Reserve Bank of India Imposes Monetary Penalties on Five Entities for Regulatory Violations

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) imposed monetary penalties on five entities, comprising three Credit Information Companies (CICs) and two Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), for non-compliance with various RBI regulatory directions.
• The penalties were imposed based on statutory inspections conducted with reference to the entities’ financial position as of 31 March 2025.
• TransUnion CIBIL received the highest penalty of ₹26.82 lakh for failing to credit compensation to eligible complainants within the prescribed period under RBI’s framework for delayed updation or rectification of credit information.
• CRIF High Mark Credit Information Services was fined ₹6.89 lakh for failing to credit compensation to eligible customers’ bank accounts within the stipulated timeline.
• Equifax Credit Information Services was penalised ₹1.19 lakh for the same violation relating to delayed compensation to eligible customers.
• Sammaan Finserve Limited was penalised ₹4.20 lakh for failing to report borrower credit information to the Central Repository of Information on Large Credits (CRILC), violating RBI directions concerning the early recognition of financial stress.
• Hinduja Leyland Finance was fined ₹6.20 lakh for two violations, namely failure to maintain a Board-approved policy for pricing microfinance loans and undertaking activities resembling “synthetic securitisation” in violation of RBI’s securitisation norms.
• The RBI penalties followed statutory inspections, show-cause notices, and consideration of the entities’ written replies, additional submissions and oral arguments during personal hearings.

Reserve Bank of India Releases Financial Stability Report 2026

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) released the Financial Stability Report (FSR) – June 2026, a half-yearly publication that presents the collective assessment of the Sub-Committee of the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC) on current and emerging risks to the stability of the Indian financial system.
• The Indian economy recorded strong growth of 7.7% in 2025–26, supported by robust private consumption and fixed investment.
• The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) revised its inflation projection for 2026–27 upward from 4.6% to 5.1%.
• India’s foreign exchange reserves stood at USD 672.6 billion as of 19 June 2026, providing a reserve cover of more than 10 months of merchandise imports.
• The USD 672.6 billion foreign exchange reserves covered 90.6% of India’s outstanding external debt, highlighting the country’s external-sector resilience.

Razorpay and IndusInd Bank Introduce Artificial Intelligence Account Manager ‘RAY’ on WhatsApp for Businesses

• Razorpay, India’s omnichannel payments platform for businesses, launched ‘RAY’, a conversational Artificial Intelligence (AI) Account Manager on WhatsApp, in partnership with IndusInd Bank Limited.
• RAY on WhatsApp enables businesses to manage payments, transactions, settlements, and customer support through a simple chat-based interface.
• Bajaj Finserv was among the first live users of the RAY platform.
• MSMEs can use RAY to manage payments, analyse transactions, generate payment links, issue refunds, and resolve queries through simple messages.
• RAY can execute actions directly without requiring dashboards, while also tracking payment health and providing alerts, insights, and recommendations.
• The platform was developed in partnership with IndusInd Bank and has already recorded more than 20,000 conversations, highlighting the growing adoption of AI-led, conversational, and real-time business support.

• The Goa Police received the President’s Colour after over eight decades of distinguished service. The honour recognises police forces for their glorious history, professional excellence, courage, discipline and dedication.
• Since the formation of Goa, the Goa Police has been responsible for maintaining a safe city, safe community and secure maritime border, making a significant contribution to national security.
• The Goa Police is also responsible for safeguarding Goa’s extensive maritime boundary and has contributed to the safety and security of tourists and the state’s economy.

• The AI-based 1930 service can facilitate complaint registration in Konkani, Marathi and Hindi, besides enabling complaints in other Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution and routing them to the appropriate authorities.
• The multilingual facility is particularly significant for tourists visiting Goa from different parts of India.
• Emergency Response Service: Goa Police has reduced the 112 emergency response time from 18 minutes to 8 minutes.
• Nearly 20,000 calls have received prompt assistance, and the response time is targeted to be reduced to less than 6 minutes through additional vehicles and two-wheelers.
• The Tourist Police Wing of Goa was highlighted as a potential model for other tourism-oriented states.
• Three new Nyaya Sanhitas have been implemented to transform the criminal justice system, incorporating technology, sensitivity, prioritisation and speedy justice.
• The criminal justice system is being technologically integrated by connecting jails, Forensic Science Laboratories (FSLs), courts, advocates, police stations and hospitals.
• Goa Police remained ranked first in the country for several months in the implementation of the new criminal laws and currently ranks second nationally with 93.38% progress.

