Reserve Bank of India’s Currency Printing Expenditure Falls 23.5% to ₹4,875 Crore in FY26
- The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) reported that its Currency Printing Expenditure declined by 23.5%, falling from ₹6,372.8 Crore in FY25 to ₹4,875.2 Crore in FY26.
- The reduction in printing expenditure was primarily due to a Lower Indent for Banknotes during FY26.
- Despite lower printing costs, the Total Value of Banknotes in Circulation increased by 11.8% to ₹41.23 Lakh Crore as of March 2026.
- The increase in the value of banknotes in circulation indicates the continued demand for and usage of Physical Currency in the economy.
- The ₹500 Denomination Note remained the most dominant currency note in circulation.
- The ₹500 Note accounted for 85.5% of the Total Value of all banknotes in circulation.
- In terms of volume, the ₹500 Note constituted 41.2% of the Total Number of Banknotes circulating in the economy.
- India’s Currency-to-GDP Ratio increased from 11.7% in FY25 to 12.1% in FY26.
- The rise in the Currency-to-GDP Ratio highlights the continued importance of Cash Transactions despite rapid growth in Digital Payments.
- India’s Credit-to-GDP Ratio reached a record 61.8% at the end of March 2026, compared to 57.4% a year earlier.
- The increase in the Credit-to-GDP Ratio reflects strong expansion in Bank Lending and credit growth across the economy.
- The value of the e-Rupee (Central Bank Digital Currency - CBDC) in circulation declined by 24.1% to ₹771.7 Crore in FY26.
- The decline in e-Rupee Circulation suggests that the CBDC Pilot Programme is yet to achieve widespread public adoption.
State of India’s Digital Economy 2026 Report Ranks India as the World’s Fifth Most Digitalised Economy
- The Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations–Prosus Centre for Internet and Digital Economy (IPCIDE) released the report “State of India’s Digital Economy (SIDE) 2026”.
- According to the SIDE 2026 Report, India has been ranked as the 5th most digitalised economy in the world.
- The SIDE Report is an annual publication launched in 2023 to assess India's progress in the fields of Digital Economy and Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- The report uses the comprehensive CHIPS Framework, which stands for Connect, Harness, Innovate, Protect, and Sustain.
- India secured the 4th position globally in the CHIPS Index for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
- In the CHIPS AI Rankings, India is behind only the United States, China, and Singapore.
- India's global ranking improved significantly from 8th position in 2025 to 5th position in 2026.
- The 2025 ranking was based on a sample of 32 countries, while the 2026 ranking covered 71 countries.
- The number of Internet Users in India increased by 8.8%, much higher than the 2.1% average growth rate among the other top 10 countries.
- India accounts for 19.9% of Global AI Users, highlighting its growing digital adoption and AI penetration.

- BharatPe, a leading Financial Services and UPI Payments Company in India, launched “BharatPe Flex”, a new Credit-on-UPI Solution.
- BharatPe Flex is powered by YES Bank Limited and enables eligible customers to make UPI payments using a pre-approved credit line.
- The product allows users to make daily payments without immediately using their own bank balance.
- BharatPe Flex is built around the concept of “Pay Now, Settle Later”, offering greater flexibility in digital payments.
- The solution provides an interest-free credit period of up to 45 days for eligible users.
- Users can make payments across all major UPI payment flows through BharatPe Flex.
- The facility supports QR Code Payments, Online Transactions, Bill Payments, Mobile Recharges, and other Daily Spending Needs.
- The product offers flexibility to either repay the full amount within the credit period or convert the outstanding amount into Equated Monthly Instalments (EMIs).

