Finance Ministry Secures USD 1 Billion International Finance Corporation Funding to Boost Long-Term Credit for Small Businesses

• The Ministry of Finance (MoF) secured USD 1 billion in funding from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) to help banks and Financial Institutions (FIs) in India provide more long-term credit to small businesses.
• The new funding complements the existing credit support available to the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector through the Government of India’s Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS).
• Of the total USD 1 billion facility, USD 500 million has already been provided by IFC from its own resources to the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).
• The remaining USD 500 million will be raised through SIDBI’s lender syndicate.
• Using the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s special swap window, the credit facility has been swapped into Indian Rupees (INR).
• The funding will focus on MSMEs across the manufacturing and services value chain, including automobiles and auto-components, engineering goods, electronics, textiles, food processing, and other employment-intensive sectors.
• A major portion of the funding will be directly on-lent by SIDBI to MSMEs for a maximum period of 7 years, with a suitable moratorium.
• The SIDBI lending will primarily support machinery acquisition, business modernisation, and business expansion by MSMEs.
• SIDBI has also been authorised to use the funds to provide financing to Financial Institutions, particularly Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs).

Reserve Bank of India Confers Scheduled Bank Status on Coastal Local Area Bank

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) formally included Coastal Local Area Bank Limited, headquartered in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh (AP), in the Second Schedule of the RBI Act, 1934, granting it Scheduled Bank status.
• Coastal Local Area Bank (Coastal Bank) is recognised as India’s first Local Area Bank (LAB).
• Following its inclusion in the Second Schedule, Coastal Bank became the only scheduled bank headquartered in Andhra Pradesh.
• The RBI issued the notification regarding Coastal Bank’s scheduled status on 4 September 2026.
• Despite obtaining Scheduled Bank status, Coastal Local Area Bank will continue to remain classified as a Local Area Bank (LAB).
• Scheduled Bank status gives Coastal Bank access to RBI liquidity facilities and money market operations, strengthening its institutional position and supporting its future expansion.
• With its new status, the bank plans to reach new customer segments and institutional depositors, increase Current Account and Savings Account (CASA) deposits, and reduce its cost of deposits.
• The bank intends to pass the benefits of lower deposit costs on to its lending customers.
• Coastal Bank currently operates through 57 branches across 12 districts.
• The bank has received RBI approval to expand operations to Vizianagaram and Prakasam districts in Andhra Pradesh and Khammam district in Telangana.
• The bank has also received approval to open 13 additional branches, supporting its regional expansion strategy.
• Local Area Banks (LABs) are designed to provide banking services within a limited geographical area, supporting regional economic development and financial inclusion.

Financial Intelligence Unit-India Issues Non-Compliance Notices to 15 Virtual Digital Asset Service Providers Under Prevention of Money Laundering Act

• The Director, Financial Intelligence Unit-India (FIU-IND) issued notices for non-compliance to 15 Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers (VDA SPs) under Section 13 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002 (PMLA).
• The 15 VDA SPs named in the notices are Weex, Blofin, Rezorex, Bitunix, DigiFinex, Toobit, XT.com, Latoken, WOO X, Pionex, ChangeNow, SimpleSwap, Fixedfloat, WhiteBIT, and Guardarian.
• The corresponding entities are Weex International Exchange LTD, BLF Global Limited, RezorEx, Bitunix LLC, DigiFinex Ltd, Hopeful Technology Co. Ltd., Fibtc Ltd/XT TECHNICAL PTE. LTD., LAtrade Ltd, Wootech Limited, Marketa Trading Inc., CHN Group LLC, SimpleSwap LTD, FFGX Group LLC, UAB Clear White Technologies, and FinSeven CZ, respectively.
• The Director, FIU-IND, acting as the nodal officer under Section 79(3)(b) of the Information Technology Act, 2000, read with Rule 3(1)(d) of the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2025, also issued notices to take down applications/URLs providing public access to these entities’ services.
• The action was taken because the concerned VDA SPs were found to be operating illegally in India without complying with the relevant provisions of the PMLA.
• Virtual Digital Assets Service Providers (VDA SPs) were brought under India’s Anti-Money Laundering/Counter Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) framework under the PMLA in March 2023.
• VDA SPs operating in India, whether offshore or onshore, must register with FIU-IND as Reporting Entities if they undertake specified VDA-related activities.
• Covered activities include exchange between virtual digital assets and fiat currencies, transfer of virtual digital assets, safekeeping or administration of virtual digital assets, and services involving instruments that enable control over virtual digital assets.
• The compliance requirements include registration with FIU-IND, reporting obligations, record-keeping, and other obligations prescribed under the PMLA and its Rules.
• The VDA regulatory obligations are activity-based and do not depend on whether the service provider has a physical presence in India.
• Therefore, both offshore and onshore VDA SPs providing covered services to the Indian market are required to comply with the applicable AML/CFT and PMLA framework.
• FIU-IND’s action highlights the Government’s efforts to strengthen financial intelligence, anti-money laundering compliance, and monitoring of virtual digital asset activities in India.
• The Government has also cautioned the public that crypto products and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) are unregulated and can be highly risky.
• There may be no regulatory recourse for losses arising from transactions involving such crypto products and NFTs, making public awareness and caution important.

