Fitch Affirms India’s BBB- Rating with Stable Outlook, Highlights Fiscal Risks

• Fitch Ratings reaffirmed India’s sovereign credit rating at BBB- with a Stable Outlook, marking the 20th consecutive year that India has retained this rating.

Key Highlights :

• India’s BBB- rating is the lowest investment-grade rating and has remained unchanged since 2006.
• Fitch Ratings forecast India’s GDP growth at 6.4% in FY27, compared with the 7.4% average annual growth recorded during the previous three years.
• Despite the moderation in growth, Fitch considers India’s medium-term growth prospects strong, supported by public capital expenditure, a potential recovery in private investment and favourable demographics.
• Fitch highlighted high fiscal deficit, government debt and debt-servicing burden as key risks to India’s sovereign credit profile.
• Fitch expects stronger economic growth to gradually improve India’s structural credit indicators and help reduce the government debt-to-GDP ratio.
• Under the FY27 Budget, India’s government debt-to-GDP ratio was estimated at 55.6%, lower than 56.1% in FY26.
• The Government of India has set a target of reducing the debt-to-GDP ratio to 50% by March 2031.
• Fitch estimates India’s medium-term potential GDP growth at 6.4%, supported by public capex, private investment recovery and favourable demographic trends.
• India’s external finances remain strong, supported by a low current account deficit (CAD), net external creditor position and high foreign-exchange reserves.
• Fitch projected India’s current account deficit (CAD) at 1.4% of GDP in FY27, compared with 0.6% in FY26, partly due to the energy shock.
• Fitch expects India’s foreign-exchange reserves to reach around $733 billion by the end of FY27, equivalent to approximately 7.4 months of external payments.
• Capital outflows increased during the June quarter of FY27 amid subdued FDI and portfolio flows, but subsequently reversed following measures taken by the RBI and Government.

Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited and National Institute of Securities Markets Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Establish Commodity Markets Research Centre

• The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Limited (MCX) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Institute of Securities Markets (NISM) at the Global Commodity Conclave 2026 to establish a dedicated Commodity Markets Research Centre.
• The Commodity Markets Research Centre will be housed at NISM and will focus on research, knowledge creation, professional training and market awareness in India’s commodity derivatives market.
• MCX will contribute its commodity-market expertise, including support for course content and assessments, while NISM will provide the academic and research infrastructure for the centre.
• The centre will undertake research in areas such as commodity derivatives, hedging mechanisms, corporate risk management, compliance frameworks, and evolving market practices.
• The centre will conduct applied research studies and prepare policy papers and white papers on issues related to the commodity derivatives market.
• Academic activities of the centre will include Faculty Development Programmes (FDPs), doctoral fellowships, visiting scholar programmes, and academic conferences.

Tamil Nadu-Led Five Southern States Hold Over 80% of India’s Gold Loan Outstanding

• As of 31 March 2026, five southern states — Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana and Kerala — together accounted for more than 80% of India’s gold-loan outstanding, highlighting the strong concentration of gold-backed lending in South India.
• Public Sector Banks (PSBs) had total gold-loan outstanding of more than ₹11.31 lakh crore as of 31 March 2026.
• Tamil Nadu recorded the highest gold-loan outstanding among States and Union Territories at more than ₹4 lakh crore.
• Andhra Pradesh ranked second with gold-loan outstanding of more than ₹2.22 lakh crore.
• Karnataka recorded gold loans of more than ₹98,000 crore, while Telangana and Kerala recorded more than ₹92,000 crore and ₹83,000 crore, respectively.
• The data was presented in the Lok Sabha through a written reply by Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance.
• Despite the increase in gold lending, the asset quality of gold-loan portfolios improved, with defaults declining over the past five years.
• The Gross NPA (GNPA) ratio of gold loans of Scheduled Commercial Banks (SCBs) declined from 0.19% in March 2025 to 0.12% in March 2026.
• The GNPA ratio of gold loans of NBFCs declined significantly from 2.32% in March 2025 to 0.81% in March 2026, indicating improved repayment performance.
• The decline in GNPA ratios reflects improved asset quality, repayment performance and the strength of gold as collateral in gold-backed lending.
• To protect borrowers from distress sales during recovery, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has prescribed safeguards for gold-loan recovery and auctions.
• RBI requires adequate prior notice before auctioning pledged gold, giving borrowers an opportunity to repay their dues before the collateral is sold.
• The reserve price for gold auctions must be at least 90% of the current collateral value, helping protect borrowers against undervaluation.
• Any surplus amount realised from the auction after adjustment of outstanding dues must be refunded to the borrower.
• RBI has also prescribed transparent assaying, valuation, auction and recovery practices to ensure fairness in gold-loan recovery.

