Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India Forms 7-Member Artificial Intelligence Working Group Under Prof. Sandeep Shukla to Oversee AI Governance in Insurance Sector

  • Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) constituted a 7-member Working Group on Artificial Intelligence (WG-AI) under the chairmanship of Sandeep K. Shukla, Director of IIIT Hyderabad, to guide adoption, governance, and oversight of AI technologies in the insurance sector.
  • The WG-AI comprises a total of 7 members including the chairperson and 6 members, with Deepak Gaikwad (GM & CISO, IRDAI) appointed as Member-Convener.
  • The Working Group on AI will assess AI adoption and maturity in the insurance sector, review global AI regulatory practices, and recommend an ethical, transparent AI governance framework for applications such as claims management and fraud prevention.
  • The WG-AI has been mandated to submit its recommendations to the Member (Finance and Investment, F&I) within 3 months from its formation.
  • The IRDAI aims to ensure that AI adoption in the insurance sector is fair, transparent, resilient, and protects policyholders’ data at all times.
  • Rapid advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) are reshaping the cybersecurity and regulatory landscape, creating both opportunities and challenges for insurance sector entities.
  • IRDAI is also working on the IRDAI (Procedure for Making Regulations and Subsidiary Instructions) Regulations, 2026 under the framework of the Sabka Bima Sabki Raksha (Amendment of Insurance Laws) Act, 2025.
  • The proposed regulations include principles such as public consultation, economic analysis framework, and assessment of costs and benefits while framing regulations.
  • The framework also strengthens consultation mechanisms including the Insurance Advisory Committee and additional domain-expert consultation systems for regulatory decision-making.

Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited Elevated from Miniratna-I to Navratna Status by Department of Public Enterprises

  • The Department of Public Enterprises (DPE), Ministry of Finance (MoF) has upgraded Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) from Miniratna Category-I to Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) status.
  • The approval was granted by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman.
  • With this upgradation, CPCL becomes India’s 28th Navratna CPSE.

Key Highlights :

  • In FY 2025–26, CPCL recorded a turnover of ₹59,400 crore and a net profit of ₹3,062 crore, showing a major rise from ₹174 crore in the previous year.
  • The company’s revenue increased to ₹78,611 crore, up from ₹71,050 crore in FY 2024–25.
  • The Navratna status provides CPSEs with enhanced financial and operational autonomy.
  • As a Navratna company, CPCL can now invest up to ₹1,000 crore or 15% of its net worth in a single project without prior government approval.
  • It can also invest up to 30% of net worth annually, subject to a maximum ceiling of ₹1,000 crore.
  • Navratna CPSEs are allowed to undertake capital expenditure for new projects or replacement without monetary ceiling restrictions.
  • They can also enter into technology joint ventures and strategic alliances to expand business operations.
  • To qualify for Navratna status, a CPSE must be a Schedule-A company and hold Miniratna Category-I status.
  • It must secure an “Excellent” or “Very Good” MoU rating in at least 3 of the last 5 years.
  • The company must achieve a composite score of at least 60 out of 100 based on six performance parameters.
  • Key performance indicators include net profit to net worth, manpower cost efficiency, PBDIT to capital employed, profit before interest and taxes to turnover, earnings per share, and inter-sectoral performance.

BSE Introduces India’s First Ethical Investing Index ‘BSE Saatvik 100’ to Promote Value-Based Investing

  • BSE Index Services Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), launched India’s first “Saatvik 100 Index” to promote ethical and value-based investing.

  • BSE is Asia’s oldest exchange and the world’s largest exchange in terms of number of listed companies.
  • The new index is named “BSE Saatvik 100” and is designed to promote ethical investing based on Saatvik principles.
  • The index is derived from the constituents of the BSE 500 Index, selecting companies aligned with ethical and value-based principles.
  • The objective is to provide investors a new avenue for investing in companies that follow responsible and ethical business practices.
  • The index has a base value of 1000, with the first value date set as 20 June 2005.
  • It will be reconstituted every 6 months, in June and December each year.
  • The “Saatvik” concept represents purity, responsibility, and ethical conduct in business practices.
  • The index aligns with the growing trend of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) investing.

Federal Bank Introduces FCNR Max Deposit Scheme Offering 6.25% Interest on USD Deposits for Non-Resident Indians