Asian Development Bank Signs First Transaction Advisory Services Mandate in India with Madhya Pradesh Government

• The Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed its first Transaction Advisory Services (TAS) mandate in India with the Government of Madhya Pradesh (MP) to facilitate the development of renewable energy Public-Private Partnership (PPP)
• The initiative aims to attract private investment of up to USD 1 billion in Madhya Pradesh’s renewable energy sector.
• The agreement was signed in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, by Mio Oka, Country Director for India, ADB, in the presence of Mohan Yadav, Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh.
• Under the TAS agreement, ADB will act as a Transaction Advisor for PPP-based renewable energy projects in Madhya Pradesh.
• ADB will provide support for project preparation, project structuring, procurement frameworks, bankable tender development, and mobilisation of private investment.
• The initiative aims to strengthen renewable energy infrastructure, increase private-sector participation, enhance energy security, and improve grid stability in Madhya Pradesh.
• The agreement also seeks to develop scalable clean-energy investment models that can support future renewable energy projects.
• The initial project pipeline includes a solar power generation facility integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at Shajapur, Madhya Pradesh.

• The historic Shekhawati Havelis of Rajasthan have been included in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Tentative List, marking an important step towards possible inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
• The proposal covers heritage properties and historic havelis across 14 towns in the Shekhawati region: Alsisar, Bissau, Chirawa, Churu, Dundlod, Fatehpur, Jhunjhunu, Khetri, Laxmangarh, Mandawa, Mahansar, Nawalgarh, Ramgarh and Sikar.

• Rajasthan Deputy Chief Minister Diya Kumari described the inclusion as a significant milestone for securing international recognition for the region’s architectural, cultural and fresco heritage.
• Shekhawati, located in northeastern Rajasthan, is renowned for its elaborately painted havelis, largely constructed by merchant families.
• The havelis are characterised by ornate façades, courtyards, gateways and richly decorated interiors with detailed frescoes.
• The frescoes depict various aspects of social and cultural history, including religious and mythological themes, portraits, everyday life, flora, fauna and traditional motifs.

BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir Inaugurated in Paris, France

• BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Mandir in Bussy-Saint-Georges, Seine-et-Marne, France, was inaugurated.
• The temple is France’s first traditionally designed stone Hindu temple and the largest traditionally designed stone Hindu temple in mainland Europe.
• The mandir belongs to the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha, a Hindu socio-spiritual organisation belonging to the Swaminarayan tradition.
• The temple was formally consecrated by Mahant Swami Maharaj, the spiritual leader of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha.

