Unified Payments Interface Extends Its Global Reach to Cambodia via KHQR Payment Integration

  • India and Cambodia launched the first phase of a cross-border QR payment linkage, enabling Indian users to make digital payments in Cambodia using Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
  • Under the arrangement, Indian travellers can use UPI-enabled applications to scan KHQR (Khmer QR), Cambodia’s national interoperable QR code system, for seamless payments.
  • The facility is available at more than 4.5 million merchant outlets across Cambodia, including tourist attractions, restaurants, retail stores, and other commercial establishments.
  • The initiative is being implemented by NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) in partnership with ACLEDA Bank Plc.

Key Highlights :

  • NIPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and is responsible for the international expansion of UPI and RuPay.
  • In the second phase, Cambodian visitors will be able to make payments at UPI-enabled merchant locations across India using their Cambodian banking and payment applications.
  • The initiative strengthens cross-border digital payment connectivity, promotes tourism, and enhances financial integration between India and Cambodia.
  • UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is already operational in eight countries: Bhutan, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • NPCI is also exploring bilateral UPI linkages with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
  • Future plans include operationalising UPI in Japan, Maldives, and Greece.
  • International UPI transaction volume crossed the one million mark for the first time in FY26.
  • International UPI transactions increased from 0.75 million in FY25 to 1.48 million in FY26 (up to December 2025), reflecting rapid adoption across global markets.
  • In value terms, international UPI transactions rose to ₹330.43 crore in FY26 from ₹258.53 crore in FY25.
  • For comparison, FY24 recorded only 37,060 international UPI transactions with a value of ₹19.7 crore, highlighting the exponential growth of India's digital payment system.

United States Becomes India’s Second-Largest Foreign Direct Investment Source, Surpassing Mauritius with Over $11 Billion in Inflows

  • The United States (US) overtook Mauritius to become the second-largest source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into India in FY 2025-26.

Key Highlights :

  • Singapore remained the largest source of FDI into India, accounting for nearly one-third of India's total equity inflows.
  • Equity inflows from the United States more than doubled to over USD 11 billion in FY 2025-26.
  • Following amendments to the India–Mauritius Tax Treaty, Singapore emerged as the most preferred investment route for investments into India.
  • Mauritius lost its position as the second-largest FDI source after changes in the tax treaty framework.
  • Japan recorded strong growth in FDI inflows, mainly driven by investments in the Financial Services Sector.
  • Computer Hardware and Software emerged as the largest recipient sector of FDI, surpassing the Services Sector.
  • Increased investments in Data Centres and Digital Infrastructure were the major reasons for the rise in FDI inflows into the Computer Hardware and Software Sector.
  • The shift in investment patterns highlights growing global confidence in India's technology and digital economy sectors.
  • Despite the preference for direct investments, tax-efficient jurisdictions continue to influence global investment flows into India.
  • FDI inflows from the Cayman Islands increased sharply from USD 371 million in FY 2024-25 to USD 2.1 billion in FY 2025-26.
  • The surge in investments from the Cayman Islands is believed to have been driven by a small number of large transactions.
  • The Food Processing Sector witnessed strong growth, with FDI equity inflows rising more than fivefold.
  • Sea Transport and Shipping-related Activities recorded an extraordinary increase in FDI inflows of nearly 30 times.
  • FDI inflows into Sea Transport and Shipping reached nearly USD 2 billion, making it one of the fastest-growing sectors for foreign investments.

Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi Scheme Completes Six Years of Implementation

  • The Pradhan Mantri Street Vendor’s AtmaNirbhar Nidhi (PM SVANidhi) Scheme completed six years of operation in June 2026.
  • The scheme was launched on 1 June 2020 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs as a first-of-its-kind micro-credit initiative for street vendors affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,
  • Since its launch, more than 1.12 crore loans worth over ₹17,800 crore have been disbursed to more than 75.5 lakh beneficiaries across cities and towns.
  • The scheme provides collateral-free working capital loans in three progressive tranches of ₹15,000, ₹25,000 and ₹50,000.
  • Beneficiaries receive interest subsidy and credit guarantee support, while timely repayment makes them eligible for higher loan tranches,
  • Street vendors successfully repaying the second loan tranche are eligible for Unified Payments Interface-linked RuPay Credit Cards with limits up to ₹30,000,
  • More than 55 lakh beneficiaries have been digitally onboarded under the scheme,
  • The SVANidhi se Samriddhi sub-component undertakes socio-economic profiling of beneficiaries and their families,
  • Through this initiative, beneficiaries are linked with eight selected Central Government welfare schemes,
  • The scheme has been extended till 31 March 2030,
  • Its implementation is jointly overseen by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs and the Department of Financial Services,