• The objective of the roadmap is to make every village and city in India free from narcotics, with participation from Central Government departments and State Governments.

Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026 – Lucknow Ranks First Among Cities with Population Above 10 Lakh

• Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2026 was released under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) to assess the air-quality management and pollution-control efforts of cities across India.
• Lucknow topped the category of cities with a population of above 10 lakhs, scoring 198 out of 200 points, followed by Indore (197) and Jabalpur (195).
• Lucknow improved significantly from 15th position in the previous assessment to 1st position in 2026.

• The survey covered 130 cities and highlighted significant improvement in Particulate Matter (PM10) levels compared with the 2017–18 baseline.
• 108 out of 130 cities showed improvement in PM10 levels.
• 72 cities achieved a more than 20% reduction in PM10 concentration, while 26 cities recorded a more than 40% reduction.
• 14 cities achieved the National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for PM10.
• Lucknow reduced its annual PM10 concentration from around 250 µg/m³ in 2017–18 to 137 µg/m³.
• Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan is an annual assessment conducted under NCAP to evaluate city-level efforts for improving air quality and controlling pollution. It assesses measures related to vehicular emissions, road dust, construction and demolition activities, waste burning and industrial pollution.
• The survey promotes healthy competition among cities, recognises successful clean-air practices and encourages their replication by other cities.
• Swachh Vayu Diwas 2026 was organised by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), coinciding with the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies.
• Justice Prakash Shrivastava, Chairperson of the National Green Tribunal (NGT), was the Chief Guest. • The best-performing cities and wards under NCAP were awarded as part of the 5th Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan.
• The Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan Framework was released in 2022–23. It assesses road dust, Solid Waste Management (SWM), vehicular emissions, industrial pollution, Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste management, emissions from Diesel Generator (DG) sets and commercial establishments, and Information, Education and Communication (IEC) activities.
• The assessment covers 130 cities in three population groups: below 3 lakh, 3–10 lakh and above 10 lakh. The process involves self-assessment by cities, approval by State-level Monitoring Committees, evaluation by CPCB, field verification by Independent Committees and selection of 10 best-performing cities.
• The National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) was launched in January 2019 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) to improve air quality through city-specific action plans, monitoring, enforcement and public participation.
• NCAP focuses particularly on PM10 and PM2.5 and aims to reduce particulate pollution across cities.
• The revised NCAP framework targets up to 40% reduction in PM10 concentration or achievement of NAAQS by 2025–26, compared with the 2017–18 baseline.
• NCAP covers 130 cities across 24 States/Union Territories and provides for City Action Plans (CAPs) based on local pollution sources and environmental conditions.
• A performance-linked grant of ₹16,425 crore has been provided to the 130 NCAP cities as critical gap funding for implementing air-pollution mitigation measures.
• The PRANA portal tracks various air-quality management parameters for the 130 NCAP cities.

• The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas-led energy innovation platform MC²+ launched MC²+ Ignite, a sector-specific accelerator programme for deep-tech startups in the energy sector.
• The programme aims to help startups transition from technology development and laboratory validation to industrial pilots and commercial deployment.
• The inaugural cohort will include around 30 startups, with selected startups eligible for up to ₹2 crore each in milestone-linked convertible funding.
• The programme will provide startups with access to Research and Development infrastructure, technical expertise, industry mentors, pilot opportunities and potential commercial pathways through participating energy companies.

Key Highlights

• MC²+ Ignite seeks to address major challenges faced by deep-tech startups, including limited access to industrial assets, pilot sites, customers and growth capital, which are essential for moving from proof-of-concept to commercial deployment.
• The programme will follow a decentralised acceleration and innovation model, with a central hub in Delhi and innovation nodes at the Research and Development centres of participating Indian oil and gas companies.
• MC²+ has partnered with Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Platforms and Venture Center, Pune to provide access to laboratories, infrastructure and mentoring.