42 Panchayats to Receive National Panchayat Awards 2025 for Excellence in Rural Governance
- The Ministry of Panchayati Raj will confer the National Panchayat Awards 2025 to 42 outstanding Panchayats at a ceremony in New Delhi.
- The awards recognise excellence in local governance, sustainable development, infrastructure creation, social inclusion, and citizen participation.
- The awards are presented under the Incentivization of Panchayats component of the Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan.
- The objective is to promote good governance, community-led development, improved public service delivery, democratic decentralisation, and Sustainable Development Goals implementation.
- The awards are given under two categories:
- Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (DDUPSVP) – awarded to 34 Gram Panchayats across 17 States and Union Territories based on performance under Sustainable Development Goal themes.
- Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar (NDSPSVP) – awarded to 8 Panchayats for overall excellence at District, Block, and Gram Panchayat levels.

India and Zimbabwe Strengthen Defence Ties at First Joint Defence Committee Meeting
- The inaugural meeting of the India–Zimbabwe Joint Defence Committee (JDC) was held in New Delhi on 4 June 2026.
- The meeting aimed to strengthen India–Zimbabwe bilateral defence cooperation and deepen defence ties between the two countries.
- Both sides agreed to expand cooperation in training, support, and maintenance of common air assets.
- New areas of collaboration identified include Joint Manufacturing, Counter-Terrorism, Border Management, and Peacekeeping Operations.
- The meeting was co-chaired by Shri Amitabh Prasad (India) and Mr Aaron Daniel Tonde Nhepera (Zimbabwe).
- Mr Aaron Daniel Tonde Nhepera, Permanent Secretary of Zimbabwe, led a 12-member high-level delegation on a two-day visit to India.
- The inaugural JDC meeting operationalised the MoU on Defence Cooperation signed by the Defence Ministers of both countries during Aero India 2025.

- The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Narendra Modi, approved the appointment of Prashant Sitaram Lokhande as the new Chairperson of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE).
- Prashant Sitaram Lokhande was serving as Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) before his appointment as CBSE Chairperson.
- He succeeds Rahul Singh, who has been transferred to the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DoAFW) under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (MoAFW) as Additional Secretary.
- The ACC also appointed Varun Bhardwaj as the new Secretary of CBSE.
- Varun Bhardwaj was previously serving as Director in the Department of Higher Education, under the Ministry of Education (MoE).
- Varun Bhardwaj succeeds Himanshu Gupta, who was serving as CBSE Secretary.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman Chosen as President of the 81st United Nations General Assembly

- He was elected for a one-year term following a closely contested vote held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America(USA).
- Khalilur Rahman defeated Andreas Kakouris, the Special Envoy of Cyprus’s Foreign Minister for Multilateralism, in the election.
- He will succeed Annalena Baerbock, whose tenure as UNGA President ends in September 2026.
- Khalilur Rahman has more than four decades of diplomatic and multilateral experience.
- He began his diplomatic career by joining the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1979.
- He has been serving as the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh since February 2026.
- Before becoming Foreign Minister, he served as National Security Adviser (NSA) and High Representative on the Rohingya Issue to the Government of Bangladesh.

Defence Research and Development Organisation and Indian Air Force Successfully Conduct Flight Test of Indigenous RudraM-II Air-to-Surface Missile
- The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted flight-tests of the RudraM-II Air-to-Surface Missile (ASM) from an airborne platform.
- The RudraM-II missile successfully struck a predefined target under extreme release conditions, validating the performance of all critical subsystems.
- Flight data collected from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Odisha confirmed the successful achievement of all mission objectives.
- RudraM-II is an indigenous air-launched missile designed for Suppression/Destruction of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD/DEAD) Missions.
- The missile carries a 200 kg Warhead and is capable of conducting precision strikes against enemy air-defence assets.
- RudraM-II can achieve speeds of up to Mach 5.5.
- The missile has a strike range of 300 km, which is double the range of RudraM-I (150 km).
- The missile can be launched from the Sukhoi Su-30MKI Fighter Aircraft at altitudes ranging from 3 km to 15 km.
- It enables the IAF to engage enemy Radar Systems and Air-Defence Installations with high precision.
- The missile was developed by Research Centre Imarat (RCI), Hyderabad, which served as the Nodal DRDO Laboratory for the project.
- Other DRDO laboratories involved in the programme include Defence Research and Development Laboratory (DRDL), High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL), Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE), and ITR.
- The development programme also received support from Development-cum-Production Partners (DcPPs), Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Regional Centre for Military Airworthiness (RCMA), Missile System Quality Assurance Agency, and other industry partners.
- RudraM-II is regarded as a major Force Multiplier for the Indian Armed Forces.
- The missile is expected to replace the older Russian-origin Kh-31 Missiles currently in service.
- The successful test marks a significant boost to India's Indigenous Defence Capability and the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in the defence sector.

