Reserve Bank of India Grants Regulatory Approvals to RNFI Services, PB Pay and ICICI Prudential AMC

• RNFI Services Limited., a leading fintech platform, secured in-principle authorisation from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate as a Payment Aggregator-Physical (PA-P) under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act (PSS Act), 2007.
• The authorisation will enable RNFI Services Ltd. to offer physical, in-store payment services through its existing distribution and field network, subject to the conditions specified by the RBI.
• PB Pay Private Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PB Fintech, officially started commercial operations as a Payment Aggregator (PA) after securing regulatory authorisation from the RBI in February 2026.
• PB Pay Private Limited operates as a Payment Aggregator (PA), facilitating digital payment transactions between merchants and customers.
• The RBI approved the acquisition of an aggregate holding of up to 95% of CSB Bank Ltd.’s paid-up share capital or voting rights by ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (AMC).

Niyo Secures GIFT City Licence to Broaden Cross-Border Financial Services

• Niyo, a fintech platform, secured a Payment Service Provider (PSP) licence from the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA) to operate from Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), Gandhinagar, Gujarat, enabling it to expand its cross-border financial services beyond travel forex.
• The PSP licence granted by IFSCA gives Niyo a regulated base within GIFT City to develop and scale international financial solutions for customers with cross-border financial requirements.
• Niyo plans to extend its services beyond traditional travel foreign exchange to cater to Indians involved in international education, overseas employment, global spending, and cross-border money movement.
• Niyo plans to combine its digital technology platform with an expanding physical branch network to offer both digital and assisted financial services.

India’s Direct Tax Buoyancy Stays Above 1 for Third Straight Year at 1.39 in 2024–25

• India’s direct tax buoyancy remained above 1 for the third consecutive financial year in 2024–25, reaching 39, indicating that direct tax collections grew faster than nominal GDP.
• Direct tax buoyancy measures the growth in direct tax revenue relative to the growth in nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and shows the responsiveness of tax revenues to overall economic activity.
• A tax buoyancy value above 1 means that tax revenue is growing faster than GDP, while a value below 1 indicates that tax revenue is growing slower than GDP.
• India’s direct tax buoyancy increased from 27 in 2022–23 to 1.48 in 2023–24, before moderating to 1.39 in 2024–25, remaining comfortably above 1.
• Direct taxes in India include personal income tax, corporate tax, Securities Transaction Tax (STT) and other taxes imposed directly on income or profits.
• The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) administers direct taxes under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance.
• Personal income tax and corporate tax are the two largest components of India’s direct tax structure.
• The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Bhartruhari Mahtab, examined direct tax reforms, taxpayer compliance, revenue collection and tax buoyancy in 2026.
• The government’s reforms in the direct tax regime have focused on systemic reforms, ease of compliance, voluntary compliance, simplification of procedures and reduction of administrative burden.
• In 2019, the government reduced the corporate tax rate for domestic manufacturing companies from 30% to 22% and for new manufacturing companies from 25% to 15% to attract investment.
• The Union Budget 2025–26 provided income-tax exemption up to ₹12 lakh for individuals under the new tax regime.
• For salaried taxpayers, the effective tax-free income threshold became ₹12.75 lakh after considering the standard deduction under the new tax regime.
• The Income-tax Act, 2025 came into force on 1 April 2026, replacing the Income-tax Act, 1961, with the objective of simplifying and modernising the direct tax framework.
• The new tax regime is an optional tax framework under the Income-tax Act, 2025.
• The government stated that direct-tax reforms are aimed at enhancing voluntary compliance, reducing administrative burden, strengthening taxpayer-government trust and improving revenue collection.
• The Parliamentary Standing Committee, in its 13th Report on the Ministry of Finance’s Demands for Grants (2026–27) dated 11 March 2026, observed that strategic tax-rate rationalisation had yielded highly positive results.
• According to data submitted by the Department of Revenue, India’s gross tax-to-GDP ratio improved from 10% in 2019–20 to an estimated 2% in the 2026–27 Budget Estimates (BE).
• The improvement in tax buoyancy and gross tax-to-GDP ratio reflects stronger tax revenue mobilisation and improved tax responsiveness to economic growth.

Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 Launched by Ministry of Women and Child Development

• The Ministry of Women and Child Development launched the ninth edition of Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026, beginning a month-long nationwide campaign to strengthen nutrition awareness, community participation and grassroots delivery of nutrition services.
• Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026 is being observed from September 9 to October 8, 2026, under the theme “Hamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedari”.
• The campaign focuses on dietary diversity, adequate protein intake, fresh hot cooked meals, maternal health and early childhood development.
• The campaign was formally launched at the Rudraksh International Cooperation and Convention Centre, Varanasi, in the presence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi, Minister of State Savitri Thakur and Uttar Pradesh Minister for Women Welfare, Child Development and Nutrition Baby Rani Maurya.

• Anganwadi Centres in Uttar Pradesh have been upgraded into community institutions with improved infrastructure and learning environments.
• Anganwadi Workers are using smartphones for real-time data entry and digital monitoring to improve service delivery.
• Anganwadi Centres provide Hot Cooked Meals and Take Home Ration to eligible beneficiaries, supporting the nutritional needs of children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
• Union Minister Annpurna Devi stated that the government is working to improve nutrition outcomes through Mission Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0.
• The government is upgrading 2 lakh Anganwadi Centres into Saksham Anganwadis, with around 24,000 centres approved in Uttar Pradesh.
• The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana has completed 10 years of implementation.
• More than ₹21,000 crore has been transferred through Direct Benefit Transfer to over 4.65 crore mothers across the country under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.
• Savitri Thakur, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, called upon communities, Panchayati Raj Institutions, Self-Help Groups and families to actively participate in strengthening nutrition and childcare services.
• A Poshan Mela was organised at the launch venue, showcasing local nutritious foods, nutrition-related innovations and best practices adopted by Anganwadi Centres.
• The event also featured beneficiary testimonials and films highlighting Hot Cooked Meals, Take Home Ration, home visits, and early childhood care and education.
• Since the launch of Poshan Abhiyaan in 2018, more than 150 crore Jan Andolan activities have been conducted through Poshan Maah, Poshan Pakhwada and other community engagement initiatives.
• During Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2026, activities across the country will focus on:

• Community ownership through Anganwadi Management Committees and Supplementary Nutrition Programme Menu Boards

Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit and Sandbox Launched by Unique Identification Authority of India

• The Unique Identification Authority of India launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit and Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
• The Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit enables ecosystem partners to integrate Aadhaar Face Authentication directly into native Android and iOS applications.

Key Highlights

• The Software Development Kit eliminates the need for users to switch between applications, providing a seamless single-app authentication experience.
• It is a ready-to-use solution with Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning-based liveness detection and anti-spoofing capabilities.
• The Software Development Kit supports secure handling and encryption of authentication data and is designed to work across consumer smartphones.
• It is expected to help government departments, banks, fintech companies and other organisations deploy Face Authentication-enabled services more efficiently.
• The Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox provides a secure and controlled environment for organisations to integrate, test and validate the complete Face Authentication process before production onboarding.
• Developers and quality assurance teams can test user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness checks, authentication, error handling and response validation without requiring external biometric hardware.
• The Sandbox also allows organisations to test failure scenarios such as invalid digital signatures, network interruptions, timeouts and spoofing attempts.
• The launch addresses the long-standing requirement of the fintech and banking ecosystem for a seamless and secure customer onboarding process within their own mobile applications.
• Earlier, users needed the Aadhaar FaceRD application as a background application for a similar Face Authentication experience, making onboarding longer and dependent on the presence of an additional application.
• With the new Software Development Kit, users can perform Aadhaar Face Authentication directly within applications such as banking, insurance and broking applications, reducing the need for multiple applications.
• The indigenously engineered Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning-driven Aadhaar Face Authentication solution was launched in 2021.
• The Face Authentication technology has processed over 500 crore transactions and has been adopted by nearly 200 entities, including Union Government ministries and departments, State Governments, banks, Non-Banking Financial Companies, telecom operators, brokerage firms and certifying authorities.
• The technology received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2023 under the Innovation category.
• Aadhaar Face Authentication is used for services including Digital Life Certificate submission through Jeevan Pramaan, Ayushman Bharat beneficiary onboarding, Direct Benefit Transfer schemes, Aadhaar-enabled payments, SIM activation through electronic Know Your Customer, and beneficiary authentication for schemes such as PM e-Drive, PM Awas Yojana and PM Kisan.
• The Unique Identification Authority of India also unveiled the “Playbook on Ease of Onboarding”, which will guide Banking, Financial Services and Insurance entities in joining the UIDAI authentication ecosystem for identity verification of customers, staff and business partners.
• Kotak Mahindra Bank, Bajaj Finance Limited and Airtel Payments Bank successfully completed the Proof of Concept for testing the Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit and became early adopters of the technology in their mobile applications.
• Motilal Oswal Financial Services Limited and Poonawalla Fincorp were among the early users of the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox and contributed to its testing and validation.

