Demwe Lower Hydel Project in Arunachal Pradesh Gets Environmental Clearance Extension till 2037
- The 1,750-megawatt Demwe Lower Hydel Project in Arunachal Pradesh has received an 11-year extension of environmental clearance till 2037.
- The approval was granted by the Expert Appraisal Committee under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in January 2026, citing prolonged litigation delays.
- The decision has sparked debate over compliance with earlier rulings of the National Green Tribunal and concerns regarding biodiversity in the Lohit basin.
Key Highlights
- The Demwe Lower Project is a 1,750-megawatt hydel project on the Lohit River spanning Anjaw and Lohit districts of Arunachal Pradesh.
- It originally received Environmental Clearance in February 2010, which was set to expire in 2020.
- The validity has now been extended till 2037, treating litigation period as a “zero period” as per a 2025 Office Memorandum.

- The Lohit basin and the Kamlang Tiger Reserve are habitats for the critically endangered White Bellied Heron.