- Majorana 2 was developed with support from Microsoft Discovery, the company’s Agentic Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform.
- The new chip succeeds Majorana 1, Microsoft's first-generation quantum processor launched in 2025.
- Microsoft aims to develop commercially useful quantum computing systems by 2029.
- Majorana 2 is designed to overcome long-standing engineering and scalability challenges in quantum computing.
- The chip uses Lead-Based Materials, unlike the Aluminium-Based Designs used by competitors such as Google and IBM.
- The use of Lead-Based Materials helps protect Qubits from environmental disturbances and cosmic interference.
- Majorana 2 delivers 1,000-fold higher qubit reliability compared to earlier approaches.
- The chip's Qubits can maintain their quantum states for approximately 20 seconds, with some lasting up to 1 minute.
- The processor operates at Microsecond Speeds, enabling rapid quantum computations.
- Each qubit is extremely compact, measuring only 01 millimetres (mm) in size.
- The current Majorana 2 Prototype contains 12 Topological Qubits.

- The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), functioning under the Digital India Corporation (DIC) of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), launched the VYOMA Innovation Challenge.
- The VYOMA Innovation Challenge aims to promote the development of Open-Source, Multilingual, and Voice-First Artificial Intelligence (AI) Solutions.
- The initiative focuses on AI applications that can function effectively in Offline and Low-Connectivity Environments.
- The challenge has been launched in partnership with Current AI and Kalpa Impact.
- The challenge is structured around Sunno Sutra, a Multilingual, Voice-First, Open-Source Handheld AI Reference Device.
- Sunno Sutra was jointly developed by BHASHINI and Current AI.
- The device was unveiled at the IndiaAI Impact Summit 2026.
- Sunno Sutra provides Conversational AI Services across multiple Indian Languages without relying on Cloud Infrastructure.

SoftBank Divests 3.25% Holding in Lenskart via ₹2,873 Crore Open Market Deal
- SoftBank Group, Japan-based investment giant through its affiliate SoftBank Vision Fund II (SVF II) Lightbulb (Cayman) Ltd, divested a 3.25% Stake in Lenskart Solutions.
- The stake sale was executed through an Open Market Transaction on the National Stock Exchange.
- SoftBank sold 5.65 Crore Shares of Lenskart Solutions in the transaction.
- The shares were sold at an average price of ₹508.55 Per Share.
- The total value of the transaction stood at approximately ₹2,873.30 Crore.
- Following the sale, SoftBank’s stake in Lenskart declined from 13.13% to 9.88%.
- The stake was acquired by several leading institutional investors, including WhiteOak Capital Mutual Fund, Mirae Asset Mutual Fund, Kotak Mutual Fund, Canara Robeco Mutual Fund, ICICI Prudential Mutual Fund, HDFC Life Insurance, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, Societe Generale, Metzler Asset Management, Goldman Sachs, Fidelity, Copthall Mauritius Investment, and Dendana Investments (Mauritius) Ltd.

R Praggnanandhaa Becomes First Indian to Win Norway Chess Tournament
- Indian chess prodigy R Praggnanandhaa became the first Indian player to win the Norway Chess tournament, one of the most prestigious events in world chess.
- The 20-year-old Grandmaster from Chennai secured the title after defeating Vincent Keymer of Germany in the final round.
- Praggnanandhaa entered the final round with 15 points and finished with 18 points after earning a crucial classical victory.
- He became the first Indian to win the tournament, surpassing previous Indian performances, including those of Viswanathan Anand and reigning World Champion D Gukesh.
- After a slow start, Praggnanandhaa staged a remarkable comeback and won four consecutive games in the latter stages of the tournament.
- One of the highlights of his campaign was defeating former World Champion Magnus Carlsen twice in classical chess.
- Magnus Carlsen is a seven-time Norway Chess champion, making Praggnanandhaa's victories particularly significant.
- In the final standings, Praggnanandhaa finished first with 18 points, followed by Wesley So with 17 points and Alireza Firouzja with 15.5 points.