Global Central Banks Buy Record 51 Tonnes of Gold in June 2026

• According to the World Gold Council (WGC), central banks continued their gold-buying trend for the third consecutive month in June 2026, purchasing a net 51 tonnes of gold, the highest monthly purchase recorded in 2026 so far.

Key Highlights :

• Poland was the largest central-bank buyer in June, adding 19 tonnes to its gold reserves, followed by China, which purchased 15 tonnes.
• China extended its gold-buying streak to 20 consecutive months, highlighting its continued accumulation of gold reserves.
• Other major gold buyers in June were Uzbekistan (9 tonnes), Kazakhstan (7 tonnes), Jordan (3 tonnes), the Czech Republic (2 tonnes), Turkey (2 tonnes), Ghana (1 tonne), and Georgia (1 tonne).
• Central banks purchased a net 102 tonnes of gold during the first half of 2026, with buying spread across several emerging-market central banks.
• During January–June 2026, Poland was the largest buyer with 82 tonnes, followed by Uzbekistan (41 tonnes), China (40 tonnes), and Kazakhstan (27 tonnes).
• Other major net buyers during the first half of 2026 included the Czech Republic (11 tonnes), Singapore (10 tonnes), Chile (8 tonnes), Jordan (6 tonnes), and Ghana (6 tonnes).
• Central banks were net sellers of 30 tonnes in March 2026, but subsequently became net buyers, purchasing 17 tonnes in April and 41 tonnes in May, followed by 51 tonnes in June.
• Russia remained a major seller of gold, selling 9 tonnes in June and 44 tonnes during the first half of 2026.
• Turkey emerged as the largest gold seller in the first half of 2026, selling 83 tonnes, with most of its selling concentrated in the first quarter, particularly March.
• Turkey’s gold sales declined significantly in the second quarter, when it sold only around 4 tonnes, although it also purchased 2 tonnes in June.
• Turkey reportedly sold and swapped around 58–60 tonnes of gold worth approximately $8 billion to support the Turkish lira and protect its foreign-exchange reserves.

• Theme: “IIHTs: Weaving the Future of the Indian Handloom Sector – Educate. Innovate. Transform.”

Key Highlights

• The conclave was inaugurated by Giriraj Singh, Union Minister of Textiles, in the presence of Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, and Dr. Beena M., Development Commissioner (Handlooms).
• The conclave aims to reposition Indian Institutes of Handloom Technology (IIHTs) as centres of excellence for:
• Technical education
• Research and innovation
• Entrepreneurship
• Industry collaboration
• Technology upgradation
• India has 6 Central IIHTs and 5 State IIHTs, which have produced skilled professionals for the handloom and textile sector for over seven decades.

• The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE), Government of India, convened the India–Japan Stakeholder Consultation on Skill Development in New Delhi to strengthen cooperation on skill development and workforce mobility between India and Japan.
• The consultation brought together representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, State Governments, Sending Organisations, Government of Japan, Japanese industries, recruitment agencies and training partners.

Key Highlights

• The discussions focused on implementing the Action Plan for India–Japan Human Resource Exchange and Cooperation, jointly released during the 15th India–Japan Annual Summit in 2025.
• The consultation focused on preparing Indian youth for employment opportunities in Japan through:

• The third session brought Japanese recruitment companies and employers into direct discussions with Indian stakeholders regarding occupational skills, language proficiency, workplace readiness and candidate support.
• A key outcome was the decision to develop a comprehensive India–Japan Skills Roadmap under the leadership of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
• The roadmap will provide a structured framework for implementing the Employment for Skill Development Programme (ESDP) and its convergence with existing pathways such as Technical Intern Training Programme (TITP) and Specified Skilled Worker (SSW).