India to Host 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum 2026 in New Delhi

  • India will host the 13th BRICS Urbanisation Forum on 11–12 June 2026 in New Delhi.
  • The announcement was made by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal,
  • The theme of the Forum is “Cities for People: BRICS Cooperation for Inclusive and Resilient Urban Futures”,
  • The Forum is a key ministerial event under India’s BRICS Chairship 2026, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Humanity First”,
  • India’s BRICS Chairship theme is “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability”,
  • With the 2026 edition, India will host the BRICS Urbanisation Forum for the fourth time,
  • The Forum focuses on Inclusive Urban Development, Climate and Disaster-Resilient Infrastructure, Stronger Municipal Institutions, and Digital Innovation for Better Urban Governance,
  • It serves as a dedicated platform for BRICS countries to exchange urban policy experiences, identify common priorities and strengthen cooperation in urban development,

India’s Seafood Exports Reach Record High in Financial Year 2025-26

  • India’s seafood exports reached an all-time high in Financial Year 2025-26, recording 19,72,018 Metric Tonnes valued at ₹73,890.46 crore (8.46 billion United States dollars).
  • The exports registered a year-on-year growth of 16.13% in volume, 18.4% in rupee value and 13.44% in dollar value,
  • The achievement was announced by Marine Products Export Development Authority Chairman P. Jawahar,
  • The unit value per kilogram declined by 2.31% in dollar terms,
  • Frozen shrimp remained the leading export item, contributing 7,92,647 Metric Tonnes valued at ₹49,037.93 crore (5,624.48 million United States dollars),
  • Frozen shrimp accounted for 40.19% of total export volume and 66.52% of total export earnings in dollar terms,
  • Frozen fish was the second-largest export item, with exports worth ₹5,658.37 crore (643.70 million United States dollars) and volume increasing 4.68% to 3,55,581 Metric Tonnes,
  • Dried seafood emerged as the fastest-growing segment, with exports increasing 62.25% in volume to 4,10,410 Metric Tonnes and 69.46% in dollar value to 577.44 million United States dollars,
  • Dried seafood now accounts for more than one-fifth of India’s total seafood export volume and is the second-largest product group by quantity,
  • The United States remained the largest export destination by value, importing seafood worth ₹20,263.27 crore (2,328.74 million United States dollars) and 2,79,193 Metric Tonnes,
  • However, exports to the United States declined by 10.82% in rupee value, 14.22% in dollar value and 19.51% in volume,
  • Frozen shrimp contributed 93.55% of India’s seafood export earnings from the United States market,
  • China emerged as the largest destination by export volume,

  • Brajesh Kumar Singh has assumed charge as the Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Canara Bank following his appointment by the Central Government of India.
  • Prior to this appointment, he served as Executive Director of Indian Bank from March 2024.
  • His tenure as MD & CEO of Canara Bank will continue until 30 April 2029, the date of his superannuation, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

  • Border Roads Organisation (BRO) celebrated the 37th Raising Day of Project UDAYAK on 01 June 2026 at Doomdooma, Assam, marking more than three decades of service in developing strategic infrastructure in North-East India.
  • Project UDAYAK is entrusted with the development and maintenance of over 1,457 km of road network in the easternmost parts of Arunachal Pradesh and parts of Assam.
  • The project's area of responsibility includes the districts of Anjaw, Lohit, Dibang Valley, Longding, Tirap, and Changlang, making it one of the most strategically important BRO projects in the North-East.
  • Project UDAYAK plays a crucial role in enhancing connectivity along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Indo–Myanmar Border, thereby strengthening national security and border infrastructure.
  • The project is currently engaged in the construction of strategic roads and border fencing infrastructure along the India–Myanmar border, improving accessibility in remote border regions.
  • In 2025, Project UDAYAK completed 12 bridges, one road, and one helipad, all of which were inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
  • These infrastructure projects have significantly improved connectivity, mobility, military logistics, and socio-economic development in the region.