  • Federal Bank Limited launched the FCNR Max Deposit Scheme, a special Foreign Currency Non-Resident (Bank) [FCNR(B)] deposit product for Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
  • The scheme offers an attractive interest rate of 6.25% per annum on USD-denominated deposits with a tenure of 3–5 years.
  • The objective of the scheme is to provide NRIs a secure and high-yield foreign currency investment option while boosting foreign currency inflows into India.
  • The scheme is valid until 30 September 2026 and was introduced following RBI FCNR(B) swap facility and regulatory relaxations.
  • The scheme benefits from regulatory relaxations including CRR (Cash Reserve Ratio) and SLR (Statutory Liquidity Ratio) exemptions.
  • The scheme is exclusively available for NRIs, with a minimum deposit requirement of USD 500.
  • It offers uniform interest rates, applicable even for deposits above USD 1 million.
  • A one-year lock-in period is applicable from the date of account opening, during which premature withdrawal is not allowed.
  • After the lock-in period, early closure attracts a 1% interest penalty on the applicable rate for the actual holding period.
  • The scheme does not offer auto-renewal, and matured deposits are renewed as regular FCNR cash certificates at prevailing rates.
  • Loans against FCNR(B) deposits are permitted, but overdraft facilities are not allowed.
  • In comparison, Bank of Baroda (BoB) launched the “bob Legend FCNR(B)” scheme with varying interest rates.
  • BoB offers 6.00% for 3–4 years, 6.10% for 4–5 years, and 6.50% for 5-year deposits, effective from 17 June 2026.
  • These initiatives aim to strengthen NRI banking inflows and foreign currency deposit mobilisation in India.

  • Four traditional products of Assam — Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts and Deuri Handloom Products — have received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) Tag.
  • The recognition highlights Assam’s rich cultural heritage, traditional craftsmanship and indigenous knowledge systems while promoting the preservation of unique regional products.
  • With these additions, the number of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD)-supported GI-certified products in Assam has increased to 12.
  • Karbi Anglong Handloom Products represent the weaving traditions of the Karbi community and are known for their distinctive designs, vibrant colours and traditional weaving techniques passed down through generations.
  • Assam Bihu Pepa is a traditional musical instrument made from buffalo horn and is an integral part of the state's famous Bihu festival, symbolising Assam’s rich folk culture.
  • Assam Bamboo Crafts showcase the skills of local artisans who create a variety of utility and decorative products using bamboo, reflecting sustainable and eco-friendly traditional practices.

  • The 52nd Group of Seven (G7) Summit was held from 15–17 June 2026 in Évian-les-Bains, Haute-Savoie, France, under the French Presidency led by President Emmanuel Macron.
  • The summit was conducted under the theme “Working Together to Address Major International Challenges” focusing on global cooperation in energy, peace, and security.
  • The G7 Summit 2026 brought together leaders of the world’s major advanced economies to address key global issues.
  • Major focus areas of the French Presidency included reducing macroeconomic imbalances, strengthening critical mineral value chains, resolving geopolitical crises, and combating organised crime.
  • India participated as a partner country at the G7 Summit 2026 on the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi represented India, marking India’s 13th participation as a partner country in the G7 Summit.

UCO Bank Executive Director Rajendra Kumar Saboo Assigned Additional Charge as Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer

  • The Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance (MoF) approved the appointment of Rajendra Kumar Saboo, Executive Director (ED) of UCO Bank, to hold additional charge as Managing Director (MD) & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the bank.
  • He assumed charge with effect from 19 June 2026 and will continue until 31 August 2026, or until a regular MD & CEO is appointed, or until further orders.
  • The appointment was made following the completion of the tenure of former MD & CEO Ashwani Kumar on 31 May 2026.
  • Rajendra Kumar Saboo is a career banker who began his professional journey as a Probationary Officer (PO) in the erstwhile Oriental Bank of Commerce in 1994.
  • He has extensive experience in field and administrative banking operations across multiple roles.
  • Before joining UCO Bank, he served as Chief General Manager (CGM) at Punjab National Bank (PNB).
  • At PNB, he handled key responsibilities including strategic management, economic advisory, MIS, and data analytics functions.

  • The collaboration aims to jointly develop and market next-generation 155 mm mounted artillery gun systems for global defence markets, enhancing mobile firepower and supporting military modernisation.
  • The platform is based on KSSL’s Mounted Artillery Gun (MARG) system integrated with AM General’s mobility platforms and vehicle expertise.
  • The system features a 52-calibre 155 mm cannon, Soft Recoil Technology (SRT), automated loading assistance, and advanced fire-control systems for both direct and indirect fire missions.

Indian Coast Guard Marks 12th International Day of Yoga Through “Yoga Sangam 2026” Initiative

  • The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 through its flagship initiative “Yoga Sangam 2026.”
  • The theme of International Day of Yoga 2026 was “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.”

  • Coordinated yoga sessions were conducted across all ICG ships and establishments throughout the country.
  • Thousands of Coast Guard personnel and their family members participated in the nationwide yoga programme.

  • Indian Naval Ship (INS) Tarkash, a stealth frigate of the Indian Navy, arrived at Port Louis, Mauritius, on 20 June 2026 during its operational deployment in the South West Indian Ocean Region.
  • The visit is aimed at strengthening maritime cooperation and enhancing bilateral relations between India and Mauritius.
  • Captain Rohit Mishra, the Commanding Officer of INS Tarkash, will call on senior Government of Mauritius and Mauritius Coast Guard officials during the port visit.

  • Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan will also attend the launch event.
  • The programme will be attended by NAFED Chairman Jethabhai Ahir, Managing Director Deepak Agarwal, and other senior officials.
  • During the event, Amit Shah will launch several digital and farmer-centric initiatives of NAFED.