Four More Indian Heritage Sites Added to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation Tentative List, Taking Total to 73

• The Permanent Delegation of India to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) announced the inclusion of 4 new Indian cultural heritage sites in the Tentative List of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention (WHC).
• The 4 newly added sites are Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble (Assam), Colonial Penal Settlement (Andaman Islands), Nicobarese Cultural Continuity (Central Group of Nicobar Islands), and Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati (Rajasthan).
• All four newly included sites belong to the Cultural category of the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
• With these additions, the total number of Indian sites on the UNESCO Tentative List increased to 73.
• The 73 Indian tentative-list sites comprise 53 Cultural, 3 Mixed, and 17 Natural sites.
• The Rangpur-Sivasagar Historic Ensemble is a pre-modern urban and cultural landscape located in Sivasagar district, Assam, approximately 360 km northeast of Guwahati.
• The Colonial Penal Settlement in the Andaman Islands was established following the 1857 uprisings and comprises 4 historically connected sites: Chatham Island, Viper Island, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (NSCB) Island, and Cellular Jail.
• Nicobarese Cultural Continuity is located in Nicobar district and is also associated with the Nancowry Group of Islands.
• The Nancowry Group of Islands under the Nicobarese Cultural Continuity site comprises 7 islands: Trinket, Katchal, Chowra, Teressa, Kamorta, Nancowrie, and Bompoka.
• The Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati are located in the semi-arid Shekhawati region of northern Rajasthan.
• The Painted Haveli Towns of Shekhawati span 3 districts of Rajasthan: Sikar, Jhunjhunu, and Churu.

7th India-Japan Joint Working Group Meeting on Forestry Held in Bengaluru

• The 7th Meeting of the India-Japan Joint Working Group (JWG) on cooperation in the forestry sector was held in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on 8 September 2026.
• The Indian delegation was led by Shri Ramesh Kumar Pandey, Additional Director General (Forests), Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India.
• The Japanese delegation was led by Shimizu Kotaro, Deputy Director General, Forestry Agency, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Government of Japan.
• India and Japan conduct forestry cooperation through the Joint Working Group mechanism established under the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) signed in 2015.
• The meeting focused on three key areas of cooperation: Tree Outside Forests (TOFs), Forest Genetics, and Forest Stack.
• Under Tree Outside Forests (TOFs), both sides exchanged experiences on the assessment, management and genetic improvement of tree resources outside forests. Tree Outside Forests (TOFs) refers to trees growing on farms, field boundaries, homesteads, roadsides and other non-forest lands.
• Under Forest Genetics, discussions focused on genetic resource conservation, tree breeding, improved planting material and germplasm conservation.
• Under Forest Stack, India and Japan exchanged views on forest inventory, forest stock assessment, geospatial technologies and forest monitoring technologies.
• Both countries endorsed the Roadmap for 2027–2031 under the 2015 Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC), reaffirming their commitment to deepen cooperation in forestry, biodiversity conservation, research and capacity building.
• The meeting concluded with the signing of the Minutes of the 7th Joint Working Group (JWG).
• As part of the programme, both delegations visited the Institute of Wood Science and Technology (IWST), Bengaluru, and interacted with officials of the Karnataka Forest Department.
• On 9 September 2026, the delegations were scheduled to visit sandalwood agro-forestry farms, a sandalwood depot and a processing facility in Mysuru.
• On 10 September 2026, the delegations were scheduled to visit Nagarhole Tiger Reserve to exchange experiences on wildlife conservation practices.
• The field visits provided opportunities to exchange knowledge on sandalwood cultivation in private farms and wildlife conservation.

India Joins Global 6G Initiative with United States of America and 24 Nations to Advance Secure Next-Generation Networks

• India, through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoC&I), joined the global 6G initiative called “Call to Action for 6G Leadership and Security” along with the United States of America (USA) and 24 other countries.