India and Southern African Customs Union Sign Terms of Reference for Preferential Trade Agreement Negotiations

• India and the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) for negotiations towards a Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA).
• The ToR was signed at Vanijya Bhawan, New Delhi, establishing the formal framework for negotiations aimed at strengthening bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Key Highlights

• The signing took place in the presence of:
• Piyush Goyal – Union Minister of Commerce and Industry.
• Jitin Prasada – Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.
• Senior officials from India and SACU member countries.
• Piyush Goyal called for a balanced and equitable trade agreement that would expand market opportunities for both India and the SACU region.
• India can support the SACU region through affordable medicines, Information Technology (IT) talent development and integration into global supply chains, according to Goyal.

• The renewed MoU will remain in force for 3 years and aims to establish uniform, scientifically robust and reliable quality standards for medicinal plants used across India's traditional systems of medicine.

• Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), under Digital India Corporation (DIC), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), and NITI Aayog signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to advance multilingual, voice-first Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions for inclusive governance and citizen-centric public service delivery.

Key Highlights

• The collaboration will be implemented through the BHASHINI for Seva/Sanchalan initiative.
• The SoI was signed by:
• Amitabh Nag – Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Digital India BHASHINI Division.
• Shoyabahmed Kalal – Director, NITI Aayog.
• The partnership aims to integrate BHASHINI's multilingual Artificial Intelligence ecosystem into NITI Aayog's digital platforms and services.

• National Institute of Indian Medical Heritage (NIIMH), Hyderabad, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Sevadhi Museum & Indological Research Institute (SEMIRI), Kumaranalloor, Kottayam, Kerala.
• The MoU aims at the systematic digitisation and preparation of a descriptive catalogue of medical manuscripts preserved by SEMIRI.
• SEMIRI has preserved more than 30,000 manuscripts, including temple records, with several manuscripts relating to Ayurveda and allied traditional knowledge systems.
• The medical manuscripts contain valuable information on:
• Ayurvedic medical practices
• Therapeutic methods
• Materia medica
• Diagnostic concepts
• Traditional medical knowledge
• Indian scholarly traditions

Cochin Shipyard Delivers Second HS EcoFreighter Multi-Purpose Vessels ‘MS Maria’ to Germany’s HS Schiffahrts

• Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) delivered MS Maria, the second of eight HS EcoFreighter series Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs), to Germany-based shipping company HS Schiffahrts UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG.
• The Delivery and Acceptance Protocol for MS Maria was signed by Harikrishnan, Director (Operations), CSL, and Heinz Josef Schepers, Director, HS Schiffahrts UG (haftungsbeschränkt) & Co. KG.
• CSL had previously delivered the first vessel of the series, MS Heinz, on 12 January 2026.
• MS Maria was designed by Groot Ship Design, Netherlands, and constructed by Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) according to the classification rules of Det Norske Veritas (DNV).
• The vessel features a raked stem with the Groot Crossbow design, which is optimised to enhance speed performance and fuel efficiency, along with a transom stern.
• MS Maria is a 7,000 DWT (Deadweight Tonnage) ice-class vessel designed for worldwide trade.
• The vessel can carry a wide variety of cargo, including project cargo, heavy cargo, steel coils, containers, timber, paper, dry bulk cargo such as coal and grain, and dangerous goods.
• The vessel is equipped with a single large cargo hold fitted with six movable panels, allowing flexible cargo configurations.
• The cargo hold supports different arrangements, including grain bulkheads at multiple positions and a between-deck arrangement.
• MS Maria is powered by a medium-speed four-stroke diesel engine connected to a controllable-pitch propeller through a reduction gearbox.

Indian Air Force and Royal Malaysian Air Force Begin 3rd Edition of Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) commenced the 3rd edition of Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 at Subang Air Base, Selangor, Malaysia, from 10 to 14 August 2026, with the flying phase from 11 to 13 August.

