IIT Bhubaneswar Develops ‘ArsenSafe’ Portable Device for Detecting Arsenic in Drinking Water

  • The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar developed ‘ArsenSafe’, a portable device capable of detecting arsenic contamination in drinking water without the need for laboratory facilities.
  • The technology was developed by the Sensors and Spectroscopy Research Group of IIT Bhubaneswar in collaboration with Nano Semic Private Limited, a startup incubated at the institute’s Research and Entrepreneurship Park.
  • ArsenSafe provides a rapid, affordable, and highly sensitive on-site testing solution, especially useful for rural and resource-constrained areas.
  • The device uses an advanced reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-based sensing platform and a liquid-gated reduced graphene oxide field-effect transistor (rGO-FET) sensor to detect extremely low concentrations of arsenic.
  • The technology combines nanotechnology, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), graphene oxide (GO) dielectric layers, and machine learning to improve the sensitivity and accuracy of water quality monitoring.
  • ArsenSafe is portable, cost-effective, easy to operate, and does not require sophisticated laboratory infrastructure.
  • The device demonstrated a maximum response of 500% at 40 parts per million (ppm) arsenic concentration, with a response time of 17.4 seconds and a recovery time of 11.76 seconds.
  • Long-term exposure to arsenic-contaminated water can cause health problems such as arsenicosis, skin diseases, cardiovascular disorders, neurological problems, and various forms of cancer.
