Securities and Exchange Board of India Approves Zerodha for Category-I Merchant Banking Operations

• Zerodha Corporate Advisors, a subsidiary of Zerodha, received a Category-I Merchant Banking Licence from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) on 1 September 2026.
• The licence marks Zerodha’s entry into the investment banking sector, expanding its business beyond its core stockbroking operations.
• Zerodha Corporate Advisors had applied for the merchant banking licence on 27 April 2026 and became the 249th registered merchant banker in India upon receiving the approval.
• The company is expected to commence its investment banking operations within a few months and will provide services across India.
• Initially, Zerodha’s investment banking arm will focus on Equity Capital Markets (ECM), including Initial Public Offerings (IPOs), Follow-on Public Offers (FPOs) and related advisory services.
• The company also plans to provide corporate finance, issue-related services and participate in other capital-market transactions.
• Zerodha aims to extend its low-cost, transparent and client-centric brokerage philosophy to investment banking, with an emphasis on efficiency and avoiding aggressive selling practices.
• Category-I Merchant Bankers are full-service intermediaries that can act as lead managers and underwriters for IPOs and can also provide services related to mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring and business valuation.
• A Category-I merchant banker can manage main-board public issues and undertake underwriting activities.
• The minimum net worth requirement for Category-I merchant bankers is ₹50 crore, increased from the earlier ₹5 crore, with a cap of 20 times the liquid net worth.

Reserve Bank of India Data Shows People Above 40 Hold 76% of Individual Bank Deposits

• According to Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data, individuals above 40 years of age held more than three-fourths of individual bank deposits as of June 2026.
• Individuals in the 25–40 years age group accounted for slightly less than 20% of individual bank deposits as of June 2026.
• The lower share of deposits among younger individuals is linked to their increasing preference for market-linked investment instruments, particularly equities and mutual funds.
• Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) recorded overall deposit growth of 11.6% year-on-year (YoY) in June 2026.
• Private Sector Banks recorded faster deposit growth of 13.8% YoY in June 2026, compared with 10.3% growth recorded by Public Sector Banks (PSBs).
• The Household Sector remained the largest contributor to bank deposits, accounting for 58.8% of total deposits at the end of June 2026.

National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development and India Meteorological Department Partner to Strengthen Climate-Resilient Agriculture and Rural Finance through Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture

• National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to integrate agro-meteorological data into the Data in Climate Resilient Agriculture (DiCRA)
• The initiative aims to improve access to weather intelligence for farmers and agricultural stakeholders, supporting better climate-resilient farming decisions.
• The MoU was signed by Sanjeev D. Rohilla (NABARD) and Bikram Singh (IMD) in the presence of NABARD Chairman Shaji Krishnan V. and IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.
• Under the MoU, IMD will provide weather forecasts, agro-meteorological advisories, in-situ observations, and weather alerts for integration into a dedicated Weather Portal within DiCRA.
• The DiCRA Weather Portal will provide open and user-friendly access to climate information through web portals, mobile interfaces, and Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
• The initiative will support last-mile delivery of actionable weather information, particularly benefiting farmers and rural stakeholders.
• The integration of weather intelligence will help improve climate risk assessment, crop-related decision-making, and agricultural planning.
• The initiative is also expected to strengthen rural financing by converting weather and climate data into timely, location-specific insights.

WhatsApp Launches Bill Payments Service in India for Household and Utility Bills

• WhatsApp launched its Bill Payments service in India on 3 September 2026, enabling users to find, manage and pay household and utility bills directly through the WhatsApp app.
• The service is powered by Bharat Connect, the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) network, allowing users to access 22,722 billers across 30 categories.
• The service supports payments for electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments, along with other household and utility payments.
• Users can access the Bill Payments feature through the rupee (₹) icon on the WhatsApp home screen.
• Through the feature, users can view bills, check past payments, track upcoming bills and manage multiple accounts with the same biller.
• Users can manage multiple bill accounts for places such as their home, office or family members from a single location within WhatsApp.
• The service will be rolled out in stages and made available to Android and iOS users across India.
• The integration with Bharat Connect (BBPS) enables WhatsApp users to make recurring and utility payments without leaving the messaging app.

