Indian Students Win the Earth Prize 2026 for Developing ‘Plas-Stick’ to Remove Microplastics from Water
- Indian teenagers Vivaan Chhawchharia, Ariana Agarwal, and Avyana Mehta won The Earth Prize 2026, becoming the first team from India to secure the global award.
- The students developed Plas-Stick, a biodegradable material made from tamarind seed powder that can effectively remove microplastics from contaminated water.
- The Earth Prize is an international competition that recognises innovative environmental solutions developed by young people.
- The global winners were selected through public voting, with nearly 23,000 votes cast worldwide among seven regional finalists.
- Plas-Stick is produced from tamarind seed powder, an agricultural by-product that is widely available in India.
- The innovation works by attracting and binding microplastic particles in water, causing them to form larger clumps that can be easily separated.
- The solution provides a low-cost, biodegradable, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional water filtration methods.
- Unlike many traditional filtration systems, Plas-Stick does not require expensive infrastructure or harmful chemical additives.
- The project aims to provide an affordable water purification solution, particularly for rural and underserved communities with limited access to advanced filtration technologies.
- The use of discarded tamarind seeds promotes resource efficiency while addressing the growing challenge of water pollution.
Tamil Nadu Farmer Valluvan Recognised as United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization Soil Farmer Hero
- Valluvan, a 58-year-old farmer from Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, has been recognised as a United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Soil Farmer Hero for adopting sustainable agricultural practices.
- He transformed a loss-making coconut farm into a profitable multi-crop agroforestry enterprise, improving both income and soil health.
- Before 2009, Valluvan spent around ₹500 per coconut tree annually but earned only about ₹300, resulting in continuous losses.
- Inspired by the Cauvery Calling Initiative, he adopted tree-based agriculture and agroforestry practices as a sustainable farming model.
- Earlier cultivating only three crop varieties, he now grows more than 14 crops, including coconut, nutmeg, pepper, turmeric, elephant yam, curry leaves, and seven varieties of banana.
- Crop diversification created multiple income streams, reducing dependence on a single crop and improving resilience against market and climate-related risks.
- His annual income increased significantly from around ₹30,000 per acre to between ₹2.5 lakh and ₹3 lakh per acre.
- The diversified farming model provides financial stability, as income from different crops helps offset losses from any single crop.
- Soil health improved substantially, with soil organic carbon content increasing from 0.5% to 1.56% over seven years.
- Improved soil organic carbon enhances soil fertility, nutrient retention, water conservation, and crop productivity, while also contributing to climate change mitigation.
- Valluvan's success is closely associated with the Cauvery Calling Initiative, which promotes tree-based agriculture in the Cauvery River Basin.
- Since 2019, the initiative has facilitated the planting of approximately 13.4 crore trees on private farmlands across Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.
- The long-term goal of the initiative is to plant 242 crore trees to support river rejuvenation, ecological restoration, and sustainable agriculture.

4,000-Year Climate Reconstruction of World’s Largest Inhabited River Island Offers Climate Adaptation Insights
- A new scientific study has reconstructed nearly 4,000 years of climate and vegetation history of Majuli Island, the world’s largest inhabited river island, located in Assam.
Key Highlights :
- Majuli Island is culturally significant as a centre of Neo-Vaishnavite culture (a reformist Vaishnavism movement) and is also a key tribal settlement region.
- The study provides a long-term reconstruction of climate variability, vegetation change, and flood dynamics, offering insights for climate adaptation and disaster planning in flood-prone regions.
- Majuli is situated between the Brahmaputra River (south and east), Subansiri River (west), and a northern branch of the Brahmaputra, and is highly vulnerable to flooding and riverbank erosion.
- The region previously lacked a comprehensive palaeoecological reconstruction, which was addressed using pollen (palynological) and sediment-based analysis.
- The research was conducted by the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) under the Department of Science and Technology (DST).
- Scientists collected a 150 cm deep sediment core from Sakali Wetland, Majuli Island, to analyse fossil pollen and grain-size data.
- The study used a multi-proxy approach (pollen + grain-size analysis) to reconstruct vegetation history and river dynamics for the first time in the region.
- Pollen analysis helped reconstruct past vegetation and climate conditions, while grain-size analysis revealed river energy, sediment transport, and flood intensity changes.
- The study reconstructs Mid–Late Holocene environmental changes, covering the period from around 4040 to 500 cal. yrs BP.
- Results show an early warm and humid phase (4040–2260 cal yrs BP) with dense forest cover, indicating resilience during the 4.2 ka climate event.
- This was followed by fluctuating monsoon intensity and flood regimes, including a moist phase during 1100–500 cal yrs BP, corresponding to the Medieval Climatic Anomaly.
- The last 500 years show declining temperature and rainfall, consistent with the Little Ice Age, along with increased human influence and vegetation change.
- Grain-size data indicates a shift from low-energy to high-energy fluvial conditions, reflecting increasing river instability and erosion.
- The study highlights strong links between climate variability, vegetation shifts, and Brahmaputra river dynamics.
- The findings help improve understanding of flood intensity, sediment transport, and erosion processes, crucial for river basin management and disaster mitigation.
- The research identifies phases of ecological resilience and vulnerability, supporting biodiversity conservation and wetland restoration strategies.
- The study was published in Review of Palaeobotany and Palynology (Elsevier).
- It provides the first integrated multi-proxy reconstruction of Majuli’s long-term environmental history, supporting climate adaptation and policy planning for flood-affected communities.
