Nation and 8th Country to Adopt UPI for Indian Travelers via Local Partnership

  • Trinidad and Tobago became the 8th country and the first in the Caribbean to adopt Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for Indian travelers through a local partnership.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the country for integrating the digital payment system via the BHIM app.
  • Modi visited Trinidad and Tobago from July 3–4, 2025, at the invitation of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago.
  • During the visit, both countries expressed interest in expanding cooperation in the digital domain.

Reserve Bank of India Revises Operating Hours for Standing Deposit Facility and Marginal Standing Facility  

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has revised the operating hours for the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) and Marginal Standing Facility (MSF).
  • Effective July 1, 2025, both SDF and MSF will be available from 7:00 PM to 11:59 PM on all days.
  • This revision aligns with the revised call money market timings, which also start at 7:00 PM.
  • Previously, the operational hours for SDF and MSF were from 5:30 PM to 11:59 PM.
  • Standing Deposit Facility (SDF): Offers banks an option to deposit excess funds with the RBI overnight without collateral, at an interest rate of 5.25%.
  • Marginal Standing Facility (MSF): Allows banks to borrow overnight funds from the RBI, by using their SLR securities, at an interest rate of 5.75%.

Reserve Bank of India Sets Premature Redemption Price of ₹9,630 per Unit for Sovereign Gold Bond 2017–18 Series X

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the premature redemption price for Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB) 2017–18 Series X, scheduled for June 4, 2025, fixed at ₹9,630 per unit.
  • The redemption price is based on the simple average of closing gold prices (999 purity) published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA) for the three preceding business days: May 30, June 2, and June 3,
  • The Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme was launched by the Government of India in November 2015, under the Gold Monetization Scheme.
  • The scheme issues bonds in tranches, with terms and conditions notified by RBI in consultation with the Government of India.

  • SGBs are government securities denominated in grams of gold, serving as substitutes for physical gold; investors pay in cash and receive cash redemption on maturity.
  • Bonds can be held by residents of India—individuals, minors (through guardians), joint holders, Trusts, Charitable Institutions, and Universities.
  • Minimum investment is 1 gram of gold, with a maximum subscription limit of 500 grams per person per fiscal year; post-2017, limits increased to 4 kg for individuals/HUF and 20 kg for trusts/entities annually.
  • Bonds bear a fixed interest rate of 2.50% per annum, paid half-yearly, with the last interest paid at maturity.
  • Scheduled Commercial Banks (excluding RRBs), designated Post Offices, SHCIL, NSE, and BSE are authorized to receive applications directly or through agents.
  • Payment modes include cash (up to ₹20,000), demand drafts, cheques, or electronic banking in Indian Rupees.
  • Bonds mature after 8 years; premature redemption is allowed from the 5th year on interest payment dates.
  • Bonds may be used as collateral for loans, with the Loan to Value ratio governed by RBI rules for ordinary gold loans.
  • Interest on bonds is taxable under the Income-tax Act, 1961.
  • Bonds are eligible for trading from dates notified by RBI.

  • The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has launched a new Golden Visa that offers long-term residency without investment in property or
  • This is part of a “nomination-based visa policy”, where applicants can get the visa by paying a one-time fee of AED 100,000 (approx. Rs 23.3 lakh).
  • The original Golden Visa programme was launched in 2019 for investors, entrepreneurs, and highly skilled professionals.
  • In 2022, the UAE reduced the property investment requirement to AED 2 million, making it more accessible.
  • The new visa is open to professionals such as scientists, educators, nurses, digital creators, and maritime experts, who must meet eligibility criteria like 15+ years of experience or accredited recognition.
  • Applicants must pass strict background checks, including anti-money laundering screening and social media evaluations.
  • The application is currently open to Indian and Bangladeshi nationals via VASCO centres.
  • The initiative supports the India-UAE CEPA agreement and highlights the strategic partnership between the two nations.

Indonesia Joins BRICS as Full Member at 17th Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

  • At the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (July 6–7, 2025), leaders welcomed Indonesia as a full member of BRICS.
  • The summit also announced the inclusion of 10 partner countries: Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Cuba, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
  • With these additions, BRICS now includes 20 countries 10 core members and 10 partner nations, representing 56% of the world’s population and contributing 44% of global GDP.
  • The summit adopted key declarations on climate finance, AI governance, and launched a partnership to eliminate socially determined diseases.
  • BRICS was originally formed in 2006 as BRIC and became BRICS with South Africa’s entry in 2010.
  • The summit theme was "Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance," focusing on rebalancing global power structures considered outdated by BRICS.
  • BRICS leaders called for reform of the international system to better reflect 21st-century geopolitical realities.

  • The visit reinforces the strategic partnership between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and JCG in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The week-long port call includes high-level bilateral meetings, joint professional and cultural exchanges, and a sea exercise to improve interoperability.
  • Activities during the visit include courtesy calls, reciprocal ship visits, joint training sessions, yoga, and sports events.
  • The engagement will conclude with a joint sea exercise named ‘Jaa Mata’

  • Tata Power-DDL, in collaboration with Japan-based Nissin Electric Co Ltd, has commissioned India’s first micro substation with Power Voltage Transformer (PVT) to provide low-cost and reliable power supply.
  • The micro substation with PVT can convert high-voltage power directly from transmission lines to low-voltage power suitable for residential consumers.
  • Tata Power-DDL is a leading power utility serving around 9 million consumers in North Delhi.
  • The project is part of the International Demonstration Project on Japan’s Energy Efficiency Technologies, initiated by New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO).
  • Tata Power-DDL and Nissin Electric signed the project agreement on August 21, 2024, to commence this initiative.
  • The technology is especially useful in urban areas where network extension is challenging due to growing power demands.

Suriname Becomes First Amazon Region Nation Certified Malaria-Free by World Health Organisation

  • Suriname became the first country in the Amazon region to receive malaria-free certification from the World Health Organisation (WHO) on June 30, 2025.
  • This achievement follows nearly 70 years of sustained efforts by the Surinamese government and people to eliminate malaria across its rainforests and diverse communities.
  • With Suriname’s inclusion, 46 countries and 1 territory have been certified as malaria-free by WHO, including 12 countries in the Region of the Americas.
  • WHO grants malaria elimination certification when a country demonstrates, beyond reasonable doubt, that indigenous transmission has been interrupted nationwide for at least the past 3 consecutive years.