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India Allows Insurers to Invest in New Development Bank’s Maharajah INR Bonds

• The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has permitted insurance companies to invest in Maharajah INR Bonds (Onshore Rupee Bonds) issued by the New Development Bank (NDB).
• The approval provides Indian insurers with an additional investment avenue through rupee-denominated bonds issued by the multilateral development bank.
• The New Development Bank (NDB) plans to raise ₹25,000 crore over five years through Maharajah INR Bonds.
• The funds raised through the bonds will be used for general corporate purposes, including financing and onward lending for sustainable development and infrastructure projects in India.
• The bond proceeds will also support green and social projects, aligning the programme with sustainable and environmentally responsible development.
• IRDAI has prescribed separate category codes for investments in NDB bonds, with EORB for onshore rupee bonds issued by NDB and IORB for infrastructure-approved NDB bonds.
• Life insurance companies are required to invest at least 50% of their funds in government securities, state government securities or other approved securities.
• Life insurers are also required to invest at least 15% of their funds in infrastructure and social sectors, while investments outside approved categories remain subject to IRDAI’s prudential limits.
• The Maharajah INR Bonds must comply with applicable Government of India norms, and any public issue of the bonds will require approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
• IRDAI’s approval follows a representation from the New Development Bank seeking permission for its Maharajah INR Bond programme to raise ₹25,000 crore over five years.
• While investing in these bonds, insurers must comply with Section 27E of the Insurance Act, 1938, which prohibits insurers from investing policyholders’ funds directly or indirectly outside India.
• The New Development Bank (NDB) was established by the BRICS countries — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — to mobilise resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries.

• The Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA) under the Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the theme for Adoption Awareness 2026.
• Theme: “Legal Adoption. Safe Childhood. Secure Future. Say No to Illegal Adoption!”
• The theme was launched by Bhavna Saxena, Chief Executive Officer of the Central Adoption Resource Authority, during a live morning programme on Doordarshan National.

Key Highlights

• The campaign aims to promote legal, safe, transparent and child-centric adoption and prevent illegal adoption practices across India.
• CARA is strengthening coordination with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the Ministry of Home Affairs to address illegal adoption practices.
• Stakeholders involved include Women and Child Development Departments, Child Welfare Committees, District Child Protection Units, Specialised Adoption Agencies, Child Care Institutions, Police, Health Departments, Judiciary, Legal Services Authorities, hospitals and nursing homes, among others.
• Adoption Awareness Workshop in Delhi: 10 September 2026 at Delhi Secretariat, New Delhi, in collaboration with the Department of Women and Child Development, Government of Delhi.

National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Odisha Receives In-Principal Approval for ₹24,700 Crore Shipbuilding Cluster in Kendrapara

• National Shipbuilding and Heavy Industries Park Odisha Limited (NSHIPOL) received in-principal approval under the Shipbuilding Development Scheme (SbDS) of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
• The proposed project, valued at ₹24,700 crore, will be established along the northern bank of the Mahanadi River in Kendrapara, Odisha, opposite the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) plant near Paradip.
• The cluster will create an integrated ecosystem covering shipbuilding, ship repair and associated heavy industries.

Key Highlights

• The project will be developed through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) involving the Odisha Maritime Board (OMB) and Paradip Port Authority (PPA).
• The proposed shipyards are expected to have a combined annual shipbuilding capacity of around 2 million gross tonnes.
• The original plan envisages a dedicated waterfront of around 2–2.5 km and an area of approximately 2,000–2,500 acres.
• The strategic location near Paradip Port and Odisha’s mineral and industrial hinterland will provide access to steel, coal, raw materials and maritime logistics infrastructure.
• The proposed ecosystem may include ancillary industries such as engine manufacturing, steel fabrication and marine equipment manufacturing, along with training centres and research and development infrastructure.
• NSHIPOL will now prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) covering infrastructure requirements, vessel specifications, capital expenditure, dredging, breakwater requirements and the financial model.
• The project will require statutory approvals, including environmental clearance and Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) permission, before receiving final approval under the scheme.
• Paradip Port Authority Chairperson P. L. Haranadh stated that the project could strengthen Odisha’s shipbuilding capabilities, attract investment, generate employment and promote ancillary industries.
• The Shipbuilding Development Scheme aims to establish state-level shipbuilding clusters with shared infrastructure to improve competitiveness, attract private investment and generate employment.
• NITI Aayog has proposed developing the Mahanadi riverine location into a major shipbuilding and ship-repair hub for large and short-sea vessels.
• The proposed hub could also support a green-vessel design and innovation centre, skill-development academy and green shipbuilding practices.
• The project is expected to help Odisha diversify from a bulk cargo and mineral-export economy centred around Paradip towards ship construction, ship repair, marine engineering and ancillary manufacturing.

• Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan attended the Fisheries Outreach Programme at Agatti, Lakshadweep, and released “Mission Rangeen Machhli 2031”, the Strategic Action Plan for Ornamental Fisheries Development.
• He also distributed various government benefits and assistance to beneficiaries from the fisheries sector.
• The Vice President described the event as a historic milestone for Lakshadweep and a new milestone in India’s Blue Revolution.

• Fisheries development projects worth over ₹62 crore have been approved for Lakshadweep under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY).
• Lakshadweep has an estimated fisheries potential of over 1 lakh tonnes, including around 94,000 tonnes of tuna and tuna-like species.
• India’s seafood exports crossed ₹73,000 crore in the last financial year and reached more than 120 countries.

• He urged youth to consider fisheries as a modern, technology-driven profession offering opportunities in science, innovation and global markets.

Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Names Lahore as Tourism and Cultural Capital for 2026–27

• Lahore, Pakistan’s cultural hub, has been named the Tourism and Cultural Capital of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) for 2026–27.
• The announcement was made at the 26th meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, which was attended by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
• The Tourism and Cultural Capital title has been rotated annually among SCO member states since 2022 to promote tourism, cultural exchange and people-to-people contacts.
• The title also aims to highlight the cultural heritage and tourism potential of the country holding the organisation’s rotating presidency.
• The decision to designate Lahore was taken in April 2026, when the heads of tourism administrations of SCO member states met in Bishkek.
• Pakistan currently holds the SCO presidency, and its chairmanship theme is “Turning Vision into Action: Connectivity, Innovation and Shared Prosperity.”
• The previous cities to receive the SCO Tourism and Cultural Capital title were Varanasi, India (2022–23), Almaty, Kazakhstan (2023–24), Qingdao, China (2024–25) and Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan (2025–26).
• The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) is headquartered in Beijing, China, and was established in 2001 as a regional organisation.

United Nations Environment Programme Warns Global Warming May Cross 1.5°C Threshold by End of This Decade

• The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has warned that global warming is likely to cross the 5°C threshold by the end of this decade, posing a major setback to the temperature goal of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
• UNEP’s report titled “Limiting Overshoot” states that human-caused warming is already approaching 4°C above pre-industrial levels.
• Global warming is currently increasing at around 25°C per decade, making a near-term breach of the 1.5°C limit increasingly likely.
• The report emphasises that crossing 5°C should not be considered a permanent point of no return, and countries should instead work to minimise the magnitude and duration of the temperature overshoot.
• UNEP recommends eventually bringing global temperatures back below 5°C through sustained climate action and reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions.
• The best remaining pathway is described as “overshoot, peak and decline”, under which rapid greenhouse-gas reductions could limit warming to a peak of around 8°C.
• After reaching the peak, temperatures could decline through sustained net-negative emissions and carbon dioxide removal (CDR).
• Under current policies, global warming could reach around 6°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100.
• The projected warming range under current policies is estimated at 9°C to 3.6°C by 2100, highlighting the uncertainty and risks associated with insufficient climate action.
• UNEP warned that every five-year delay in emissions reductions could add at least 1°C to peak warming, underlining the importance of immediate climate action.

India and Germany Sign Joint Declaration of Intent on Wetland Conservation and Wise Use

• India and Germany signed a Joint Declaration of Intent (JDI) on the Conservation and Wise Use of Wetlands of International Importance during the 4th Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF).
• The 4th IGEF was held in New Delhi, Delhi, under the theme “Together for More Resilience”, with the aim of strengthening bilateral cooperation on environmental protection and climate resilience.
• The JDI was signed by Union Minister Bhupender Yadav, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), and Carsten Schneider, Germany’s Minister of Environment, Climate Protection, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Energy (BMUKN).
• The 4th Indo-German Environment Forum was co-organised by MoEFCC (India) and BMUKN (Germany), in association with the Asia-Pacific Committee of German Business (APA) and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
• The bilateral engagement focuses on low-carbon industries, biodiversity in wetlands, mountains and forests, resource efficiency and circular economy, sustainable finance, green skills, and investment mobilisation.
• The cooperation on wetlands of international importance aims to strengthen efforts for wetland conservation, sustainable management and climate resilience.
• The Indo-German Environment Forum (IGEF) was established in 2008 and serves as the highest-level bilateral forum on environmental policy between India and Germany.