Overview of Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever’s Visit to India from September 2–4, 2026

• Bart De Wever, Prime Minister (PM) of Belgium, undertook a three-day official state visit to India from 2–4 September 2026 at the invitation of PM Narendra Modi, with the objective of strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, technology and connectivity.
• This was Bart De Wever’s first official visit to India since he assumed office as Prime Minister of Belgium in February 2025.
• PM Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Belgian PM Bart De Wever at Hyderabad House, New Delhi, focusing on trade, investment, clean energy, critical minerals, technology and connectivity.
• Union Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth and Belgian Defence Minister Theo Francken participated in the India-Belgium Defence CEOs Roundtable and Business-to-Business (B2B) meeting in New Delhi.
• The Defence CEOs Roundtable resulted in the exchange of several Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at combining Belgian technological expertise with India’s industrial capabilities and manufacturing scale.
• On 4 September 2026, PM Bart De Wever visited Mumbai, Maharashtra, and participated in the India-Belgium High-Level Dialogue on the India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (India-EU FTA), with discussions covering trade, ports, logistics and investment.
• The visit resulted in 10 key announcements, primarily focused on the 3Ts — Trade, Technology and Talent.

United Nations General Assembly Declares November 27 as International Day for the Elimination of Child Marriage

• India was among the 70 countries that co-sponsored a United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) resolution declaring 27 November every year as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage.
• The resolution, A/RES/80/309, was led by Sierra Leone and adopted without a vote during the 80th Session of the UNGA in New York, USA, with the support of all 193 UN Member States.
• The resolution aims to establish 27 November as a global day to raise awareness about the harmful consequences of child, early and forced marriage worldwide.
• The initiative was championed by Fatima Maada Bio, First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD).
• Bhuwan Ribhu, founder of Just Rights for Children (JRC), a global child-rights network working to end child exploitation, also supported the initiative.
• The resolution calls upon governments to take decisive action through comprehensive laws, budgeted national action plans and policies, as well as responsible and accountable institutions.
• UN Member States are required to develop and implement holistic, multisectoral national strategies and action plans to eliminate child, early and forced marriage.
• The first observance of the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage will take place on 27 November 2026.
• The United Nations has officially added 27 November to its list of international observances, making it an important global initiative for protecting children’s rights.

72nd National Film Awards 2026 – Ceremony to Be Held in Gujarat for the First Time

• The 72nd National Film Awards ceremony will be held on 22 September 2026 at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, marking the first time in several decades that the ceremony will be held outside New Delhi.
• President Droupadi Murmu will present the awards to the winners.

• The National Film Awards were instituted in 1954, and Delhi has hosted most editions of the ceremony.
• The awards have previously been held outside the national capital. The 17th and 18th National Film Awards were held in Madras (now Chennai) in 1970 and 1971, respectively.

• ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research – Indian Agricultural Research Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding to undertake advanced research on the sustainable utilisation of iron ore tailings in agriculture.
• The collaboration aims to promote circular economy, resource conservation and sustainable agriculture by exploring the beneficial use of iron ore tailings generated during iron ore beneficiation.
• Preliminary studies initiated in 2024 found that iron ore tailings contain naturally occurring minerals and nutrients such as silica, iron oxides, alumina, calcium and magnesium, which may contribute to soil health and crop production.

Ministry of Law and Justice Appoints 8 High Court Judges as Chief Justices

• The Ministry of Law and Justice (MoL&J) notified the appointment of 8 Judges of various High Courts as Chief Justices (CJs) of different High Courts across India on 5 September 2026.
• The appointments were approved by President Droupadi Murmu after consultation with Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and the Supreme Court Collegium.
• The Supreme Court Collegium recommends the names of judges for appointment as Chief Justices, followed by Presidential approval and formal notification by the Ministry of Law and Justice.
• The constitutional provision governing the appointment of High Court judges and Chief Justices is Article 217 of the Constitution of India.
• Under Article 217, the President of India appoints High Court judges after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the Governor of the concerned State, and, for a judge other than the Chief Justice, the Chief Justice of the concerned High Court.

• Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra was elevated as the full-time Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after earlier administrative delays.

