State Bank of India Research Forecasts India’s Q1 FY27 Gross Domestic Product Growth at Nearly 7% Amid Strong Economic Indicators

• State Bank of India (SBI) Research released a report titled “Prelude to Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Meeting: August 3-5, 2026 – Peace in a piecemeal manner”.
• SBI Research projected India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth at around 7% in Q1 (April–June) of Financial Year 2026-27 (FY27).
• The projected 7% GDP growth forecast by SBI Research is higher than the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)’s latest projection of 6.6% for Q1FY27.
• The upward GDP growth projection was supported by strong economic indicators, increased industrial activity and recovery in exports.
• The report highlighted improvement in High-Frequency Indicators (HFIs) reflecting stronger economic momentum in India.
• Domestic passenger vehicle sales increased by 24.1% Year-on-Year (YoY) in June 2026, indicating improved consumer demand.
• Electricity demand grew by 11.5%, reflecting higher economic and industrial activity.
• India’s exports increased by 15.5%, supporting overall economic growth during Q1FY27.
• The Index of Industrial Production (IIP) recorded growth of 7.3%, showing improvement in industrial performance.
• India’s inflation rate during Q1FY27 stood at 3.9%, despite positive economic growth conditions.
• SBI Research projected that Consumer Price Inflation (CPI) may remain above 5% during the next two quarters of FY27.
• The report estimated CPI inflation at 5% for full FY27, which remains within the RBI’s inflation target range of 2%-6%.
• Improved monsoon conditions, including surplus rainfall in July 2026, helped reduce India’s rainfall deficit to nearly 13%.
• Normal reservoir levels after monsoon recovery are expected to support agricultural activity and economic growth in the coming months.

Securities and Exchange Board of India Extends Accessibility Compliance Deadline and Launches GARUDA Framework to Streamline AIF Schemes

• Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) extended the deadline for Regulated Entities (REs) to complete the Accessibility Audit of digital platforms and remediation of audit findings to 31 October 2026.
• The extension by SEBI aims to promote inclusive financial services by ensuring persons with disabilities (PwDs) have equal and accessible access to digital market infrastructure.
• Earlier, the deadline for completing the digital platform accessibility audit was 30 April 2026, while the deadline for completing remediation of audit findings and achieving full compliance was 31 July 2026.
• SEBI extended the timeline after receiving requests from industry stakeholders who required additional time to comply with the requirements of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act.
• In July 2025, SEBI issued a circular mandating all regulated entities to make their digital platforms accessible to persons with disabilities.
• The SEBI Accessibility Framework focuses on improving digital inclusion, investor accessibility and equal participation in the securities market.
• SEBI also launched the GARUDA Framework to simplify and accelerate the launch of Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) schemes through a streamlined filing process.
• The GARUDA Framework aims to make the AIF registration and filing process faster, simpler and more efficient for market participants.

Government Strengthens Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Credit Support Through SIDBI Initiatives and ECLGS 5.0 Scheme