About Exercise Udara Shakti :

• Exercise Udara Shakti is a biennial bilateral air exercise between India and Malaysia aimed at enhancing interoperability, operational coordination, operational learning, exchange of best practices, and defence cooperation.
• The exercise was inaugurated at the Air Warfare Centre Auditorium, Subang Air Base, by RMAF Exercise Director Colonel Shamsul Shahreen bin Isa and IAF Exercise Director Group Captain Parijat Jha.
• The IAF deployed four Dassault Rafale fighter aircraft from 101 Squadron and two Boeing C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft from No. 81 Squadron.
• Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 marks the first participation of Rafale fighters in this exercise since their induction into the IAF in 2020.
• The RMAF deployed two Sukhoi Su-30MKM fighter aircraft from 12 Squadron, two F/A-18D Hornet fighters from No. 18 Squadron, and one Airbus A400M transport aircraft from No. 8 Squadron.

Bank of America to Take Up to 49.9% Stake in Jio Credit for ₹18,268 Crore

• Bank of America Corporation (BofA) and Jio Financial Services Limited (JFSL) entered into a Joint Venture (JV) Agreement for investment in Jio Credit Limited (JCL).
• Under the agreement, BofA will acquire up to 9% stake in Jio Credit Limited (JCL), the wholly owned NBFC lending subsidiary of Jio Financial Services Limited, through the exercise of warrants.
• The proposed transaction is valued at ₹18,268 crore, equivalent to approximately USD 1.9 billion, and is subject to applicable regulatory and statutory approvals.
• As the initial investment, BofA will acquire a 5% equity stake in JCL through a preferential allotment of equity shares.
• The initial acquisition of 26.5% stake is valued at approximately ₹6,612.90 crore.
• Under the proposed governance structure, the Board of JCL will have equal representation from JFSL and BofA.
• The existing management team of Jio Credit will continue to oversee the company’s strategy and operations.
• The partnership will provide Jio Credit with additional capital to support sustainable loan growth.
• The JV will also provide Jio Credit access to global expertise in financial services, corporate governance, risk management and technology solutions.

Union Minister Amit Shah Launches Gramin Gyan Setu App to Connect Libraries Across Gandhinagar

• Union Minister Amit Shah, who holds the portfolios of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and Ministry of Cooperation, launched the ‘Gramin Gyan Setu’ app through video conferencing to integrate libraries across the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency of Gujarat.
• The Gramin Gyan Setu initiative aims to provide rural children access to a much larger collection of books and promote reading habits, learning and knowledge accessibility in villages.
• The app was launched on the birth anniversary of Padma Shri S. R. Ranganathan, which is observed as National Library Day, highlighting the role of libraries in promoting knowledge, reading and education.
• The initiative aims to establish a library in every village, preferably near schools, to encourage children to read, learn and acquire knowledge.
• Around 63 village libraries have already been established under the initiative, while 752 libraries have been connected through the Gramin Gyan Setu app.
• Four major libraries, collectively holding around 8 lakh books, have been linked with the rural libraries through the app, significantly expanding the range of books available to village children.
• MPLADS-funded vans will visit villages every fortnight to collect issued books and deliver books requested by villagers through the Gramin Gyan Setu app.
• The book-delivery mechanism will enable rural children to access a wider variety of books without requiring every village library to maintain a very large collection.

• Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, launched the revamped India Code Portal on 13 August 2026 at Kartavya Bhavan 2, New Delhi.

Key Highlights :

• The India Code Portal is the official digital repository of Indian legislation maintained by the Legislative Department.
• India Code provides a unified digital repository of the Constitution of India, Central Acts, subordinate legislation, State Acts, State subordinate legislation, and Union Territory legislations and regulations.
• The revamped portal aims to make access to laws simpler, faster, wider and more citizen-centric through modern digital technologies.
• The portal introduces AI-assisted search and interaction, enabling users to search and access legislative information more efficiently.
• Important search features include semantic search and speech-based search, along with improved navigation across different legislations.
• The portal enables users to access amendments and legislative history and provides links between Acts and relevant subordinate legislation.
• The revamped India Code Portal is integrated with the e-Gazette ecosystem, providing easier access to official government notifications and legal instruments.
• The portal also provides QR-enabled access, improved document viewing and a structured citizen-feedback mechanism.
• A major feature is AI-assisted multilingual access to laws in all 22 languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
• The technological upgrade aims to transform India Code from merely an online repository of legislation into a digital gateway to law.