Türkiye Joins Artemis Accords as 71st Country for Space Exploration

• Türkiye officially became the 71st country to join the United States-led Artemis Accords, which promote safe, peaceful, transparent and sustainable exploration of the Moon, Mars and beyond.
• Mehmet Fatih Kacır, Türkiye’s Minister of Industry and Technology, signed the Artemis Accords during a ceremony at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., USA.
• Türkiye became the 7th West Asian country to join the Artemis Accords, after the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan and Israel.
• The Artemis Accords were jointly launched by NASA and the US Department of State in 2020 to promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation in space exploration.
• The Accords provide a non-binding set of principles for peaceful, safe, responsible and sustainable civil space exploration.
• The framework is based on and supports the implementation of key obligations under the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.
• Countries signing the Accords commit to sharing scientific data, providing emergency assistance to astronauts, and promoting interoperability of space systems where possible.
• The Artemis Accords also promote the preservation of historically significant sites and objects on the Moon and other celestial bodies.
• Türkiye’s accession strengthens its growing national space programme and expands international support for common principles governing future space exploration.

Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Facilitates Export of 18 MT NPOP-Certified Ethnic Rice from Tripura to Austria and the Netherlands

• An 18-metric-tonne consignment of four varieties of NPOP-certified ethnic rice from Tripura was flagged off on 2 September 2026 for export to Austria and the Netherlands.
• The export consignment was facilitated by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), creating new international market opportunities for farmers and Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) in Tripura.
• The four rice varieties included Aromatic Kali Khasa Rice, Aromatic Harinarayan Rice, Biron Rice (white sticky rice) and Maimi Hanga Rice (black rice).
• The rice was aggregated from Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) of Tripura, supported by the Tripura State Organic Farming Development Agency (TSOFDA).
• The consignment is being exported by M/s Pratithi Organic Foods, Sonepat, a leading exporter of Indian organic agricultural products.
• The export initiative aims to strengthen Tripura’s organic value chain, expand international market access and create sustainable export opportunities for local farmers and producers.
• Participating farmers are expected to achieve up to 40% higher price realisation compared with the domestic market, providing an economic incentive for organised and export-oriented production.
• The initiative builds on the Reverse Buyer-Seller Meet (RBSM) organised by APEDA in Tripura in August 2026, which connected potential international buyers with local producers.
• The present shipment demonstrates the conversion of buyer-seller interactions into concrete international business opportunities for farmers and FPCs.
• Austria and the Netherlands are important export destinations because their markets place strong emphasis on quality, food safety, certification and traceability.

• Theme: “Tiger Landscapes: Conservation, Bioeconomy and Ecotourism as Pillars for Livelihood and Income Generation”.
• The workshop was jointly organised by the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
• The workshop focused on recognising tiger landscapes as natural capital and exploring conservation, bioeconomy and ecotourism as drivers of sustainable livelihoods, local income generation and ecological security.

Indian Air Force Successfully Conducts Trial of Indigenous Long-Range Glide Bomb ‘Khagantak-243’

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted the drop trial of Khagantak-243, an indigenously designed and developed Long-Range Glide Bomb (LRGB), strengthening India’s indigenous precision-strike capability.

Key Highlights :

