  • Axis Bank has confirmed the re-appointment of Amitabh Chaudhry as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank for another three years, starting from January 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027.
  • The re-appointment was approved by shareholders at Axis Bank's 30th Annual General Meeting in July.
  • Final approval was given by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on October 24, 2024.
  • Previous Positions:Before joining Axis Bank, Amitabh Chaudhry served as the MD and CEO of HDFC Standard Life Insurance Company Limited (HDFC Life) for over nine years.
  • He also held senior roles at Infosys, including MD and CEO of Infosys BPO and Head of the Testing Unit at Infosys Technologies Limited.
  • Resignation of Wholesale Banking Head:Ganesh Sankaran, Axis Bank's Group Executive in charge of the Wholesale Banking division, has resigned to pursue other opportunities.
  • His last working day with Axis Bank will be November 30, 2024.

Justice Sanjiv Khanna Set to Be Sworn in as Chief Justice of India on November 11, 2024  

  • The Union government notified the appointment of Justice Sanjiv Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India with effect from November 11, 2024.
  • The appointment was made by the President of India under Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution.
  • Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud, scheduled to retire on November 10, 2024, recommended Justice Khanna as his successor on October 17, 2024.

About Justice Sanjiv Khanna :

  • Born on May 14, 1960, Justice Khanna enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi in 1983.
  • He initially practised in District Courts and, later, in the High Court of Delhi in various fields of law, including constitutional law, direct taxation, arbitration, commercial law, company law, land law, environmental law and medical negligence.
  • He was senior standing counsel for the Income Tax Department.
  • He had also functioned as standing counsel for the National Capital Territory of Delhi and had appeared as Additional Public Prosecutor and amicus curiae in the High Court.
  • He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005 and made a Permanent Judge in 2006.
  • He was appointed as a Judge of the Supreme Court on January 18, 2019.
  • He was ranked 33 in the combined seniority of High Court Judges on all-India basis, but the then Supreme Court Collegium headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had recommended him over others on grounds of merit and integrity.
  • He had led the Supreme Court Bench which gave interim bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to campaign in the Lok Sabha election of 2024.

International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics Governing Board Appoints Himanshu Pathak as Director-General Designate

  • The Governing Board of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (Icrisat) has appointed Himanshu Pathak as the Director -General Designate of the institute.
  • Pathak, who currently serves as Union Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), will assume his role next year.
  • Pathak will be the first Indian to head ICRISAT, a 52-year-old institute based in Patancheru near Hyderabad.
  • He will succeed Jacqueline Hughes in the role.
  • He will be the second Indian to head a Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centres (CGIAR) institute after M S Swaminathan, who led the Philippines-based International Rice Research Institute (IRRI).