Defence Acquisition Council Approves Defence Acquisition Proposals Worth ₹1.10 Lakh Crore

• The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved capital acquisition proposals worth approximately ₹1.10 lakh crore to strengthen the combat capabilities of the Indian Army (IA), Indian Navy (IN) and Indian Air Force (IAF).
• The approvals were granted under the Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) stage, which represents the in-principle administrative approval for defence acquisition proposals.
• The acquisitions aim to enhance combat readiness, operational capabilities and military preparedness while promoting self-reliance and defence indigenisation.
• Approximately 98% of the total value of the approved procurements is planned to be sourced from Indian industry, providing a major boost to Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence.
• For the Indian Army, the approved procurements include Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) Reconnaissance Vehicles, High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs), Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs), Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers (MMLs), Trawl Tanks and the Sarvatra Bridge System.
• The CBRN Reconnaissance Vehicles will be capable of detecting, identifying, monitoring and marking areas contaminated by chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents.
• The High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) will enhance operational mobility and logistics support, particularly in challenging terrains.
• The Self-Propelled Mechanical Mine Layers (MMLs) will provide fast and responsive mine-laying capabilities during military operations.
• The Advanced Light Helicopters (ALHs) will enable the Indian Army and Indian Air Force to undertake complex missions across diverse terrains and operational situations.
• The Trawl Tanks and Sarvatra Bridge System will provide composite crossing capabilities to fighting formations during operations in varied terrains.
• For the Indian Navy, the DAC approved the procurement of Arudhra Radars and the design, development and subsequent procurement of Marine Gas Turbines (MGTs).
• The Arudhra Radars will replace existing Air Route Surveillance Radars at various Naval Air Stations.
• The indigenous development of Marine Gas Turbines (MGTs), which are crucial for warship propulsion, is expected to reduce dependence on foreign vendors.

Adani Defence Enters 5-Year Ammunition Supply Agreement for AK-203 Rifle Programme

• Adani Defence & Aerospace and Indo-Russian Rifles Private Limited (IRRPL) signed a five-year agreement for the supply of indigenously manufactured 62×39 mm small-calibre ammunition for India’s AK-203 assault rifle programme.
• The agreement will provide a domestic source of ammunition, ensure continuity of supply, and strengthen India’s indigenous small-arms ecosystem.
• The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed the original contract with IRRPL on 6 December 2021 for 6,01,427 AK-203 rifles for the Indian Armed Forces.
• The 7.62×39 mm ammunition will be manufactured at Adani Defence’s ammunition facility in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, while the AK-203 rifles are manufactured by IRRPL at its Korwa facility in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.
• The AK-203 programme involves the production of over 6 lakh AK-203 assault rifles in India under the contract signed with IRRPL in December 2021.
• IRRPL recently manufactured and test-fired the first 100% indigenous AK-203, named ‘Sher’, using Indian components and input materials.
• The AK-203 is a 62×39 mm gas-operated assault rifle capable of firing approximately 700 rounds per minute.
• The AK-203 has an effective range of up to 800 metres and is being inducted into the Indian military.

• The second edition of Exercise Veer Guardian is scheduled from 9 to 22 September 2026 at Air Force Station Jodhpur, Rajasthan.
• The exercise aims to enhance interoperability, operational coordination, operational synergy and tactical proficiency between the Indian and Japanese air forces.
• It also seeks to strengthen mutual understanding, trust and professional cooperation between the two air forces.

• The Zero-Emission Truck (ZET) Marketplace is an interactive digital business-engagement platform for India’s electric freight ecosystem.
• The ZET Marketplace connects e-truck manufacturers, Logistics Service Providers (LSPs), Charge Point Operators (CPOs), financiers, and technology companies on a common marketplace.

• Sudivya Kumar Sonu, Jharkhand’s Minister for Urban Development and Housing, Higher and Technical Education, passed away at the age of 56 in Giridih, Jharkhand.
• He was born on 26 July 1970 in Giridih, Bihar, which is in present-day Jharkhand.
• Sudivya Kumar Sonu was a prominent leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and served as a two-term Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Giridih.
• He was elected from the Giridih Assembly constituency in 2019 and retained the seat in 2024.
• He became the first JMM legislator from Giridih to be appointed a minister in more than two decades.
• As a Cabinet Minister in the Jharkhand Government, he played an important role in state governance and political negotiations.
• He handled several important portfolios, including Urban Development and Housing, Higher and Technical Education, and Tourism, Art, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs.