University of Delhi Scientists Discover Three New Cascade Frog Species in Northeast India

• Scientists led by S. D. Biju of the Department of Environmental Studies, University of Delhi discovered three new species of cascade frogs in the biodiverse forests of Northeast India.
• The three newly identified species are Ammachi’s Cascade Frog (Amolops ammachi) from Jampui Hills, Tripura, Sendenyu Cascade Frog (Amolops sendenyu) from Nagaland, and Beautiful Cascade Frog (Amolops bella) from West Bengal.
• Ammachi’s Cascade Frog (Amolops ammachi) was named after Padmini Varkey, a Kerala-based social worker and philanthropist who was affectionately known as “Ammachi”, meaning mother.
• Amolops ammachi is a medium-sized frog measuring around 80 mm and is characterised by a light brown body with olive-green reticulated patterns.
• Sendenyu Cascade Frog (Amolops sendenyu) was discovered in Nagaland and was named after Sendenyu Village.
• Beautiful Cascade Frog (Amolops bella) was discovered in West Bengal and is characterised by a striking green body with yellowish-green or reddish-brown mosaic patterns.
• The research was based on more than 15 years of extensive fieldwork covering over 300 geographic frog populations inhabiting fast-flowing forest streams.
• Scientists used DNA sequencing/analyses along with detailed morphological comparisons of adult frogs and tadpoles to confirm that the populations represented three species previously unknown to science.
• The findings were published in the peer-reviewed Bulletin of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University, highlighting India's rich amphibian diversity.
• The study also documented five cascade frog species that had never previously been recorded in India, expanding the known diversity and distribution of the genus Amolops in the country.
• The five newly recorded species are Marbled Cascade Frog (Amolops afghanus), Nepal Cascade Frog (Amolops nepalicus), Wangyal’s Cascade Frog (Amolops wangyali), Medog Cascade Frog (Amolops medogensis), and Pianma Cascade Frog (Amolops bellulus).
• The researchers used DNA-based dating analyses to reconstruct the evolutionary history of cascade frogs.
• The study indicates that cascade frogs underwent extensive diversification around 32 million years ago during the Eocene–Oligocene transition, a period associated with widespread biological turnover.
• The research suggests that cascade frogs experienced multiple waves of colonisation from east to west across Asia.
• The study identifies the early uplift of the Himalayas as a key factor that shaped the present-day distribution and diversity of cascade frogs.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration Invites Indian Space Research Organisation to Participate in Lunar Moon Base Programme

• NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) has invited the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to participate in its Moon Base Programme, marking an expansion of India–US space cooperation from Earth observation and individual missions towards long-term lunar exploration and human spaceflight.
• The formal invitation was extended during the 9th meeting of the India–US Civil Space Joint Working Group (CSJWG) held at ISRO headquarters in Bengaluru.
• NASA’s Moon Base Programme aims to establish humanity’s first long-term outpost on another celestial body, near the Moon’s South Pole, through a combination of robotic and crewed missions.
• The programme will be implemented in three broad phases, covering robotic exploration, infrastructure development and the establishment of a permanent lunar outpost.
• Phase 1 (up to 2029) will focus mainly on robotic exploration of the lunar South Pole, technology demonstrations and preparations for future human operations.
• Phase 2 (2029–2032) will focus on developing and deploying essential systems and infrastructure for sustained lunar operations, including technologies to support astronauts and scientific activities.
• Phase 3 will involve assembling a permanent lunar outpost where astronauts can live, work and conduct scientific research for extended periods.
• The proposed lunar outpost would provide valuable experience in long-duration human operations in an environment far from Earth and help advance technologies for future deep-space exploration.
• The Moon Base Programme was announced during NASA’s “Ignition” event on 24 March 2026, as part of initiatives to implement the US National Space Policy and strengthen American leadership in space.
• India’s participation would further deepen cooperation between NASA and ISRO in lunar exploration, human spaceflight, space technology and civil space activities.
• The Artemis Accords were established in 2020 by NASA, the US Department of State and seven initial signatories as a non-binding framework for peaceful, safe, transparent and sustainable civil exploration of the Moon, Mars and other celestial bodies.