Karnataka Cabinet Approves Aerospace, Textile and Startup Policies for 2026

• The Karnataka State Cabinet approved the Karnataka Aerospace Policy 2026–2031, targeting around ₹60,000 crore investment and the creation of 60,000 jobs over the next five years.
• The policy focuses on aerospace, defence, aviation, space technologies, drones, avionics and space research and development, with the objective of expanding the aerospace and defence ecosystem beyond Bengaluru.
• To encourage private investment, the government has classified areas into focus and non-focus areas and introduced differentiated incentives.
• Capital subsidy has been fixed at 30% in Zone 1 and 25% in Zone 3, while the subsidy for non-focus areas has been increased from 1.75%–2.25% to 25%.

Key Highlights

• The Cabinet approved the New Textile and Readymade Garments Policy 2026–2031, which, for the first time, includes the silk industry. The policy targets around ₹20,000 crore investment and provides approximately ₹4,000 crore in financial assistance and subsidies.
• 33 focus taluks have been identified under the textile policy, with incentives including credit-linked capital subsidy and power subsidy to encourage investments outside Bengaluru.
• The Cabinet also approved the Karnataka Startup Policy 2025–2030, including the Government First initiative under the ELEVATE programme, with an allocation of ₹25 crore.
• The initiative aims to make the government an early adopter of emerging technologies through innovation-led public procurement.
• A drone testing facility will be established at Jedarahalli in Chintamani taluk of Chikkaballapur district at an estimated cost of ₹42.83 crore.
• It will support testing and development of drone technologies for areas such as disaster management and healthcare.
• The Cabinet approved a Karnataka Artificial Intelligence Hub at the International Institute of Information Technology Bengaluru at a cost of ₹35 crore.
• The hub will provide seed support, incubation, internships, mentorship, practical projects and case studies and will complement the proposed Artificial Intelligence University.
• The Cabinet approved the revival of student union elections in colleges and universities from the 2026–27 academic year to promote leadership, responsibility and democratic values.
• The proposed student bodies will include a president, two vice-presidents, general secretary and two joint secretaries, with one vice-president and one joint secretary reserved for women. The executive committee will have six members, including two women.
• The government stated that there would be no caste-based reservation in student union elections and that student organisations would not be allowed to function as fronts for political parties.
• The Udyoga Nidhi Scheme was approved to promote employment generation in 10 of the most backward districts of North Karnataka. Industries creating new jobs will receive an incentive of ₹2,500 per worker per month for two years, with around ₹300 crore allocated for the programme.
• The scheme will encourage investments in sectors including aerospace, defence, drones, automobiles, semiconductors, telecommunications, biotechnology and medical equipment, particularly in economically backward regions.
• The Shramika Nivasa initiative was approved to encourage industries to provide accommodation for workers near workplaces. Incentives, including tax concessions, will be provided, with the scheme to be implemented in phases.
• The Cabinet approved the Chief Minister Negila Yogi Scheme with an estimated outlay of ₹152.28 crore to promote mechanised farming and bring cultivable but fallow land back under production.
• The scheme will initially be implemented as a pilot in 31 taluks, with one taluk selected in each district. Farmers owning up to three acres will receive free ploughing services using government-rented tractors. The government is also considering procuring around 500 tractors.
• The Cabinet approved the Shakti Smart Card project for the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation at an estimated cost of ₹237 crore. The cards will primarily serve as identification for women beneficiaries travelling under the Shakti Scheme and will enable digital recording of travel-related information.
• The Cabinet approved ₹10.78 crore for information technology hardware infrastructure for the Tele-Intensive Care Unit project, which will connect 185 government health institutions through 11 hubs.
• The first phase of the Karnataka Digital Radiography Mission was approved at an estimated cost of ₹40.50 crore to upgrade up to 162 eligible X-ray systems in government hospitals to digital radiography systems.
• Another ₹20.39 crore was approved for equipment for ear surgeries and hearing-loss screening in 50 taluk hospitals, along with the engagement of 50 audiologists on a contractual basis.
• The Cabinet approved the state-wide Tega Siri tree development programme at an estimated cost of ₹493.09 crore. Farmers will be encouraged to cultivate teak trees on suitable roadside and other lands for 10–15 years and will receive 70% of the proceeds from harvesting.
• A Geographic Information System-based Road Network Grid Plan was considered for urban areas and towns with approved master plans or master plans under preparation. The government plans to develop ring roads around taluk and district headquarters and other urban centres.
• The government plans to restart membership enrolment for the Bharat Jodo Youth Association after resolving technical issues. Around 7.36 lakh associations have already been registered against a target of 10 lakh. The programme covers youth aged 16–35 years.
• The government plans to distribute around 15 lakh house sites across Karnataka, with preference for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes and minorities. Around 5 lakh sites are proposed in the first phase during September and October, with approximately 10,000 acres identified.
• Regarding drought, 101 taluks have already been declared drought-affected, while ground-truthing has been completed in 24 of another 42 taluks. The remaining 18 taluks will be assessed.
• Karnataka has estimated drought-related losses at around ₹18,000 crore and plans to submit a memorandum to the Central Government seeking assistance under the National Disaster Response Fund guidelines.
• The drought assessment is being carried out using parameters including rainfall, satellite imagery, soil moisture, green cover and dry spells.
• The NICE land and site-allotment issue was not discussed at the Cabinet meeting.