• The Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has undertaken several initiatives during the last five years to improve credit flow to Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across India.
• Following the Union Budget FY 2024-25 announcement, SIDBI opened 71 new branches across India from 1 April 2024 to 29 July 2026 to expand its reach to major MSME clusters and provide direct credit support to MSMEs.
• As on 31 March 2026, SIDBI’s direct credit outstanding portfolio stood at ₹51,687 crore, compared to ₹37,781 crore on 31 March 2025, registering a Year-on-Year (YoY) growth of 36.8%.
• SIDBI provides refinance assistance to Primary Lending Institutions (PLIs) to enhance their capacity to provide credit to MSMEs.
• As on 31 March 2026, SIDBI’s refinance outstanding portfolio reached ₹4,50,571 crore, compared to ₹3,85,327 crore on 31 March 2025, showing a YoY growth of 16.9%.
• SIDBI launched a co-lending arrangement with Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs) to provide affordable credit to smaller MSMEs, especially new borrowers and underserved MSMEs.
• During FY 2025-26, SIDBI initiated co-lending arrangements with Regional Rural Banks (RRBs) to strengthen credit delivery and financial inclusion in underserved areas.
• SIDBI launched the ‘Prayaas Scheme’ to provide affordable credit access to informal micro-entrepreneurs (IMEs) and micro-enterprises, especially women entrepreneurs and economically weaker sections.
• SIDBI introduced the GST Sahay App to provide on-tap invoice-based (cash flow-based) small-value credit to micro enterprises using trade data and digital frameworks.
• The Government launched Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5.0 in May 2026 to provide additional credit support to eligible MSMEs.
• Under ECLGS 5.0, MSMEs are eligible for additional credit up to 20% of the peak fund-based working capital outstanding during the fourth quarter of FY 2025-26.
• The ECLGS 5.0 scheme provides 100% guarantee coverage to Member Lending Institutions (MLIs) for the default amount under the additional credit facility extended to eligible MSME borrowers.
• For scheduled passenger airlines, the guarantee coverage under ECLGS 5.0 is 90%.
• Scheduled passenger airlines can avail additional credit up to 100% of total peak credit outstanding (fund-based and non-fund-based) during Q4 FY 2025-26.
• Under ECLGS 5.0, the Government aims to facilitate an additional credit flow of ₹2,55,000 crore for MSMEs, non-MSMEs and scheduled passenger airlines.

• The design reflects Gujral’s artistic vision and versatility through a vibrant backdrop inspired by his distinctive artistic style.
• Satish Gujral had a long association with the Department of Posts and contributed to Indian philately through his iconic stamp designs.
• He designed the 1996 commemorative postage stamp issued on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), representing the theme of communication through visual art.

Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh Becomes India’s 101st Ramsar Site

• Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav announced the designation of Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh as India’s 101st Ramsar Site.
• With this recognition, Arunachal Pradesh received its first-ever Ramsar Site, marking an important milestone in India’s wetland conservation efforts.
• The addition of Glaw Lake increased India’s total number of Ramsar Sites to 101, reflecting the country’s commitment towards wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, climate security, and sustainable development.
• The number of Ramsar Sites in India has increased from 26 in 2014 to 101 in 2026, highlighting the expansion of the country’s wetland conservation network.
• Glaw Lake is located within the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh.
• The lake is a pristine freshwater wetland situated in the Eastern Himalayas and is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot.
• The wetland is fed by perennial mountain streams and supports rich floral diversity due to its surrounding forest ecosystem.
• The Glaw Lake catchment area contains:
• More than 150 tree species.
• Around 49 orchid species.

Tamil Nadu Tops India in Deceased Organ Donation in 2025; Union Government Launches 'Jug Jug Jiyo Abhiyaan'

• Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of deceased organ donors in 2025 with 266 donors, followed by Telangana (205) and Karnataka (198), according to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation  (NOTTO).
• The data was released on the occasion of the 16th Indian Organ Donation Day by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW).
• Tamil Nadu ranked second in the country for total organ transplants, performing 2,796 transplants in 2025, while Delhi topped the list with 4,564 transplants.
• Tamil Nadu has the highest number of transplant centres in India with 172 centres, out of 800+ transplant centres nationwide.
• The State recorded the highest number of Kidney, Heart, Liver, Lung, Pancreas, and Small Bowel transplants during 2025.
• Tamil Nadu performed 135 organ transplants on foreign nationals from 63 countries, accounting for 9% of all such transplants in India, while Delhi accounted for 76%.
• A total of 20,138 organ transplants were performed across India in 2025, the highest-ever annual figure, registering:
• 6.5% increase over 18,911 transplants in 2024.
• More than fourfold growth compared to 4,990 transplants in 2013.
• Deceased donor organ transplants increased from 837 (2013) to 3,526 (2025), reflecting a more than fourfold rise.
• Kidney transplants accounted for 62.03% of all organ transplants, followed by Liver transplants (20.46%) in 2025.
• Women accounted for 68% of all living organ donors, while men constituted 78% of all living donor recipients, highlighting a significant gender disparity.
• Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel stated that India ranks third globally in living donor organ transplantation, after the United States and China.
• India has crossed 5 lakh Aadhaar-verified organ donation pledges since the launch of the National Digital Organ Donation Pledge Portal in 2023.

• Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot administered the oath of office to 19 legislators as Cabinet Ministers at Lok Bhavan, Bengaluru.
• With the latest expansion, the Karnataka Council of Ministers has reached its maximum strength of 33 members.
• Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, who assumed office on 3 June 2026, had initially taken oath along with 13 Ministers, while the Cabinet expansion took place after nearly two months.
• Gayathri Shanthegowda, the only woman legislator announced by the All India Congress Committee (AICC), did not take oath during the ceremony.
• Mankala Vaidya was replaced by S. S. Mallikarjuna at the last moment before the swearing-in.

Central Government Announces Major Reforms to Expedite Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Recruitment Process

• The Central Government has introduced technology-driven and administrative reforms to make the recruitment process of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) faster, more transparent, and efficient.
• Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, Dr. Jitendra Singh, informed Parliament about the new reforms.
• Recruitment timelines have been significantly reduced:
• UPSC: From 15 months to 13 months.
• SSC: From 15–18 months to 6–8 months.
• Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has shifted all recruitment examinations to Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode.
• SSC introduced an e-Dossier System for the digital transmission of candidates' records, enabling electronic document verification and reducing paperwork.
• A new Sliding Mechanism has been introduced by SSC, under which vacancies left unfilled due to candidates accepting multiple posts will be automatically allotted to the next eligible candidates based on merit.
• Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has adopted Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based verification in the Civil Services Examination (CSE) to monitor candidates' examination attempts and improve data validation.
• Face Authentication has been made mandatory in UPSC examinations to prevent impersonation and examination malpractices.
• The Government has introduced provisional appointments based on self-attested documents, enabling candidates to join service without waiting for the completion of document verification.
• Government departments have been directed to complete character and caste certificate verification within six months. Delays beyond this period will not adversely affect the candidate's service.
• The fee for raising objections after the release of UPSC answer keys has been reduced, making the grievance redressal mechanism more affordable.
• Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) can now choose their preferred examination centres, making the recruitment process more inclusive.

• The Pacific Island country Nauru officially changed its name to the Republic of Naoero to reflect its traditional identity, indigenous language and cultural heritage.
• The name change was approved through a constitutional amendment in May 2026, officially replacing “Nauru” with “Naoero”.
• The renaming of the country aims to strengthen national pride, preserve indigenous heritage and protect the traditional identity of the island nation.
• Following the name change, the country’s international country code will be changed from NRU to NRO.
• The citizens of Naoero will officially be known as “dei-Naoero” instead of Nauruans.

United Nations Chief António Guterres Announces Methane Reduction and AI Transparency Initiatives at London Climate Action Week

• United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the London Climate Action Week at Guildhall, London and announced two major initiatives — Global Call to Action on Methane and AI Environmental Transparency Initiative.

Key Highlights :

• Methane (CH₄) is a powerful greenhouse gas (GHG) that is around 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO₂) over the short term in terms of warming impact.
• Methane is the second-largest driver of climate warming after carbon dioxide according to several climate assessments.
• The Oil and Gas Sector is a major source of methane emissions through activities such as leaks, venting and flaring.
• Existing technologies can eliminate around 70% of methane emissions from the oil and gas sector in many cases.
• António Guterres called for a new global standard for the oil and gas sector to achieve near-zero methane emissions across the value chain.
• The UN Secretary-General highlighted that 167 billion cubic metres of gas were flared in 2025, where excess natural gas is burned at extraction sites.
• Gas flaring contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and represents a major challenge in reducing methane pollution from energy operations.
• The Global Call to Action on Methane aims to accelerate efforts to reduce methane emissions and strengthen climate action worldwide.
• The AI Environmental Transparency Initiative seeks public disclosure of carbon, water and land footprints by major Artificial Intelligence (AI) companies.

