  • Zomato, a prominent foodtech company, revealed that its subsidiary Zomato Payments Private Limited (ZPPL) has chosen to voluntarily surrender the certificate of authorization obtained from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to function as an online payment aggregator under the Payment and Settlements Systems Act 2007.

  • The Hinduja Group has received the insurance regulator’s approval to conclude the acquisition of Reliance Capital’s (RCap) three insurance companies, a move that will help it complete the resolution process of the debt-laden firm by the May 27 deadline.
  • Russian energy giant Rosneft-backed Nayara Energy is planning to invest ₹600 crore to set up two ethanol manufacturing plants in the country.

  • Chennai-based fintech firm Ippopay Technologies has appointed former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) regional director SMN Swamy as a senior advisor.
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Ajitkumar Vasantrao Sontakke (IOFS) as the Chief Vigilance Officer (CVO) of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) .
  • Senior BJP leader and former cabinet minister Dilip Sanghani has secured his position as the chairman of the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative (IFFCO) for the second consecutive term.
  • Melinda French Gates, one of the world’s preeminent philanthropists, announced that she would resign as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) which she has helped lead since 2000.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has allowed Quant Mutual Fund to hike its stake in RBL Bank to 9.98%.
  • Khanij Bidesh India Limited (KABIL) is in the process of acquiring a lithium block in Australia this year.
  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has granted the State-owned Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) an additional 3 years until May 2027 to comply with minimum public shareholding norms.
  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has granted approval for Pradeep Natarajan to assume the position of Whole Time Director at IDFC FIRST Bank Limited.
  • Shriram Finance, the largest auto-focused non-bank lender, has agreed to sell its entire 85% stake in its housing finance subsidiary to Warburg Pincus for Rs 4,630 crore.
  • State Bank of India (SBI) has executed transaction documents to acquire a 6.125% stake in CCIL IFSC Limited for ₹6.125 crore.
  • ICICI Bank has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in relation to an investment in the equity shares of a company to be incorporated (Target Entity) as a subsidiary of The Clearing Corporation of India (CCIL) along with seven (7) other shareholders.

  • Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) , a global leader in IT services, consulting, and business solutions, has announced the creation of a Global Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence in Paris, during the Choose France Summit, hosted by President Emmanuel Macron.
  • An extremely strong solar storm that hit Earth prompted a stunning display of colours in various parts of the world, including one of the remotest villages in India, Hanle - located in Ladakh.
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is preparing to send astronauts back to the moon and has announced its plan to construct the first lunar railway system, known as FLOAT (Flexible Levitation on a Track).

  • Hyderabad-based Greenko has entered into an agreement with Norway’s Yara Clean Ammonia for a 10 year pact to supply renewable ammonia to the Norwegian firm, which is the world’s largest trader and distributor of ammonia.
  • To enhance economic and trade relations, the UAE-India CEPA Council (UICC) and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
  • Bharti Airtel announced a long-term collaboration with Google Cloud to deliver cloud solutions to Indian businesses.
  • The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the India Electronics and Semiconductor Association (IESA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to promote innovation, support the semiconductor and electronics industry, and strengthen supply chains.
  • Indian merchant payment company Pine Labs has partnered with Emirates NBD, one of the major banks in the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey (MENAT) region to deploy its payment solutions to the bank's business clients.
  • The delegates of India and Zimbabwe held the third session of the India-Zimbabwe Joint Trade Committee (JTC) in Delhi.
  • Indian Oil Corporation Ltd signed a long-term contract with French energy giant TotalEnergies in France for supply of LNG (liquefied natural gas).

  • The Indian Army is set to receive the first Hermes-900 Starliner drone, also known as the Drishti-10 drone, on May 18, 2024, enhancing its surveillance capabilities along the Pakistan border.
  • The Inter-Services Organisations (Command, Control and Discipline) Act has been notified through a Gazette Notification to be enforced with effect from May 10, 2024.
  • The National Security Guard (NSG) is conducting joint counter-terror mock drills with the US Special Operations Forces (SOF) at multiple locations in Kolkata, to enhance interoperability and coordination between the two special forces.
  • The Indian Army has established one of the world's highest tank repair facilities at an altitude of 14,500 feet near the China border in Nyoma.
  • The Indian Army is set to receive Russian Igla-S very short-range air defence systems (VSHORAD) under the fourth tranche of Emergency Procurements (EP).

  • The UAE has once again been recognized as the global leader in Fibre to the Home (FTTH) penetration.
  • According to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), as many as 65 Indian universities and institutes from India, led by the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad, are among the top 2000 globally but the country is losing its competitiveness in higher education on the international stage.
  • China retained its spot as top import partner for India in 2023-24 with goods inflows increasing 3.29 percent (year-on-year) to $101.74 billion, opposed to an overall 5.66 per cent decline in the country’s imports.
  • The 19th Session of the United Nations Forum on Forests (UNFF) was organized from May 6th to 10th May 2024.

  • India’s women’s table tennis player Manika Batra became the first Indian woman to enter the top 25 of the world women’s singles rankings.
  • Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in men's javelin throw at the 27th National Federation Senior Athletics Competition in Bhubaneswar.
  • Brazil was declared the host of the 2027 Women’s World Cup at the FIFA Congress, beating the joint bid of Belgium, Netherlands and Germany to become the first South American country to hold the tournament.
  • The Coca-Cola India Foundation, announces its first-ever partnership with Hockey India, for the National Women's Hockey League 2024.

  • Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi passed away in New Delhi at the age of 72.
  • Veteran Congress leader and former governor of Gujarat Kamla Beniwal passed away at the age of 97.
  • Distinguished media veteran and former President of the Indian Newspaper Society (INS), Naresh Mohan, passed away at the age of 82.
  • Alice Munro, first Canadian author to win the Nobel Prize in literature, has passed away at the age of 92 in Ontario.
  • Legendary Indian banker and former chairman of ICICI Bank Narayanan Vaghul passed away in Chennai at the age of 88.