Former Central Board of Film Certification Chief and Veteran Film Producer Pahlaj Nihalani Passed away at 76
- Pahlaj Nihalani, veteran film producer and former Chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), passed away at the age of 76 in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
- Pahlaj Nihalani was born on 10 January 1950 in Karachi, Sindh (present-day Pakistan).
- He was a prominent Indian film producer known for producing several successful Bollywood films.
- He started his film production career with "Haathkadi" (1982).
- He gained major recognition for producing "Ilzaam" (1986), which marked the Bollywood debut of Govinda.
- He also produced "Aag Hi Aag" (1987), which introduced Chunky Panday to Bollywood.
- Pahlaj Nihalani served as President of the Association of Motion Pictures and TV Programme Producers for several years.
- During his tenure, he played an important role in the growth and development of the Indian Film and Television Industry.
- In January 2015, he was appointed Chairperson of the CBFC (Central Board of Film Certification).
- He served as CBFC Chairperson from January 2015 to August 2017.

World Food Safety Day 2026 Observed on 7 June
- World Food Safety Day 2026 is observed globally on 7 June to raise awareness about the importance of food safety and the prevention of food-borne diseases.
- The theme for 2026 is “From burden to solutions – safe food everywhere.” The theme emphasizes the use of data, science, and evidence-based policies to reduce the global burden of foodborne diseases.
- The day is led jointly by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) under the mandate of the United Nations (UN).
- World Food Safety Day aims to promote safe food practices, strengthen food safety systems, and encourage cooperation among governments, food businesses, scientists, and consumers.
- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted World Food Safety Day in December 2018 and designated 7 June for its annual observance.
- The first World Food Safety Day was observed on 7 June 2019 through a joint initiative of WHO and FAO.
- The World Health Assembly (WHA) adopted a resolution on 3 August 2020 recognizing the annual observance of World Food Safety Day.
- The 2026 campaign highlights the upcoming WHO estimates on the global burden of foodborne diseases, helping countries formulate targeted food safety interventions.

- The day aims to support brain tumour patients, survivors, caregivers, and their families while encouraging early detection and timely medical intervention.
- World Brain Tumour Day was established in 2000 by the Deutsche Hirntumorhilfe (German Brain Tumor Association).
- Since 2000, the day has been observed annually on 8 June as an international awareness campaign.
- The observance highlights the physical, emotional, and financial challenges faced by brain tumour patients and their families.
- The day also promotes research, improved healthcare facilities, and greater public understanding of neurological cancers.
- World Brain Tumour Day serves as a tribute to all individuals affected by brain tumours and recognizes the efforts of healthcare professionals and researchers working in this field.
World Oceans Day 2026 Observed on 8 June
- World Oceans Day 2026 is observed globally on 8 June to raise awareness about the importance of oceans and the need for their conservation.
- The day highlights the crucial role of oceans in supporting life on Earth, regulating climate, producing oxygen, and sustaining biodiversity.
- The concept of World Oceans Day was first proposed at the Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992.
- The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) officially recognized World Oceans Day in 2008 and designated 8 June for its annual observance.
- On 8 June 2009, the observance was formally implemented following UNGA Resolution 63/111.
- Oceans cover about 70% of the Earth's surface, produce around 50% of the world's oxygen, absorb nearly 30% of global carbon dioxide emissions, and support millions of livelihoods worldwide.
- The observance supports Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14 – Life Below Water, which focuses on conserving and sustainably using oceans, seas, and marine resources.