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan Releases Books at Gauhati University, Assam

• Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan laid the foundation stone for ₹110 crore infrastructure development projects at Gauhati University, Assam.
• The projects include a new multidisciplinary academic building, a new boys’ hostel, a new international students’ hostel, and development works related to the auditorium and library.
• On the occasion, the Vice-President released the book “Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs”, edited by Ankuran Dutta and Nani Gopal Mahanta.

Key Highlights

• The book highlights the life, musical journey and cultural legacy of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, popularly known as the “Bard of Brahmaputra”, and commemorates his birth centenary.
• Dr. Bhupen Hazarika was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1992, Padma Vibhushan in 2012 in the field of Arts, and the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 2019.
• The Vice-President also released the 5th revised and enlarged edition of “Chandrakanta Abhidhan”, an important work of Assamese lexicography.
• The revised edition, published by Gauhati University Press, provides expanded linguistic resources and contributes to the development and preservation of the Assamese language.
• Gauhati University was established on January 26, 1948, and is recognised as the first university in Northeast India. Its establishment followed a sustained public movement led by eminent leaders, including Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi.
• Gauhati University has received National Assessment and Accreditation Council A+ accreditation and secured 9th rank among State Public Universities in the National Institutional Ranking Framework 2025.
• The Vice-President urged students and scholars to contribute towards Viksit Bharat @2047 by undertaking research addressing community challenges, ensuring that technology serves humanity and promoting innovation for inclusive development.
• During the programme, the Vice-President also led students and participants in taking the “No to Drugs” pledge, encouraging young people to avoid substance abuse, maintain self-discipline, manage their time effectively and limit excessive social media use.

Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena Assigned Additional Charge of Jammu & Kashmir Lt Gov

• President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed Vinai Kumar Saxena, the Lieutenant Governor (Lt Gov) of Ladakh, to discharge the functions of the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K) in addition to his own duties.
• Saxena has been given the additional charge of J&K during the absence on leave of the incumbent Lt Gov Manoj Sinha, ensuring administrative continuity in the Union Territory.
• Manoj Sinha assumed office as the 2nd Lieutenant Governor of J&K on 7 August 2020, succeeding C. Murmu.
• Manoj Sinha is currently on leave and is in the United States, where he addressed the IIT (BHU) Global Alumni Meet in Chicago, Illinois.
• Vinai Kumar Saxena took charge as the 4th Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh on 13 March 2026, after serving as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi from 2022 to 2026.
• As part of his additional responsibilities, Vinai Kumar Saxena will administer the oath of office to Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati, the newly appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of J&K and Ladakh.
• C. Murmu was the 1st Lieutenant Governor of J&K after the erstwhile State of Jammu & Kashmir was bifurcated into the two Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
• The bifurcation of the erstwhile State of J&K followed the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A on 5 August 2019.
• The decision to assign Saxena the additional charge came days after J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi.
• Ministers of the National Conference have repeatedly alleged that Lt Gov Manoj Sinha interfered in the functioning of the Omar Abdullah-led J&K Government.
• Manoj Sinha is a three-time BJP MP, former Union Minister, and former member of the BJP National Council (1989–1996).
• There has been speculation regarding Manoj Sinha’s future political role, including a possible return to active politics in Uttar Pradesh or induction into the Union Cabinet; these remain political speculation rather than confirmed decisions.

INS Mysore Reaches Lumut, Malaysia for the 4th Edition of Exercise Samudra Laksamana

• Indian Naval Ship (INS) Mysore arrived at Lumut, Malaysia, on 9 September 2026 to participate in the 4th edition of bilateral maritime exercise ‘Samudra Laksamana’ between the Indian Navy and the Royal Malaysian Navy.
• Exercise Samudra Laksamana is a bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and Royal Malaysian Navy, with the 4/26 edition being the fourth iteration of the exercise.
• The exercise includes professional engagements in harbour and at sea, such as cross-deck visits, operational interactions, tactical briefings, and sporting engagements.
• The activities provide opportunities for personnel of both navies to exchange professional experiences, enhance interoperability, strengthen tactical coordination, and foster greater mutual understanding.
• INS Mysore is a Delhi-class guided-missile destroyer of the Indian Navy, commissioned as a multi-role surface combatant capable of anti-air, anti-surface, and anti-submarine warfare.
• The Royal Malaysian Navy warmly welcomed INS Mysore at Lumut Naval Base, with the delegation led by Captain Mohd Husni bin Aris RMN, Director of Planning and Contingency at Western Fleet Command Headquarters.
• The Malaysian warships scheduled to participate in the exercise are KD Lekir and KD Gagah Samudera.
• The visit builds upon recent bilateral engagements, including the 12th India–Malaysia Sub Committee Meeting, held on 1 July 2026.
• The deployment highlights the strong and enduring maritime partnership between India and Malaysia and reflects the expanding scope of maritime cooperation and professional exchanges between the two countries.
• Exercise Samudra Laksamana 4/26 is aligned with the Government of India’s vision of MAHASAGAR and the ASEAN–India Year of Maritime Cooperation 2026.

• AASHVAST has been established to detect Chinese components and assess vulnerabilities in unmanned systems (drones) used by the Indian Army.

Stanzin Tsangyang Becomes First Woman Army Officer from Ladakh’s Zanskar Region

• Stanzin Tsangyang was commissioned into the Indian Army on 5 September 2026 at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai, becoming the first woman officer from the Zanskar region of Ladakh to be commissioned into the Indian Army.
• Tsangyang was part of a batch of 342 cadets who successfully completed training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai.
• The latest OTA batch included 313 men and 29 women, who were commissioned into various services.
• 17 cadets from friendly foreign countries, comprising 7 men and 10 women from Seychelles, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, Bhutan, and Lesotho, also completed their training.
• The Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai is one of the principal training institutions of the Indian Army and trains Short Service Commission (SSC) officers, including women officers.
• Zanskar is a high-altitude and remote region of Ladakh known for its difficult terrain and sparse population; at the time of Tsangyang’s enrollment, Zanskar was part of Kargil district and was later notified as a separate district in 2026.
• Stanzin Tsangyang, aged 24, studied for 14 years at Lamdon Model School in Leh, Ladakh, and later pursued Mechanical Engineering at Tezpur University, Assam, under a scholarship.
• During her college years, Tsangyang joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where she learned about the various pathways to becoming an Indian Army officer, which helped begin her journey towards the armed forces.
• Tsangyang comes from a non-military family and community, with her father Tundup Tsering being a schoolteacher and her mother being Rigzin Ladol; her parents travelled from Ladakh to Chennai to attend her commissioning parade.
• Lieutenant Shivam Ahlawat continued a five-generation military legacy spanning more than 140 years by joining Skinner’s Horse, with his family having served in conflicts including France and Flanders, China, Italy, Goa, Kargil, and counter-insurgency operations in Northeast India.
• Ritika Dubey from Gorakhpur became the first member of her family to pursue a career in the armed forces.

