One MobiKwik Systems Limited Secures Non-Banking Financial Company Approval from Reserve Bank of India

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has approved the Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC) application of One MobiKwik Systems Limited, enabling it to enter the regulated lending business.
  • The approval allows the company to set up its wholly owned subsidiary, MobiKwik Financial Services Private Limited (MFSPL) as a dedicated lending arm, subject to receiving the Certificate of Registration (CoR) from RBI.
  • This move will help MobiKwik evolve into a full-stack financial services platform, expanding beyond payments into direct lending and credit services.
  • The NBFC arm will enable regulated lending operations, offering both secured and unsecured loan products, along with faster product rollout and improved underwriting and risk management.
  • The company’s strategy focuses on consumers and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), particularly in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, to boost financial inclusion and credit accessibility.

Securities and Exchange Board of India Proposes New Framework for Stockbrokers’ Net Worth to Strengthen Capital Adequacy and Investor Protection

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has proposed a new framework for calculating net worth requirements of stockbrokers, aimed at strengthening capital adequacy norms and investor protection.
  • The existing method of calculating net worth based on 10% of average client cash balances has become outdated due to the upstreaming mechanism, where client funds are transferred to clearing corporations.
  • The revised framework aims to better align capital requirements with operational risks and enhance investor safety and market stability.
  • SEBI stated that net worth acts as a “second line of defence” after margin requirements, helping to absorb risks not covered by margin systems.
  • Under the proposed system, variable net worth will be calculated as the aggregate of three components, making the framework more risk-sensitive and structured.
  • These components include 10% of the average credit balance of clients over the last six months, a slab-based requirement linked to active direct clients, and an additional requirement based on clients onboarded through Authorised Persons (APs).
  • The proposal is based on recommendations from a working group comprising the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), and broker associations, ensuring industry-wide consultation.
  • The framework is designed to strengthen risk management in the brokerage ecosystem, improve regulatory compliance, and ensure greater protection for retail investors in the securities market.

HSBC Downgrades India Equity Outlook to “Underweight” Citing Inflation and Weak Domestic Demand Concerns

  • HSBC has downgraded India’s equity market rating from “neutral” to “underweight”, citing concerns over rising inflation, elevated energy prices, and weakening domestic demand.
  • The downgrade reflects expectations of pressure on corporate earnings growth, as macroeconomic headwinds and global uncertainties continue to intensify.
  • HSBC has flagged that the projected ~16% earnings growth for 2026 is likely to be revised downward, due to inflationary pressures and slowing economic activity.

  • The brokerage warned that a renewed rise in inflation, especially due to fuel price adjustments after state elections, could further weaken consumption demand and stress the financial system.
  • Despite strong domestic inflows through Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs), HSBC noted that foreign investment demand must recover for revival in IPO activity and broader market momentum.
  • HSBC, however, identified selective investment opportunities in India, particularly in private sector banks, base metals, and healthcare sectors, despite overall market headwinds.
  • In its global outlook, HSBC upgraded South Korea from “underweight” to “neutral”, calling it a “compelling growth story”, while maintaining a cautious stance on India’s equity market.