• Vinaya Prakash Singh, a 1988-batch Indian Postal Service officer, has been re-elected as Secretary-General of the Asian-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) for a second consecutive four-year term.
• He was elected unopposed by acclamation at the 14th APPU Congress held in Bangkok on 4 September 2026.
• His second term will begin in January 2027 and continue until December 2030.
• His re-election reflects the confidence and consensus of postal administrations across the Asia-Pacific region and recognises India’s contribution to international postal cooperation.
• The Asian-Pacific Postal Union (APPU) is an intergovernmental organisation headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand, comprising 32 member countries.
• The APPU functions as a Regional Union of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which is a United Nations specialised agency for the postal sector.

Dinesh Sharma Appointed Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

• President Droupadi Murmu appointed Dinesh Sharma, a BJP Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh, as the Lieutenant Governor (Lt Gov) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (A&N) on 5 September 2026.
• The appointment was announced through a communiqué issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi, and will take effect from the date Dr. Dinesh Sharma assumes charge.
• Dinesh Sharma will succeed Admiral (Retd.) Devendra Kumar Joshi, former Chief of Naval Staff (CNS), who had served as the Lt Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands since 8 October 2017.
• Dinesh Sharma, aged 62, had earlier served as the Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh before becoming a Rajya Sabha MP.
• He has served as a Rajya Sabha MP from Uttar Pradesh since 2023, and his Rajya Sabha term was scheduled to end on 25 November 2026.
• Dinesh Sharma was also a member of the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons of the Rajya Sabha.

• The Indian Air Force (IAF) Sarang Helicopter Display Team has reached Egypt to participate in the 2nd edition of the El Alamein International Airshow, scheduled from 8 to 10 September 2026 at El Alamein International Airport.
• The Sarang Helicopter Display Team is the world’s only five-helicopter display team, known for demonstrating precision, professionalism, discipline and advanced flying skills through meticulously choreographed aerial formations.
• The Sarang team flies the indigenously designed and manufactured Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, showcasing the capabilities of India’s indigenous aerospace industry and the exceptional skills of IAF pilots.
• The team is renowned for demanding formation manoeuvres, close-proximity flying and synchronised aerial sequences, highlighting the versatility and agility of the ALH Dhruv.
• During the airshow, Sarang will perform its famous “Dolphin Leap” manoeuvre and introduce a new manoeuvre called the “Spot Stall Turn”.
• The participation of the Sarang team marks another significant milestone in the international engagements of the IAF and reflects the growing defence and diplomatic ties between India and Egypt.

Munitions India and Drogo Aerospace Partner to Develop Indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and Loitering Munitions

• Munitions India Limited (MIL), a Defence Public Sector Undertaking (DPSU) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD), signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Drogo Aerospace Private Limited to collaborate on the design, development and integration of indigenous Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and loitering munition systems.
• The MIL–Drogo Aerospace MoU was signed in Pune, Maharashtra, by Yashwanth Bonthu, Founder and CEO of Drogo Aerospace, and Kumar Vaibhav Gaur, Executive Director of MIL.
• Under the partnership, Drogo Aerospace will be responsible for designing and manufacturing UAV platforms and payload hardware, while MIL will contribute expertise in munitions design, explosives, fuzing and warhead technologies.
• The two organisations will jointly work on UAV–munition integration, safety evaluation, field trials and quality certification.
• MIL manufactures ammunition, explosives, rockets and bombs for the Indian Armed Forces and other customers.
• A key focus of the collaboration is Drogo Aerospace’s Delta Wing Kamikaze UAV/loitering munition, which was successfully tested in Hyderabad, Telangana.
• The Delta Wing Kamikaze UAV is designed for one-way precision strikes and has a proposed range of around 1,000 km with a 20–30 kg warhead capacity.
• A UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) operates without an onboard pilot and can be used for surveillance, reconnaissance and strike missions.
• A loitering munition is an unmanned weapon system that can remain airborne for a period before identifying and striking a target.