Defence Research and Development Organisation Introduces ‘SHIELD’ Programme for High-Power Microwave Defence Testing

• The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) launched the ‘SHIELD’ programme, aimed at strengthening India’s indigenous capabilities in the emerging Directed-Energy Technology
• SHIELD stands for S-band High-Power Microwave Integrated Evaluation System for Lethality and Damage.
• The programme is being undertaken under DRDO’s Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme, which promotes industry-led defence innovation and supports self-reliance in defence technology.
• DRDO has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) under the TDF scheme, inviting Indian industry to develop the specialised SHIELD evaluation system.
• The TDF supports defence technology development by Indian companies, start-ups, MSMEs and private-sector organisations.
• The primary objective of SHIELD is to test the vulnerability of electronic systems when exposed to High-Power Microwave (HPM) radiation.
• The system will enable controlled testing to determine whether exposure to HPM energy causes temporary disruption, degraded performance or permanent damage to electronic equipment.
• SHIELD is intended as an evaluation and testing platform, rather than an immediately deployable anti-drone weapon.
• The platform can test critical electronics such as communication equipment, sensors, control systems and other electronic components, including those used in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS).
• The SHIELD platform is designed to generate a peak far-field strength of at least 3 kilovolts per metre (3 kV/m).

National Aluminium Company Limited Signs Technology Licensing Agreement with United Arab Emirates’s Emirates Global Aluminium to Expand Angul Aluminium Smelter Using DX+ Ultra Technology

• National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) under Ministry of Mines (MoM) signed a technology licensing agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE’s) Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to expand its aluminium smelter using EGA’s DX+ Ultra technology at Angul, Odisha.
• The agreement was formally signed in Dubai, UAE by Biju K, Chief General Manager (Projects) at NALCO, and Abdalla Zarouni, Acting Executive Vice President.
• The project aims to enhance efficiency, competitiveness, and sustainability in aluminium production while meeting India’s rising industrial demand.
• DX+ Ultra, developed by EGA, is a high-amperage aluminium smelting technology that enhances productivity and energy efficiency, with EGA also providing licensing, engineering designs, technical expertise, and implementation support across all project phases.
• The expansion will add about 5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO), increasing total production capacity to approximately 1 MTPA.

• GalaxEye, a Bengaluru, Karnataka-based Indian space-tech startup, secured a United States (US) patent for the core technology behind its OptoSAR (Optical Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging system, becoming the first Indian startup to receive a US patent for satellite imaging technology.
• The US patent covers the architecture and system developed by GalaxEye to synchronise optical and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors for coordinated satellite imaging.
• The patented technology enables optical and radar sensors to capture precisely aligned images of the same location at the same time, addressing the spatial and temporal differences in separately collected optical and radar images.
• The OptoSAR technology has applications in national security, agriculture, infrastructure, insurance, maritime intelligence, and disaster management, supporting the growing demand for satellite-based Earth-observation information.
• The global commercial satellite imaging market was valued at USD 6.55 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 20.15 billion by 2033, according to SkyQuest Technology.