Reserve Bank of India Appoints Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director

• The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appointed Monisha Chakraborty as Executive Director (ED) with effect from 3 August 2026.
• As Executive Director, Monisha Chakraborty will oversee the Foreign Exchange Department (FED) and the Financial Markets Regulation Department (FMRD).
• Monisha Chakraborty is a career central banker with over three decades of experience at the RBI, having worked across regulatory functions, operational responsibilities, and central banking operations.
• During her career at the RBI, she has served in key departments, including the Department of Supervision, Foreign Exchange Department, and the Government and Bank Accounts Department.
• Prior to her appointment as Executive Director, Monisha Chakraborty was serving as Chief General Manager-in-Charge (CGM-in-Charge) in the Department of Supervision, RBI.
• She was a member of the Technical Committee constituted to review the format of the RBI’s Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss Account, contributing to improvements in the central bank's financial reporting framework.
• Monisha Chakraborty has also served as a Banking Ombudsman, playing an important role in banking customer grievance redressal.
• She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and a Master’s Degree in Business Economics from the University of Delhi.

A. S. Rajeev Takes Charge as Acting Central Vigilance Commissioner

• A. S. Rajeev, serving as Vigilance Commissioner in the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC), assumed charge as the Acting Central Vigilance Commissioner (CVC) with effect from 3 August 2026.

• Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted the 3rd edition of Exercise ROTOR CLAP-III at the Pokhran Field Firing Range, Jaisalmer, Rajasthan on 1–2 August 2026.

Key Highlights :

• Exercise ROTOR CLAP-III was a Counter-Unmanned Aerial Systems (Counter-UAS) exercise aimed at strengthening the IAF’s preparedness against emerging drone threats.
• The main objective of ROTOR CLAP-III was to validate helicopter-based operational concepts, refine tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs), and enhance counter-drone operational capability.
• The exercise focused on improving interoperability, rapid response capability, rotary-wing combat readiness, and battlefield effectiveness of the Indian Air Force.
• Pokhran Field Firing Range where the exercise was conducted is located in Jaisalmer district, Rajasthan.
• The exercise involved major attack, transport and utility helicopters of the IAF to test operational concepts against unmanned aerial threats.
• Participating helicopter platforms included AH-64 Apache, Mi-25/35, HAL Prachand, CH-47 Chinook, Mi-17, and HAL Dhruv
• AH-64 Apache is an attack helicopter used for anti-armour operations and close air support missions.
• HAL Prachand is India’s Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
• CH-47 Chinook, Mi-17 and HAL Dhruv helicopters are mainly used for transport and utility operations in military missions.
• During ROTOR CLAP-III, helicopter crews conducted live missile and rocket firing, demonstrating precision strike capability and combat readiness.

Indian Navy Launches Final Diving Support Craft ‘DSC A24’ to Strengthen Maritime Operations

• The Indian Navy (IN) launched ‘DSC A24’, the 5th and final ship of the Diving Support Craft (DSC) Project, at Titagarh, Kolkata, West Bengal.
• DSC A24 was built by M/s Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) under the Diving Support Craft Project of the Indian Navy.
• The vessel was launched in the presence of Vice Admiral Gurcharan Singh, Chief of Personnel, Indian Navy.
• DSC A24 was launched on 1 August 2026 following full naval traditions and ceremonial procedures at TRSL, Titagarh, Kolkata.
• The Diving Support Craft (DSC) Project consists of five ships, with DSC A24 being the fifth and final ship of the project.
• The vessel is indigenously constructed according to the Naval Rules and Regulations of the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS).
• Around 70% of the main and auxiliary equipment of DSC A24 has been sourced from Indian manufacturers, supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India
• DSC A24 features a twin-hull (catamaran) design, which provides enhanced stability, larger deck area and improved sea-keeping capability.
• The vessel has an approximate displacement of 300–400 tonnes, making it suitable for specialised maritime support operations.
• The catamaran-hull design improves operational efficiency and enables better performance during diving and underwater support missions.
• The Diving Support Craft will enhance the Indian Navy’s capabilities in Diving Support, Underwater Inspection, Salvage Assistance and Coastal Operational Deployment.

