Securities and Exchange Board of India Bars US-Based Proprietary Trading Firm Jane Street and Affiliates from Indian Securities Markets

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has barred United States (US)-based proprietary trading firm Jane Street and its affiliates from participating in Indian securities markets.
  • The ban is due to alleged manipulation in index derivatives, specifically in Bank Nifty options.
  • SEBI has ordered the impounding of ₹4,844 crore in unlawful gains, to be held in an escrow account.
  • The interim order, following a detailed investigation, found that Jane Street conducted aggressive, strategically timed trades in Bank Nifty component stocks and futures on expiry days.
  • These trades were allegedly designed to manipulate expiry prices and benefit from large positions in index options, violating SEBI’s PFUTP (Prohibition of Fraudulent and Unfair Trade Practices) regulations.
  • Jane Street earned ₹36,502 crore in net profits between January 2023 and March 2025, of which ₹4,844 crore were deemed unlawful.
  • SEBI has frozen debit transactions in Jane Street’s bank accounts.
  • The regulator has also barred Jane Street’s India-linked entities — including JSI Investments and Jane Street Singapore — from trading in any securities until further notice.

Colombia and Uzbekistan Become New Members of New Development Bank Ahead of 17th BRICS Summit

  • Colombia and Uzbekistan have officially joined the New Development Bank (NDB), expanding the membership of the multilateral lender known as the BRICS Bank.
  • The announcement was made following the 10th meeting of the NDB's Board of Directors, ahead of the 17th BRICS Summit.
  • With the addition of Colombia and Uzbekistan, the NDB's total membership has increased to 11 countries.
  • Current members include:Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa (founding members)
  • Bangladesh, United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Algeria, Colombia, and Uzbekistan.
  • The NDB was established in 2015 by the BRICS nations to mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging market economies and developing countries.
  • The bank is headquartered in Shanghai, China.
  • The NDB has an initial authorised capital of USD 100 billion, divided into one million shares with a par value of USD 100,000 each.
  • Each founding BRICS country subscribed to 100,000 shares, totaling USD 10 billion each, which represents 18.98% of total subscribed capital per country.

Three Public Sector Units Own 23% Stake in NSE Worth Over ₹1.3 Lakh Crore at ₹2,325 Share Price

  • Three Public Sector Units (PSUs) hold a combined 23% stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE), valued at over ₹1.3 lakh crore based on a share price of ₹2,325.
  • The PSUs include: LIC (10.7% stake, ₹61,525 crore), Stock Holding Corporation of India (SHCIL) (4.4%, ₹25,300 crore), SBI (3.23%) and SBI Caps (4.33%) with a combined SBI value of approx. ₹43,470 crore.
  • NSE’s current market capitalization stands at ₹5.75 lakh crore.
  • NSE is the world’s largest exchange by derivative contracts traded and the seventh largest globally by market cap of listed firms (as of May 31, 2025).
  • SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey confirmed the NSE IPO process is on track, with most paperwork completed.
  • NSE has offered ₹1,388 crore as a settlement fee to SEBI, which, if accepted, will be SEBI’s largest-ever settlement.
  • Acceptance of the settlement will clear the way for SEBI to issue a No-Objection Certificate (NOC), allowing NSE to file its Draft Red Herring Prospectus (DRHP) and proceed with its long-awaited IPO.

All Indian Post Offices to Accept UPI Digital Payments at Counters by August 2025: Department of Posts

  • The Department of Posts will enable all Indian post offices to accept digital payments via UPI at their counters by August 2025.
  • This initiative is part of IT 2.0, a major overhaul of IT infrastructure incorporating dynamic QR code-based payment systems for faster, safer, and easier postal transactions.
  • The Department of Posts has played a key role in financial inclusion through products like India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) but previously lacked digital payment acceptance at counters, limiting convenience for over 500 million consumers.
  • A pilot rollout has started in the Karnataka postal circle, with successful QR-based bookings at Mysore Head Office, Bagalkot Head Office, and subordinate branches.

Finance Ministry extends deadline for choosing Unified Pension Scheme and National Pension System to September 30, 2025 from June 30, 2025  

  • The Finance Ministry has extended the deadline to choose between Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and National Pension System (NPS) to September 30, 2025, from the earlier deadline of June 30, 2025.
  • The extension provides more time for central government employees to decide whether to switch to UPS or stay with NPS.
  • The Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) was launched on April 1, 2025, as an alternative to NPS.
  • UPS offers an assured pension payout and a lump sum payout on retirement, unlike NPS which does not guarantee assured pension payouts.
  • Recently, gratuity benefits have also been extended to government employees opting for UPS.
  • If the government fails to provide an option to switch to UPS, it will be assumed the employee has opted for NPS without the UPS option.