• Cell Broadcast System (CBS) is an indigenous technology developed by the Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DOT) under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
• CBS enables near real-time, geo-targeted emergency alerts that can reach millions of people within seconds, allowing authorities to send warnings to specific cell towers, clusters, or larger geographic areas during emergencies.
• Cell Broadcast Service (CBS) is a telecom technology used to send emergency alerts simultaneously to all mobile phones within a specific geographical area.
• The service is operated by State Disaster Management Agencies (SDMAs) using a platform developed by C-DOT for sending emergency weather and natural disaster alerts.
• CBS can send location-specific alerts related to extreme weather events, natural disasters, and public safety emergencies.
• The service works across all telecom operators and mobile network technologies and can disseminate alerts without causing network congestion.
• CBS does not require users’ phone numbers, enabling rapid mass dissemination of emergency warnings to people present in a targeted geographical area.

New Lichen Species Buellia maharajensis Discovered in Kerala

• Researchers from Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI) and CSIR–National Botanical Research Institute (CSIR-NBRI), Lucknow discovered a new lichen species named Buellia maharajensis in Mathikettan Shola National Park, Idukki district, Kerala.
• The newly discovered Buellia maharajensis is a saxicolous lichen, meaning it grows directly on rock surfaces, and belongs to the lichen family Caliciaceae.
• The species was recorded at an altitude of approximately 1,351 metres in Mathikettan Shola National Park.
• The discovery was made by a five-member research team during a lichen diversity survey in the national park.
• The findings were published in the international botanical journal Taiwania, highlighting the rich and cryptic biodiversity of the Western Ghats.
• The newly discovered species was named Buellia maharajensis in honour of Maharaja’s College on the occasion of its 150th anniversary.
• A broader survey of Mathikettan Shola National Park documented around 250 lichen species, including approximately 60 species recorded for the first time in Kerala and 15 new records for India.
• The research team had previously discovered three other new lichen species in Mathikettan Shola National Park, making Buellia maharajensis the fourth lichen variety discovered by the team in the park.
• Lichens are composite organisms formed through a symbiotic association between a fungus and a photosynthetic partner, usually an alga or cyanobacterium.
• Lichens can grow on rocks, tree bark, soil and other surfaces, while saxicolous lichens specifically grow on rock surfaces.
• Mathikettan Shola National Park is located near Santhanpara in Idukki district, Kerala, within the Western Ghats, and contains high-altitude shola forest ecosystems.
• The national park covers an area of approximately 82 square kilometres and plays an important role in regional ecological conservation.
• Mathikettan Shola National Park was officially notified as a National Park by the Government of Kerala on 21 November 2003.
• The protected area is governed under India’s national park framework, with protected areas regulated under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
• The discovery highlights the ecological importance of Mathikettan Shola National Park and the role of the Western Ghats in conserving lesser-known and cryptic biodiversity.

Scientists Discover New “Devil Flower” Species in Thailand

• Thismia daemona is a new flowering plant species described by a team of botanists in the journal PhytoKeys.
• The species was discovered during a 2025 field survey in Thong Pha Phum National Park, located in western Thailand.
• Thismia daemona was nicknamed the “devil flower” because of its dark, horned appearance.
• The plant belongs to the genus Thismia, commonly known as “fairy lanterns” or “torch lilies”, which consists of small flowering plants that are often difficult to detect because they briefly emerge above the forest floor.
• The discovery increased the number of Thismia species recorded in Thailand to 16.
• Thismia daemona has been classified under the section Geomitra, a taxonomic group previously known from Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo.
• The discovery of T. daemona extends the known northern range of the Geomitra section.
• Thismia daemona is mycoheterotrophic, meaning it lacks chlorophyll and cannot perform photosynthesis.
• The plant does not have leaves or branches and obtains nutrients through underground fungal networks connected to its roots.
• Mycoheterotrophic plants are fully or partially dependent on fungi for carbon and mineral nutrients.
• Mycoheterotrophic adaptations occur in several plant families, including Burmanniaceae, Orchidaceae and Gentianaceae.
• The species was recorded at an elevation of approximately 950–970 metres in a seasonal montane forest.
• Its habitat is drier and at a higher elevation than the humid lowland rainforests where many other Thismia species are found.
• The known global population of Thismia daemona is fewer than 50 individual plants, resulting in its provisional classification as Critically Endangered.
• Thismia species are generally small, short-lived and hidden beneath leaf litter for much of their life cycle, making them difficult to detect.

Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute Develops Mobile App to Measure Fish Length and Width Without Physical Handling

• ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) developed a smartphone application named MatsyaMetri that can measure the length and width of fish without physically handling them.
• MatsyaMetri was developed under a project focused on the automated measurement of aquatic resources and generation of standardised length-frequency data used in fisheries stock assessment.
• The application uses intelligent, image-based technology to estimate the dimensions of fish, automatically records the measurements, and generates length-frequency datasets useful for population analysis, stock assessment, and resource monitoring.
• MatsyaMetri is designed for fisheries scientists, researchers, and field survey teams to facilitate rapid and systematic collection of biological data for fisheries assessment and management.
• The application was developed by Eldho Varghese, Senior Scientist and ICAR-National Fellow at CMFRI.
• The application allows multiple individuals of the same fish species or aquatic resource to be measured during a single sampling session.
• After measurements are completed, MatsyaMetri automatically generates length-frequency distributions using appropriate class intervals, supporting scientific fisheries analysis.
• The recorded measurements and corresponding photographs can be saved along with the sampling session and exported as a CSV file for further scientific analysis.
• MatsyaMetri is designed for ARCore-supported Android devices, allowing users to use their smartphone camera for fish measurement and biological data collection.
• To use the application, users can register and log in, create a sampling session, point the smartphone camera at a flat surface, and place the fish within the camera view; the application then detects the surface and provides an on-screen measuring guide to estimate the length and width of the fish.

Hong Kong’s First Post-Colonial Leader Tung Chee-hwa Passed away at 89

• Tung Chee-hwa, Hong Kong’s first post-colonial leader, passed away at the age of 89 in Hong Kong, Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of China.
• He was born on 29 May 1937 in Shanghai, China.
• Tung Chee-hwa worked at General Electric (GE) in the United States before joining his family business in 1969.
• In 1985, he joined a committee involved in drafting the Basic Law, Hong Kong’s mini-constitution, which has governed Hong Kong since 1997.
• After the end of British rule in 1997, he was selected by the Chinese government as Hong Kong’s first leader and served until 2005.
• During his leadership, Hong Kong faced major challenges including the 1997 Asian financial crisis, bird flu outbreaks, and the 2003 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) epidemic.
• Tung Chee-hwa served as Vice-Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from 12 March 2005 to 10 March 2023.
• The CPPCC is a key political advisory body in the political system of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

World Duchenne Awareness Day 2026 Observed on September 7

• World Duchenne Awareness Day is observed annually on September 7 to raise awareness about Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy and Becker Muscular Dystrophy, genetic disorders that primarily affect muscles.
• The 2026 theme was “Access Changes Lives”.
• Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a rare, progressive disorder caused by a fault in the gene responsible for producing dystrophin, a protein that protects muscles from damage.
• It is caused by a mutation on the X chromosome, which is why males are predominantly affected.
• The disease causes muscles to become progressively weaker. Walking difficulties are followed by problems with other motor functions and, in advanced stages, can affect breathing and heart function.
• As dystrophin also has a role in the brain, people with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy may experience learning and behavioural difficulties.
• In most countries, the average age of diagnosis is above 4 years, with a diagnostic delay of around 2.5 years. However, parents may notice symptoms when children are much younger.
• Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is named after Dr Duchenne de Boulogne, who was among the first to describe the disease in detail during the 1860s.

World Suicide Prevention Day 2026 Observed on September 10

• World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10 to raise global awareness about suicide prevention and promote efforts to prevent suicides.
• World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, in conjunction with the World Health Organization.
• The day aims to bring global attention to suicide prevention, reduce the stigma associated with suicide, and encourage individuals, communities, governments and organisations to take action.
• The 2026 theme continues the triennial theme for 2024–2026, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”.
• The 2026 campaign encourages a shift from silence and stigma towards openness, understanding, empathy and support, while promoting suicide prevention and mental health as public-policy priorities.
• The International Association for Suicide Prevention was established in 1960 and is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to suicide prevention.
• The World Health Organization states that suicide remains a major public health challenge, with more than 720,000 people dying by suicide every year worldwide.
• The first World Suicide Report, titled “Preventing Suicide: A Global Imperative,” was released by the World Health Organization in 2014. It highlighted suicide prevention as a global public health priority.