Apollyon Dynamics’ Ahuti Mk II Sets Record as India’s Fastest Multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

• Apollyon Dynamics, a Hyderabad, Telangana-based defence startup, set a national record after its electric interceptor drone Ahuti Mk II achieved a certified top speed of 498 km/h, making it India’s fastest multirotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).
• Ahuti Mk II entered the India Book of Records on 1 September 2026 for developing India’s fastest multirotor UAV.
• The drone surpassed the previous Indian multirotor speed benchmark of approximately 325 km/h.
• The Ahuti Mk II was rebuilt from the 2025 Ahuti version, which had achieved around 300 km/h, delivering a nearly 66% increase in speed within one year.
• Ahuti Mk II is a high-speed interceptor drone designed to chase and neutralise hostile drones and loitering munitions, rather than being used primarily for surveillance or photography.
• The drone underwent nearly 10 design iterations involving its frame, propulsion system and motor configuration to achieve high-speed performance.
• The interceptor drone uses a 400-ampere burst current to support its high-speed operation.
• Ahuti Mk II has been tested at Indian Army ranges with support from defence authorities, and Apollyon Dynamics has also fielded some of its unmanned systems with Indian Army units.
• Apollyon Dynamics was founded by Jayant Khatri and Sourya Choudhary and was established in 2025.
• The startup was incubated at BITS Pilani Hyderabad Campus, and Jayant Khatri’s undergraduate work received support from BITS Pilani’s SOLVE programme, including a ₹2 lakh prototype grant.
• The technical team behind the record-setting UAV included high-speed drone pilot Aman Virani (Shady), along with Manas Vichare and Ishaan Suri.
• A multirotor UAV is an unmanned aerial vehicle that uses multiple rotors for lift and control; common configurations include quadcopters, hexacopters and octocopters.
• Multirotor UAVs are widely used for surveillance, mapping, photography and payload delivery, while Ahuti Mk II has been specifically developed for interception and counter-drone operations.
• Interceptor drones are designed to pursue and neutralise hostile UAVs and loitering munitions, which are also commonly called kamikaze drones in defence terminology.
• Apollyon Dynamics has announced an engineering roadmap that includes a high-capacity power cruise missile platform by 2030.

Defence Research and Development Organisation and University of Hyderabad Obtain Patent for Advanced Solid Rocket Propellant Fuel

• The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Advanced Centre of Research in High Energy Materials (ACRHEM) at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) secured an Indian patent for BAM-H24, a next-generation solid rocket propellant fuel.
• The Patent Office, Government of India, granted Patent No. 599900 on 20 August 2026.
• The patent application for BAM-H24 was filed on 21 December 2022.
• BAM-H24 was developed by Muddamarri Hanumantha Rao and Prof. Muralidharan Krishnamurthi of ACRHEM and the School of Chemistry, University of Hyderabad.
• BAM-H24 is a boron-, hydrogen-, and nitrogen-rich energetic compound designed for use as a solid rocket fuel, fuel additive, and burn-rate accelerator in propulsion systems.
• The compound has high chemical and thermal stability, low sensitivity to impact and friction, and is non-hygroscopic, enhancing its safety and handling characteristics.
• BAM-H24 also offers high specific impulse and reduced ignition delay, improving the efficiency of propulsion systems.
• The material is suitable for applications in solid rocket propulsion, missile systems, and space launch vehicles.
• The patent strengthens India’s indigenous defence and space capabilities by adding an advanced high-energy material for strategic applications.

Germany’s Isar Aerospace Successfully Launches ‘Spectrum Rocket’ into Space

• The German startup Isar Aerospace successfully launched its Spectrum rocket into orbit from Andøya Spaceport, Norway, under its second-flight mission named “Onward and Upward.”
• The Spectrum rocket crossed an altitude of 100 kilometres (km) in less than four minutes, becoming the first privately developed rocket to reach space from Europe.
• Spectrum is a two-stage orbital launch vehicle designed and largely manufactured in-house by Isar Aerospace for launching small and medium-sized satellites and satellite constellations.
• The Spectrum rocket is 28 metres tall, has a 2-metre diameter, uses 10 engines, and can carry payloads of up to 1,000 kilograms (kg) to Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
• The mission carried five CubeSats: CyBEEsat from the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin), Germany; TriSat-S from the University of Maribor, Slovenia; Platform 6 from EnduroSat, Bulgaria; FramSat-1 from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway; and SpaceTeamSat1 from TU Wien Space Team, Austria.
• The mission also carried the non-separable “Let It Go” experiment, developed by Dcubed.
• The payload selection was supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) Boost! Programme and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Microlauncher Competition.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras’ Bodhan AI Launches Four Multilingual AI Models for India’s Education Stack