  • India’s first digital repository of space-sector capabilities, named the “Indian Space Industry E-Catalogue”, was launched at the 5th Indian Space Congress (ISC) 2026 held in New Delhi (June 15–17, 2026).
  • The initiative aims to create a single, trusted platform for capability discovery, collaboration, and business development across the Indian space ecosystem.
  • The platform is a comprehensive digital database developed by Satcom Industry Association (SIA-India), covering over 200 verified space and defence companies across nearly 20 domains and 120+ sub-domains.
  • The e-catalogue strengthens India’s space-tech ecosystem by enabling better industry connectivity, innovation, and partnerships.
  • The event also saw the launch of two important reports.
  • The first report titled “Building India’s On-Orbit Servicing and Refuelling Ecosystem: Policy, Partnerships, and Pathways Forward” was developed in collaboration with OrbitAID, focusing on on-orbit satellite servicing capabilities.
  • The second report titled “India’s Strategic Opportunity in Space-Based Compute Infrastructure” was developed with TakeMe2Space, highlighting orbital data centres, in-space computing, AI applications, and sovereign computing capabilities.

Osmania University Becomes First Indian University to Secure Four ISO Management System Certifications at Once

  • Osmania University, Hyderabad (Telangana) became the first university in India to receive four ISO Management System Certifications simultaneously from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (MoCAF&PD).
  • The four certifications include ISO 21001:2018 (Educational Organisations Management System – EOMS), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management System – EMS), ISO 50001:2018 (Energy Management System – EnMS), and ISO 22000:2018 (Food Safety Management System – FSMS).
  • The certification reflects the university’s commitment to quality education, environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, food safety, and global management standards.
  • The Certificates of Grant of Licence were presented at the Senate Hall of Osmania University by Sandeep Kumar Kanojia, Scientist-F and Deputy Director General (Southern Region), BIS.

India and Japan Adopt Rules for Joint Crediting Mechanism under Paris Agreement

  • India and Japan have adopted the Rules of Implementation for the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) under Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, strengthening bilateral cooperation on climate action.
  • The adoption of these rules provides a structured framework for implementing climate mitigation projects and supporting the climate goals of both countries.
  • The Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) is a bilateral carbon market cooperation framework that facilitates projects aimed at reducing or removing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Under this mechanism, one country supports low-carbon projects in another country through investment, technology transfer and capacity building.
  • The emission reductions achieved through these projects are quantified and shared between participating countries as carbon credits.
  • India and Japan signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on the Joint Crediting Mechanism in 2025, laying the foundation for climate collaboration under the Paris Agreement.
  • On 8 June 2026, both countries formally adopted the Rules of Implementation for the Joint Crediting Mechanism.
  • The rules establish a comprehensive governance framework covering project approval, monitoring, validation, verification and issuance of carbon credits.
  • The framework is aligned with Article 6.2 of the Paris Agreement, which allows countries to cooperate voluntarily through internationally transferred mitigation outcomes (ITMOs) to achieve their climate targets.
  • The implementation rules provide for the establishment of a Joint Committee with representatives from both governments to oversee the mechanism.
  • The framework includes transparent project approval procedures, independent third-party validation and verification, sustainable development safeguards, national registries for tracking carbon credits and monitoring of emission reductions.
  • These measures are intended to ensure transparency, accountability and environmental integrity in climate mitigation projects.
  • The mechanism is expected to promote the adoption of clean technologies, encourage private-sector participation and accelerate low-carbon development.
  • The cooperation will help both countries meet their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement while supporting global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

India and Canada Agree to Launch General Security of Information Agreement Negotiations and Accelerate Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement Talks

  • India and Canada have agreed to begin negotiations on a General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA) and accelerate efforts to conclude the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) in 2026.
  • The decision was announced following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on the sidelines of the G7 Summit.
  • The discussions marked an important step towards strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, security, technology, energy and strategic affairs.
  • The proposed General Security of Information Agreement (GSOIA) will provide a framework for the secure exchange, handling and protection of classified information between the two countries.
  • The agreement is expected to facilitate deeper cooperation in defence technology, intelligence sharing, strategic planning and national security matters.
  • GSOIA is considered a foundational arrangement for enhancing defence and security partnerships between countries.

Harmanpreet Kaur Becomes First Cricketer to Play 200 T20 Internationals

  • Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur has created history by becoming the first cricketer, in both men's and women's cricket, to play 200 Twenty20 International (T20I) matches.
  • She achieved the milestone during India's match against South Africa in the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's T20 World Cup 2026 at Old Trafford, Manchester.
  • With this appearance, Harmanpreet surpassed all male and female cricketers to become the first player to reach the landmark of 200 T20I matches.
  • Before the match, she was felicitated by India's head coach Amol Muzumdar and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, who presented her with a special jersey and commemorative cap bearing the number "200".
  • Harmanpreet began her international career with a One Day International (ODI) debut against Pakistan in March 2009.
  • She made her Twenty20 International (T20I) debut against England at Taunton in June 2009.
  • Over the years, she has established herself as one of India's most successful captains and a key match-winner in international cricket.
  • Harmanpreet currently holds the record for the highest number of T20I appearances in women's cricket.