Agharkar Research Institute Pune Scientists Develop Nanocarrier-Based Gene Therapy Approach for Targeted Breast Cancer Treatment

• Scientists from the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI), Pune, an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, developed an innovative nanocarrier-based gene-silencing strategy for breast cancer treatment.
• The research highlights the potential of precision nanomedicine by enabling targeted gene therapy while reducing systemic toxicity compared to conventional cancer therapies.
• The study was published in the international journal “Advanced Healthcare Materials”, providing new insights into targeted gene silencing of breast cancer survival pathways.
• The researchers developed a biodegradable nanocarrier platform based on mesoporous silica nanoparticles for efficient delivery of small interfering RNA (siRNA)
• Mesoporous silica nanoparticles are used due to their high loading capacity and tunable surface chemistry, which help in effective drug and gene delivery.
• The nanocarrier was modified with Protamine biopolymer and a MUC1-specific aptamer to achieve precise targeting of breast cancer cells.
• The targeting mechanism uses the overexpression of MUC1 receptors on breast cancer cells, improving cellular uptake and reducing off-target effects.
• A major feature of the research is the dual gene-silencing approach, where the nanocarrier delivers siRNAs against two anti-apoptotic genes — MCL-1 and Survivin.
• MCL-1 and Survivin genes play a major role in tumor survival and resistance to cancer therapy.
• The nanocarrier uses a glutathione-responsive design, enabling controlled release of therapeutic molecules inside the tumor microenvironment.
• Experiments conducted on MCF-7 breast cancer models showed effective gene knockdown, increased apoptosis (cell death), and significant tumor growth inhibition.
• In vivo studies on Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) mice demonstrated that the nanocarrier effectively accumulated at tumor sites with minimal systemic toxicity.
• The research combines three advanced approaches — targeted delivery, stimuli-responsive release, and combinatorial gene silencing — into a single biodegradable platform.
• The study provides a promising framework for developing next-generation RNA interference (RNAi)-based cancer therapies.
• The research supports the advancement of precision oncology, offering safer and more effective alternatives to traditional chemotherapy.

Hiroshima Day 2026: Global Observance to Promote Peace and Raise Awareness Against Nuclear Weapons

• Hiroshima Day is observed every year on 6 August to promote global peace, nuclear disarmament, and awareness about the consequences of nuclear warfare.
• Hiroshima Day 2026 marks the anniversary of the atomic bomb attack on Hiroshima, Japan, during the Second World War.
• On 6 August 1945, the United States dropped an atomic bomb named “Little Boy” on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
• The nuclear attack resulted in the death of approximately 90,000 to 1,40,000 people and caused severe injuries to thousands of others.
• The bombing destroyed nearly 60,000 buildings in Hiroshima and caused widespread devastation.
• The attack caused long-term health effects due to nuclear radiation, leading to serious illnesses among survivors and future generations.
• The Hiroshima bombing was followed by the atomic bombing of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, using the nuclear weapon “Fat Man”.
• The bombings played a major role in Japan’s surrender and the end of the Second World War (1939–1945).
• Hiroshima Day serves as a reminder of the importance of:

International Clouded Leopard Day 2026 Observed on 4 August

• International Clouded Leopard Day is observed annually on 4 August to raise awareness about the conservation of Clouded Leopards, one of the world's most elusive and endangered wild cat species.

• The official theme for International Clouded Leopard Day 2026 is “Clouded Leopards: Guardians of the Forest

• The observance was established in 2018 by Lauren Amos and Dan Kemp at Howletts Wild Animal Park, United Kingdom (UK).
• The initiative was launched with the support of The Aspinall Foundation, a wildlife conservation organisation.
• The day aims to:
• Raise awareness about Clouded Leopards.
• Promote conservation initiatives for the species.
• Highlight threats such as habitat destruction, poaching, and illegal wildlife trade.
• Encourage public participation in protecting one of Asia's most iconic wild cats.
• Clouded Leopards are nocturnal, arboreal (tree-dwelling) mammals known for their excellent climbing abilities and distinctive cloud-shaped markings on their coat.
• They are primarily found in the forests of South and Southeast Asia, including India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia.