Eligibility to Choose Between NPS and UPS:

  • Existing central government employees in service as of April 1, 2025.
  • Central government employees who retired on or before March 31, 2025, provided:
  • They served a minimum of 10 years before superannuation.
  • Retired under Fundamental Rules 56(j) (not considered a penalty under Central Civil Services rules).
  • The legally wedded spouse of a deceased UPS subscriber is also eligible.
  • Contributions under UPS:Upon opting for UPS, the employee’s pension corpus transfers to PRAN linked to UPS.
  • The government contributes 18.5% of the employee’s basic salary to the pension fund.
  • The employee contributes 10% of their basic salary to the pension fund.

Gujarat Becomes India’s Third State to Surpass 1 Crore Stock Market Investors: NSE                              

  • Gujarat has become the third state in India to record over 1 crore registered stock market investors, according to the National Stock Exchange (NSE)
  • Gujarat has joined Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh in crossing the one-crore investor
  • Together, these three states account for 36% of the total stock market investor base in India.
  • As of May 2025, India has nearly 11.5 crore registered investors.
  • Region-wise investor distribution:
  • North India leads with 4.2 crore investors.
  • West India has 3.5 crore investors.
  • South India has 2.4 crore investors.
  • East India accounts for 1.4 crore investors.
  • Investor growth in the last one year:
  • North India: 24% increase.
  • East India: 23% increase.
  • South India: 22% increase.
  • West India: 17% increase.
  • India crossed the 9 crore investor mark in February 2024, and then added 1 crore every 5-6 months, reaching:
  • 10 crore by August 2024.

  • However, from February to May 2025, the growth rate slowed down, with an average of 10.8 lakh new investors per month, compared to 19.3 lakh per month in the calendar year 2024.

  • Rajasthan government launched the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Poverty-Free Village Scheme, aiming to eliminate poverty in 5,000 villages.
  • The initiative focuses on financial aid and employment support to make rural families self-reliant and economically empowered.

  • Financial Support to BPL Families: Selected families living below the poverty line (BPL) will receive up to ₹1 lakh to start small businesses or income-generating work.
  • Assistance for SHG Women: Women in self-help groups (SHGs) will get ₹15,000 per family to enhance their income activities.
  • Incentive for Families Above Poverty Line: Families that have moved above the poverty line through their own efforts will be awarded ₹21,000, directly transferred to their verified bank accounts. So far, 17,891 out of 22,400 accounts have been verified.

  • Lag in Domestic Production: Despite higher consumption, India produced only 70 kbbloe/d of biofuel in 2024, while China produced 106 kbbloe/d. India’s production rose 27% in 2024, with a 10-year growth rate of 30.4%, but still trails China’s 2024 production surge of 31%.

Government Likely to Accelerate Stake Sale in GIC Re and New India Assurance

  • The Union Finance Ministry is planning to dilute at least half of the required stake in New India Assurance Company and General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) during FY26 to comply with SEBI’s Minimum Public Shareholding (MPS)
  • Currently, the government holds 85.44% in New India Assurance and 82.4% in GIC Re.
  • SEBI mandates all listed companies, including public sector insurers, to maintain a minimum 25% public shareholding under Rule 19A of the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Rules, 1957, and Regulation 38 of the SEBI (LODR) Regulations.
  • Accordingly, the government must dilute 10.44% in New India Assurance and 7.4% in GIC Re.
  • A phased disinvestment is planned:~5% in New India Assurance, ~3.5% in GIC Re, Targeted by end of FY26
  • For LIC, the government plans to divest a 6.5% stake in tranches by May 2027, raising public shareholding to 10%.
  • LIC was listed in May 2022 with an initial 3.5% stake sale.

  • More than 500 personnel from various units of the French Army
  • India was represented by a 90-member contingent, including a Battalion from the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles.
  • The exercise was conducted in two phases:
  • Phase 1: June 18–21 in Aveyron’s Monclar district.
  • Phase 2: June 22–26 in Herault.
  • Exercise Shakti focused on enhancing joint operational preparedness for sub-conventional combat situations under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
  • Training was conducted in realistic semi-urban terrain to simulate tough combat conditions.
  • The exercise serves as a platform for exchanging best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures.

  • This facility enables the international movement of Indian sport horses in line with global biosecurity and animal health standards.
  • The EDFC implements robust biosecurity protocols, stringent veterinary surveillance, and international norms to allow horses to travel and compete abroad.
  • It boosts India’s position in global equestrian sports, supports horse breeding, high-value equine trade, and strengthens the country’s biosecurity and disease preparedness framework.
  • The compartment is declared free from several diseases:Equine Infectious Anemia, Equine Influenza, Equine Piroplasmosis, Glanders, Surra
  • India has been free from African Horse Sickness since 2014.
