Percentage Practice Questions

1) Of the 1500 residents of a village, 50% are boys of whom 30% are educated. If of all the residents, 40% are educated then what percent of the girls of the village are educated?

A) 20%

B) 50%

C) 75%

D) 30%

Answer: B) 50%

Solution:

Number of boys = 50% of 1500

= 50/100 x 1500

= 750

Number of females = 1500 - 750

Number of educated = 40% of 1500

= 40/100 x 1500

= 600

Number of educated males = 30% of 750

= 30/100 x 750

= 225

Number of educated females = 600 - 225

= 375

Required Percentage = 375/750 x 100 = 50%

 

2) Arun spent 32% of his salary on daily needs, 20% of the rest on car, 28% of the rest on maintenance. If he saves Rs. 12240, find the amount spent by him on maintenance.

A) Rs. 4000

B) Rs. 4560

C) Rs. 3660

D) Rs. 4760

Answer: D) Rs. 4760

Solution:

Let the salary of Arun = Rs. x

x 68/100  80/100 * 72/100 = 12240

⇒ x = 12240 100/72 100/80  100/68

⇒ x = 31250

Amount spent by him on maintenance

= 31250 x 68/100 x 80/100 x 28/100

= Rs. 4760

 

3) In a college 30% of students passed in microbiology, 25% of students passed in chemistry. Then if every student passed in either microbiology or chemistry or both the subjects and 360 members of students passed in both subjects. How many students are there in the class?

A) 7840

B) 7200

C) 6520

D) 7000

Answer: B) 7200 students

Solution:

Students passed in microbiology = 30%

students passed in chemistry = 25%

Only passed in microbiology = 70%

Only passed in chemistry = 75%

The percentage of students passed in both the subjects = 5%

5% = 360

Therefore, 100% = 7200 

 

4) The present population of a city is 12000. The population is increased by 10% in first year, and it is decreased by 20% in next year and third year 15% of the people is increased. What will be the population after 3 years?

A) 12144

B) 12248

C) 10458

D) 11236

Answer: A) 12144

Solution:

After 3 years, the population will be, 

⇒ 12000 (110/100)  (80/100) * (115/100)

⇒ 22*23*24

⇒ 12144

 

5) In a competitive exam, 50% of total candidates failed in current affairs, 40% of candidates failed in aptitude and 10% in both. Find the percentage of those who passed in both the sections?

A) 25%

B) 30%

C) 20%

D) 10%

Answer: C) 20%

Solution:

Percentage of candidates who failed is,

⇒ 50+40 - 10

⇒ 80

Percentage failed in current affairs or aptitude to both

= 80%

Hence percentage passed

(100-80)% = 20%

 

6) The salary of A is 80% more than B while the salary of C is 25% less than the total salary of A and B together then find what is the salary of C if B's salary is Rs. 45000?

A) Rs. 98500

B) Rs. 94500

C) Rs. 84500

D) Rs. 95400

Answer: B) Rs. 94500

Solution:

Salary of A = 45000*180/100

=Rs. 81000

Salary of A and B together = 81000 + 45000

=Rs. 126000

Salary of C = 126000*75/100 = Rs. 94500

 

7) A student got 30% marks and failed by 13 marks and another student got 44% marks and gets 15 more than the passing marks. Find the maximum mark in a certain examination?

A) 200

B) 225 

C) 175

D) 250

Answer: A) 200

Solution: 

Here passing mark is equal. So,

(30/100)*x + 13 = (44/100)*x - 15

(14/100)*x = 28

X = 28*(100/14) = 200

Maximum mark = 200

 

8) A student gets 20% marks and fails by 60 marks. Another student gets 32% marks so he gets 84 marks more than the passing marks. Find the passing percentage?

A) 20%

B) 30%

C) 25%

D) 40%

Answer: C) 25%

Solution:

Let total marks be x,

(20/100)*x + 60 = (32/100)x - 84

(12/100)x = 144

x = 1200

Passing mark = (20/100)*1200 + 60 = 300

Passing % = (300/1200) * 100 = 25%

 

9) 40% of the employees in a factory are workers. All the remaining employees are executives. The annual income of each worker is 390rs. The annual income of each executive is Rs. 420. What is the average annual income of all the employees in the factory together?

A) 390

B) 405

C) 408

D) 415

Answer: C) 408

Solution:

Let total No. of employees be 100.

(40x390 + 60 x 420)/100 = 408

 

10) The price of petrrol is increased by 25%. By how much percent should a car owner should reduce his consumption of petrol so that the expenditure on petrol would not increase?

A) 25%

B) 32%

C) 20%

D) 50%

Answer: C) 20%

Solution:

Reduction % in consumption

= [r/ (100 + r ) x 100] %

= [25/ (100 + 25 ) x 100

= 20%
