Scotland Becomes First United Kingdom Nation to Legalise Water Cremation

  • Scotland has become the first nation in the United Kingdom to legalise water cremation (Alkaline Hydrolysis), marking the biggest funeral law reform since 1902 when traditional cremation was introduced.
  • The reform was approved by the Scottish Parliament due to growing demand for environmentally sustainable funeral practices and green end-of-life options.
  • Water cremation (Alkaline Hydrolysis) is considered a green alternative to flame cremation and burial, as it reduces carbon emissions and environmental pollution.
  • In the process, the body is placed in a sealed chamber containing water + potassium hydroxide (alkaline solution) and heated to about 150°C for approximately 90 minutes.
  • The combination of heat, water, and chemicals accelerates natural decomposition, leaving only bones after soft tissues dissolve.
  • The remaining bones are rinsed at high temperature (~120°C), dried, and processed in a cremulator machine to produce ashes similar to traditional cremation.
  • The remaining liquid by-product is safely treated before disposal following environmental regulations.
  • Environmental benefits include lower energy consumption, reduced carbon footprint, and no release of harmful emissions such as carbon dioxide and mercury from dental fillings.
  • Public support was strong; a 2023 public consultation showed 84% of respondents supported legalisation of hydrolysis.
  • The reform reflects growing global interest in sustainable funeral practices and eco-friendly lifestyle choices.
  • Globally, hydrolysis is already legal in 28 states of the United States, and is available in Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
  • The decision may influence future funeral law reforms across other parts of the UK such as England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, due to rising environmental awareness and consumer choice preferences.

Scientists Discover New Genus and Species of Blind Fish in Assam

  • An international research team from Germany, India, and Switzerland discovered a new genus and species of blind aquifer-dwelling (phreatobitic) fish named “Gitchak nakan" in a hand-dug well in Assam, India.
  • The discovery was published in Scientific Reports, a journal under the Nature Portfolio, which is one of the world’s leading scientific research journals.
  • This discovery marks the first record of an aquifer-dwelling fish species from North-East India and the Eastern Himalayan region, highlighting regional biodiversity significance.
  • The name “Gitchak nakan” is derived from the Garo language; “Gitchak” means red, while “na-tok” and “kana” refer to the absence of eyes, describing the fish’s blind characteristics.
  • The species belongs to a new genus within the Cobitidae family, which is known for loach-type fishes commonly found in freshwater ecosystems.
  • The fish is a miniature species, growing to a maximum size of 2 cm, with a translucent body and no skin pigment, giving it a bright red appearance.
  • The most unusual feature of this species is the complete absence of a skull roof, with the brain covered only by skin instead of bone, representing a unique evolutionary adaptation to subterranean habitats.
  • The discovery enhances knowledge of subterranean biodiversity, evolutionary biology, and aquifer ecosystem conservation.

Two New Earthworm Species Found in Kerala’s Silent Valley National Park

  • Researchers discovered two new species of moniligastrid earthworms, namely “Moniligaster girishi” and “Drawida reynoldsi”, in Silent Valley National Park, located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve of the Western Ghats, Kerala.
  • The discovery was published in the peer-reviewed scientific journal Zootaxa, increasing scientific knowledge of earthworm biodiversity and taxonomy.
  • With this discovery, the total number of moniligastrid earthworm species in India increased to 95 species, of which 70 species are found in the Western Ghats, highlighting regional biodiversity richness.

About Moniligaster girishi :

  • Moniligaster girishi was collected from the tropical wet evergreen forests near Chembotti.
  • It belongs to the gravelyi species group and is identified by a single undivided spermathecal atrial gland and a specific prostatic capsule structure.
  • The species is named after P. Girish Kumar, a scientist from the Zoological Survey of India.

About Drawida reynoldsi :

  • Drawida reynoldsi was collected from montane grasslands between Sispara and Anginda.
  • It belongs to the robusta species group and is characterised by a sausage-shaped prostatic capsule and a large, erect spermathecal atrium.
  • The species is named after John Warren Reynolds, a Canadian earthworm specialist.
  • Kerala has the highest diversity of these earthworms, with 43 species, including 30 Drawida species and 13 Moniligaster species, indicating high endemic biodiversity in the region.
  • The discovery highlights the importance of conservation of Western Ghats ecosystems and contributes to understanding soil ecology and biodiversity evolution.
