Crisil Forecasts India’s GDP Growth at 6.5% in Fiscal 2026

  • Pioneering Voice in African Literature: Ngũgĩ's debut novel, Weep Not, Child (1964), was the first major English-language novel by an East African author, exploring the impact of colonialism on Kenyan society.
  • Advocate for Indigenous Languages: In a bold move, he transitioned from writing in English to his native Gikuyu language, emphasizing the importance of cultural authenticity. His novel Devil on the Cross (1980) was penned in Gikuyu while he was imprisoned without trial.
  • Political Activism and Exile: Ngũgĩ's outspoken criticism of the Kenyan government led to his imprisonment in 1977 and subsequent exile in 1982. He spent over two decades abroad, during which he continued to write and teach, notably at the University of California, Irvine.
