  • Geographical Scope: The craft is geographically limited to 19 mandals in the West Godavari and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts of Andhra Pradesh.
  • Narsapur, Palakollu, Razole, and Amalapuram are the major trade hubs for this craft.
  • Cultural and Economic Impact : Narasapur crochet lace-making has a history dating back to the 19th century.

Eknath Shinde Steps Down, To Act as Caretaker Chief Minister Amid Maharashtra Uncertainty  

  • Eknath Shinde resigned as Chief Minister of Maharashtra and was appointed as the caretaker Chief Minister by Governor CP Radhakrishnan as the Maharashtra assembly’s term ended.
  • The resignation marks ongoing uncertainty regarding the next Chief Minister of Maharashtra, despite the landslide victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti (Shiv Sena, BJP, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction) coalition.
  • The BJP-led Mahayuti won 230 out of 288 assembly seats in the recent Maharashtra elections.
  • However, the Shiv Sena's insistence on Eknath Shinde continuing as Chief Minister delayed the formation of the new government.
  • The Mahayuti coalition won a majority, with BJP securing 132 seats, Shiv Sena 57, and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) 41 seats.

  • Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) Chairman & Managing Director (CMD), DK Sunil, is leading a delegation to Russia to sign a deal for the licensed manufacturing of 240 AL-31FP Aero Engines for the Su-30MKI fighter jets.
  • The visit follows a contract signed by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and HAL on September 9, 2024, for these engines.
  • The Su-30MKI fighter jets of the Indian Air Force (IAF) are due for significant upgrades to extend their operational life and enhance their combat capabilities.
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved a fund of ₹63,000 crore for these upgrades.

  • AL-31FP Engine Details:The AL-31FP engines will replace existing engines in the Su-30MKI jets, which are discarded after 2,000 flight hours.
  • A Su-30MKI has a service life of 6,000 hours and requires three sets of engines during its lifetime.
  • Licensing and Manufacturing Agreement:HAL's agreement with Russia will allow for the licensed manufacturing of these engines at HAL’s Koraput Division.
  • HAL will source components from Russia due to the intellectual property and complexity of the engine's design.
  • Challenges in Supply Chain:The supply chain for critical materials, including alloys and raw materials for engine manufacturing, has been disrupted due to global conflicts.
