International Finance Corporation Commits $70 Million to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority for Shore-Power Infrastructure Development

  • The International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private-sector investment arm of the World Bank Group, has committed $70 million (about ₹672 crore) to the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) for developing shore-power infrastructure across its terminals.
  • Shore power, also known as “cold ironing”, will enable ships at berth to switch off their diesel auxiliary engines and use electricity supplied from the land-based grid.
  • The shore-power project is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 63% and harmful air pollution by up to 90%, while generating more than 400 jobs.
  • JNPA will become the first Indian port to deploy shore-power technology at commercial scale, with implementation planned in two phases over the next two to three years.
  • The first phase will focus on one container terminal, while the second phase will cover the remaining terminals.
  • The shore-power infrastructure will include 33-kV substations, cable systems, e-houses, frequency converters and onshore power connection points across multiple berths.
  • The $70-million IFC loan will finance the capital expenditure required for the shore-power infrastructure and is structured as a 10-year External Commercial Borrowing (ECB) without a sovereign guarantee.
  • The financing is described as India’s first blue financing for the maritime sector and the first labelled blue financing for port infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region.
  • The transaction is aligned with the Blue Finance Guidelines under the Indian Ports Act, 2025, supporting environmentally sustainable investments in the maritime sector.
  • The project is also described as the first investment by a Development Finance Institution (DFI) in India’s state-owned major port authorities and the first commercial borrowing by a port authority.
  • IFC has supported JNPA in developing a Sustainable Finance Framework, which is intended to help mobilise additional green and blue financing for future port investments.
  • The initiative is aligned with Maritime India Vision 2030, which aims to make Indian ports globally competitive, digitally advanced and environmentally sustainable.

India’s First Liquefied Natural Gas-Powered Train Flagged Off from Sabarmati

  • India’s first Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)-powered train was flagged off from Sabarmati, Gujarat, by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
  • The initiative marks the introduction of LNG as an alternative fuel for railway operations in India and aims to reduce dependence on conventional diesel fuel and promote alternative energy sources.

Key Highlights

  • The train uses a diesel-plus-LNG dual-fuel system developed for its Driving Power Cars (DPCs).
  • Two 1,400 Horsepower (HP) DPCs at the Sabarmati Integrated Coaching Depot have been converted to the dual-fuel system, enabling the use of LNG alongside diesel.
  • Under the system, LNG can replace up to around 40% of diesel consumption.
  • According to Railway trial data, LNG usage is expected to reduce fuel expenditure and emissions, including carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter.
  • Earlier railway assessments estimated annual savings of around ₹11.9 lakh from one DPC and around ₹23.9 lakh from an eight-coach rake.
  • The dual-fuel system allows the engine to switch between LNG and diesel depending on fuel availability, providing greater operational flexibility.
  • The system has been designed to retain the power and operational capability of conventional diesel engines while enabling partial substitution of diesel with LNG.
  • Each converted DPC has an LNG tank with a capacity of around 2,200 litres, capable of holding approximately 850–900 kilograms of usable LNG.
  • A full LNG tank is expected to provide sufficient fuel for around 1,600 kilometres of operation, thereby reducing the need for frequent refuelling.
  • The LNG-powered train launch was part of a series of railway projects inaugurated and launched during Amit Shah’s visit to Ahmedabad.
  • The overall package includes railway projects worth more than ₹1,542 crore, covering railway safety, signalling, line capacity and freight infrastructure.
  • Earlier, Amit Shah inaugurated the ₹700-crore WAG-12 locomotive maintenance shed at Sabarmati and flagged off a WAG-12 electric locomotive.
  • The programme also included the commissioning of the indigenous Kavach train protection system on the Ahmedabad–Palanpur and Ahmedabad–Samakhiyali sections.
  • The projects further included automatic signalling on two railway sections and the launch of doubling work on the Sabarmati–Sarkhej section.

  • In initial ballistic trials conducted at DRDO-TBRL, Chandigarh, the material successfully stopped rounds fired from the Trichy Assault Rifle (TAR), which is comparable to the AK-47, from a distance of 10 metres at a velocity of approximately 695 metres per second.
  • The technology aims to reduce the weight and thickness of transparent armour by 30–50%, compared with conventional imported armour systems, thereby potentially improving vehicle mobility, fuel efficiency and payload capacity.
  • The bulletproof material is based on glass-ceramic technology, in which nanometre-sized crystals are uniformly dispersed within a specially engineered glass matrix.
  • The crystals are produced through controlled crystallisation of precursor glass and are designed to provide high strength and toughness while retaining transparency.
  • CSIR-CGCRI’s Specialty Glass Division has been developing high-strength transparent nanocrystalline glass-ceramics for armoured vehicles and other defence applications.

Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences Studies X-Ray Emissions of Four TeV Blazars Using NASA’s NICER and NuSTAR

  • Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital,Uttarakhand an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), studied the X-ray emission of four TeV blazars using observations from NASA’s NICER and NuSTAR space telescopes.
  • Researchers Riya Bhowmick and Alok C. Gupta analysed 13 sets of X-ray observations of Mrk 421, Mrk 501, PG 1553+113 and PKS 2155-304.
  • NICER observed lower-energy X-rays, while NuSTAR covered the higher-energy X-ray range, providing a broader view of blazar emissions.
  • Blazars are highly energetic Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) powered by supermassive black holes (SMBHs), with relativistic jets directed almost towards Earth.
  • TeV blazars are an extreme class of blazars that emit very-high-energy gamma rays reaching tera-electronvolt (TeV)
  • Observations of Mrk 421 and Mrk 501 during moderate-to-low activity states revealed an additional lower-energy X-ray component, linked to radiation from the accretion flow around the black hole when jet emission becomes weaker.
  • The X-ray spectra of PG 1553+113 and PKS 2155-304 were explained by the standard blazar emission model.
  • The study, published in The Astrophysical Journal, shows that blazar X-ray emission is not always dominated by a single source and that accretion-flow emission can become detectable when jet activity decreases.
  • The findings provide insights into how active galaxies are powered and how black holes interact with their surrounding environment.