• Bodhan AI, a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in AI for Education at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Chennai, Tamil Nadu, launched four foundational multilingual AI models as Digital Public Goods in partnership with AI4Bharat.
• The initiative aims to strengthen India’s education ecosystem through sovereign digital infrastructure and is part of the Bharat Education Artificial Intelligence (EduAI) Stack.
• The four AI models cover Speech Recognition, Text-to-Speech (TTS), Machine Translation (MT), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR).
• The Speech Recognition model supports 27 languages, while the OCR and Text-to-Speech models support 23 languages
• The Machine Translation model supports 22 languages, enabling multilingual access to educational content.
• The models are built using NVIDIA Nemotron and the NVIDIA Neural Module (NeMo)
• The Speech Recognition model uses Nemotron 3.5 Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) post-training to improve support for Indian dialects and accents.
• The models have been released as open-weight models with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) on sovereign infrastructure, supporting the development of digital public infrastructure for education.
• The initiative includes a Student Tutor Bot designed for Classes 6–12, providing multilingual and interactive learning support.

Reserve Bank of India Approves Life Insurance Corporation of India to Acquire Up to 9.99% Stake in ICICI Bank

• Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest state-owned life insurer, received Reserve Bank of India (RBI) approval to acquire an aggregate holding of up to 99% of the paid-up share capital or voting rights in ICICI Bank Limited, a private-sector lender.
• The RBI approval is subject to certain conditions, including compliance with applicable statutory and regulatory provisions.
• LIC must acquire the approved stake within one year from the date of the RBI approval letter dated 4 September 2026; otherwise, the RBI approval will stand cancelled.
• As of Q1 FY2026-27 (April–June 2026), Mutual Funds (MFs) held a 60% stake in ICICI Bank.
• As of Q1 FY2026-27, insurance companies collectively held an 24% stake in ICICI Bank, of which LIC held 4.35%.

Botanical Survey of India Discovers New Plant Species “Osbeckia ulotricha” in Kerala-Tamil Nadu Region

• A group of scientists from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) discovered a new plant species named “Osbeckia ulotricha” in the Shola grasslands of the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve (BR) in the Western Ghats across Kerala and Tamil Nadu (TN).
• The discovery of Osbeckia ulotricha was published in Lilloa, an international botanical journal.
• Osbeckia ulotricha is a woolly-haired flowering plant and can be distinguished from the previously known Osbeckia yercaudensis and Osbeckia wightiana by its unique morphological characteristics.
• Its distinctive features include leaves clustered at the apex and an ovary crowned with true bristles.
• The plant mainly grows along the damp margins of Tropical Montane Wet Temperate Forests (Shola forests) and Montane Temperate Grasslands.
• Osbeckia ulotricha is found at elevations of approximately 1,200–1,500 metres.
• The newly discovered species belongs to the Melastomataceae family of flowering plants.
• The plant flowers between February and May.
• The Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve is located in the Western Ghats across Kerala and Tamil Nadu, making the region significant for plant biodiversity and conservation.

• Renowned Carnatic vocalist, musicologist, and educator R. Janakiraman (S.R.J.) passed away at the age of 98 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, marking the end of an era in Indian classical music.

About S. R. Janakiraman :

• He was born on 12 July 1928 in Lalgudi, Tamil Nadu.
• He was popularly known as R.J. and was celebrated for his contributions as a Carnatic vocalist, musicologist, teacher, and researcher.
• He received the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, in 2011 in the field of Art.
• Janakiraman began learning music in 1938 and later trained at Kalakshetra, Chennai, under eminent gurus including Tiger Varadachariar and Musiri Subramania Iyer.
• He was the last student of Tiger Varadachariar and learnt music under the traditional gurukula system.
• He also learnt from renowned musicians including Tirupampuram Swaminatha Pillai, T. Brinda, Professor Sambamurthy, and P. K. Rajagopala Iyer, besides his training under Tiger Varadachariar and Musiri Subramania Iyer.
• His talent was recognised by Rukmini Devi Arundale, founder of Kalakshetra, who brought him under the direct tutelage of Tiger Varadachariar.
