  • The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has received federal government approval to raise up to ₹19,500 crore ($2.3 billion) through deep-discount bonds.
  • NABARD can raise funds by issuing deep-discount zero-coupon bonds that mature in 10 years, 11 months, and 13 days, with the deadline to complete fundraising by March 2027.

India Halts Rare Earth Exports to Japan to Prioritize Domestic Needs

  • India has directed its state-run miner IREL (India Rare Earths Limited) to suspend a 13-year export agreement with Japan’s Toyotsu Rare Earths India, marking a significant strategic shift amid rising global demand and supply chain uncertainties.
  • This move aims to boost domestic capacity and reduce reliance on imports, especially from China, which recently imposed export restrictions on rare earths.

Key Details:

  • Export Suspension: IREL will halt shipments under the 2012 bilateral deal supplying mostly Neodymium, a rare earth used in electric vehicle (EV) motors and magnets.
  • Rationale: Protect India’s rare earth reserves to meet growing domestic demand, driven by rapid EV and renewable energy expansion.
  • Diplomatic Note: India seeks an amicable resolution with Japan, maintaining strong bilateral ties.

Background:

  • Exports: Over 1,000 metric tons shipped in FY2024; India mined about 2,900 metric tons.
