Moody’s Cuts India’s Financial Year 2026-27 Growth Outlook to 6% on West Asia Conflict Impact
- The Moody’s Ratings (US-based credit rating agency) released its Credit Opinion Report on India, revising India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth forecast for FY2026–27 (FY27) downward by 80 basis points to 6%, from the earlier estimate of 6.8%.
- Despite the revision, India’s GDP growth remained strong at 7.5% in CY2025, higher than 7.2% in CY2024, driven mainly by a rebound in the manufacturing sector.
- The report highlighted that India remained the fastest-growing major G-20 economy in CY2025.
- Moody’s projected inflation to average 4.8% in FY27, rising sharply from 2.4% in FY26, indicating upward inflationary pressure.
- The Current Account Deficit (CAD) narrowed to around 4% of GDP in CY2025, compared to 0.9% in CY2024.
- The CAD is expected to remain in the range of 1–1.5% of GDP during CY2026 and CY2027.
- The downgrade in growth outlook is linked to the ongoing geopolitical conflict in West Asia, which is expected to weaken private consumption and industrial activity.
- The report noted that disruptions in LPG and crude oil supplies could lead to fuel shortages, higher transport costs, and rising food inflation.
- The West Asia region accounts for around 55% of India’s crude oil imports and over 90% of LPG imports, highlighting India’s high energy dependency.
- Elevated oil, gas, and fertiliser prices are expected to increase subsidy burdens and fiscal pressures on the government.
- Higher input costs are expected to weaken gross fixed capital formation (investment momentum) in the economy.
- Other agencies also supported a cautious outlook: OECD projected 6.1% growth, Icra estimated 6.5% growth, and EY warned of ~1% GDP erosion and 1.5% inflation rise if conflict persists.
- Global crude oil prices have increased by nearly 50% following geopolitical tensions in West Asia, further impacting inflation outlook.