• Khagantak-243 is a 300 kg-class airborne Long-Range Stand-Off Precision Guided Glide Bomb designed to allow fighter aircraft to strike targets from safer stand-off distances.
• The weapon was developed through collaboration between JSR Dynamics Pvt. Ltd., which developed the bomb body and control systems, and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), which supplied the electronics and guidance subsystems.
• JSR Dynamics, a Nagpur-based start-up, developed Khagantak-243 under the Development-cum-Production Partner (DCPP) model in collaboration with BEL, highlighting public-private synergy in India’s defence sector.
• Khagantak-243 carries a 125 kg Mk-81 general-purpose blast fragmentation warhead inside its cylindrical body.
• The bomb features swivel-type mid-body glide wings and five aft control surfaces, with a glide ratio of more than 12.
• Khagantak-243 can reportedly achieve a range of 144 km to 180 km when released from an altitude of 12 km at Mach 0.8.
• Its long-range capability enables IAF fighter aircraft to engage targets deep inside enemy territory while remaining outside the reach of certain air-defence systems.
• The IAF initially tested Khagantak-243 from the Su-30MKI at Pokhran, and the weapon is planned for integration with the MiG-29K and Mirage-2000 fighter aircraft.
• The IAF has already placed a limited-series contract with BEL for the Khagantak-243.
• The Khagantak family also includes the heavier Khagantak-306 and Khagantak-225 variants, which are designed to offer longer ranges.
• Unlike cruise missiles, glide bombs do not use propulsion after release; they rely on aerodynamic lift and control surfaces to glide towards their targets.
• The use of glide bombs provides a cost-effective long-range strike option that can be produced in larger quantities and used against targets such as runways, hardened shelters and command centres.
• The successful trial of Khagantak-243 is expected to strengthen India’s long-range air-to-ground precision-strike capability and support the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision in defence.
• The development is part of India’s effort to reduce dependence on imported weapon systems and promote indigenous design, development and manufacturing of advanced defence technologies.
• Imported SPICE and HAMMER glide bombs were used in Operation Sindoor, highlighting the operational importance of stand-off precision weapons.
• The development of Khagantak-243 follows the DRDO’s 1,000 kg Gaurav Long Range Glide Bomb, which underwent trials in April 2025.
• More than 1,000 Khagantak units were projected to enter IAF service by 2026, which could help bridge India’s capability gap in indigenous glide bombs.
• The programme is expected to significantly reduce India’s import dependency for such weapons, with BEL officials indicating the possibility of reducing dependence from over 70% to below 20%.

• SSSS v5.0 is being conducted as a week-long ocean conservation campaign from 12–19 September 2026, focusing on marine pollution, coastal cleanliness and sustainable use of ocean resources.
• The campaign will culminate around International Coastal Cleanup Day (17 September 2026) and aims to create greater awareness about ocean and coastal conservation.
• The campaign particularly seeks to engage students and youth in activities related to marine environmental protection.
• During the launch, Jitendra Singh unveiled the official SSSS v5.0 website, ocean conservation pledge platform, introductory campaign video, activity schedule video, and digital engagement platforms including the SAGAR PRAHARI mobile application.

• AyurVarta aims to take authentic Ayurvedic knowledge, scientific perspectives and contemporary relevance of Ayurveda to wider audiences in India and abroad.
• The initiative was launched ahead of Ayurveda Day, which will be observed on 23 September.

State Bank of India and SBI Capital Markets Ltd to Dilute 1% Stake in National Stock Exchange Through ₹30,000-Crore IPO

• State Bank of India (SBI) and its subsidiary SBI Capital Markets Ltd (SBICAP) plan to dilute up to 1% stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) through its proposed ₹30,000-crore IPO.
• SBI Chairman C.S. Setty stated that SBI plans to sell 65% stake in NSE, while SBICAP intends to sell 0.35%, taking the combined SBI Group stake sale to around 1%.
• SBI currently holds 23% stake in NSE, while SBI Capital Markets holds 4.33% stake in the exchange.
• The actual stake sold by SBI Group could be lower than 1% if other existing shareholders also participate in the NSE IPO.
• The proposed NSE IPO is expected to be valued at around ₹30,000 crore and will provide an opportunity for existing shareholders to monetise their holdings in India’s largest stock exchange.
• SBI had recently participated in the SBI Mutual Fund IPO along with its foreign partner Amundi, where around 10% stake was diluted through a ₹9,800-crore IPO.
• The SBI Mutual Fund IPO received strong investor demand and was subscribed 42 times.
• Following the SBI Mutual Fund listing, SBI’s holding declined from 76% to 55.46%, while Amundi’s stake declined to 32.56%.
• SBI has stated that there is currently no immediate plan to monetise stakes in its other subsidiaries.

• Karnataka School Education and Literacy Minister Madhu Bangarappa released the Kannada and English editions of Memorable Trials, Unforgettable Cases in Shivamogga, Karnataka.

Key Highlights

• The book was authored by N. Nagamohan Das, former Judge of the Karnataka High Court, and published by Jana Prakashana.
• The book draws upon the author’s notable judicial trials and professional experiences, highlighting justice, rule of law and constitutional principles.
• The Minister appreciated H. N. Nagamohan Das’s efforts to promote awareness of the Constitution of India through his writings after retirement.
• N. Nagamohan Das has also participated in the “Samvidhana Odu” (Read the Constitution) campaign.
• The book aims to strengthen constitutional literacy and civic education, particularly among school students.