India and Vietnam Finalise USD 629 Million BrahMos Missile Deal to Boost Defence Ties

  • The Government of India (GoI) signed a BrahMos missile export agreement with Vietnam worth approximately Rs 60 billion (USD 629 million), marking a significant milestone in India's defence exports.
  • The agreement further strengthens India–Vietnam bilateral defence and strategic cooperation, particularly in the field of maritime and regional security.
  • The announcement was made by Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary, Ministry of Defence (MoD), during the Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore.
  • The Shangri-La Dialogue is an annual security summit organized by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).
  • The BrahMos export contract includes the supply of BrahMos missile systems, along with training, maintenance assistance, and logistical support.
  • Vietnam has become the second overseas buyer of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile system, enhancing India's position as a global defence exporter.
  • The Philippines was the first foreign customer of the BrahMos missile after signing a USD 375 million deal with India in 2022.
  • The agreement reflects India's growing role in exporting indigenously developed defence systems and expanding defence partnerships in the Indo-Pacific region.
  • The BrahMos missile is a jointly developed supersonic cruise missile by India and Russia, known for its high speed, precision strike capability, and versatility across land, sea, and air platforms.
  • India is also expanding BrahMos exports to other countries, with Indonesia emerging as the next potential buyer.
  • Negotiations between India and Indonesia for the acquisition of the BrahMos missile system are in the final stages.
  • In March 2026, Indonesia finalized plans to procure one battery of the BrahMos missile system for its coastal defence requirements.

  • India’s largest Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL) inaugurated the Unilever Fragrance Hub (UFH) at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) campus in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
  • The newly inaugurated UFH is the third global Unilever Fragrance Hub, following similar facilities in the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States of America (USA).
  • The facility has been established under HUL’s EUR 100 million investment programme, aimed at strengthening in-house, digitally enabled fragrance creation capabilities.
  • The Unilever Fragrance Hub has been developed with an estimated investment of Rs 95 crore.
  • The centre integrates consumer insights, advanced scientific research, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to drive innovation in fragrance development across multiple product categories.
  • The facility will support the creation of next-generation fragrances by combining data-driven insights, sensory science, and AI-powered innovation tools.
  • A key objective of the new hub is to achieve a 20% reduction in product development cycles, enabling faster innovation and product launches.

  • DORIS is a French satellite tracking and positioning system used to determine satellite position and velocity with centimetre-level accuracy.
  • The DORIS ground beacon at IIT Kanpur is part of the worldwide network of DORIS ground stations that support precise satellite orbit determination.
  • DORIS works on the principle of the Doppler Effect, where changes in signal frequency caused by the movement of a satellite are used to calculate its exact position and speed.
  • Satellites equipped with DORIS receivers use signals transmitted from ground beacons to determine their location with extremely high precision.
  • The system measures Doppler frequency shifts from multiple beacons around the world to calculate satellite position and velocity accurately.
  • IIT Kanpur was selected by the International DORIS Service (IDS) in 2022 due to its strategic location on the Indian tectonic plate and its expertise in space geodesy.

Zoological Survey of India Discovers New Lizard Species Mesalina bishnoi in Rajasthan, Marking First Indian Record of the Genus Mesalina

  • Scientists from the Zoological Survey of India (ZSI) discovered a new lizard species named Mesalina bishnoi near Gajner, Bikaner district, Rajasthan.
  • The discovery marks the first confirmed record of the genus Mesalina in India, making it an important addition to the country's reptile biodiversity.
  • The species was discovered during field surveys conducted in August 2025 and was formally validated through morphological and genetic analysis.
  • Mesalina bishnoi belongs to the family Lacertidae and is classified as an arid-adapted lacertid lizard suited to desert environments.
  • The species was named in honour of the Bishnoi community in recognition of its long-standing commitment to environmental conservation and wildlife protection.
  • Mesalina bishnoi is a small, fast-moving, diurnal (day-active) lizard with a snout-vent length of approximately 2 millimetres (mm).
  • The species was discovered in the Thar biogeographic province (Thar Desert) of Rajasthan, highlighting the rich but often underexplored biodiversity of the desert ecosystem.
  • The lizard exhibits greyish to olive-brown coloration, distinct dorsolateral stripes extending from the neck to the tail, black markings behind the eyes, and a white-spotted mottled camouflage pattern.
  • Identification of the species was confirmed through detailed morphological examination and mitochondrial DNA analysis, establishing it as a unique evolutionary lineage.
  • Genetic studies confirmed that it belongs to the Mesalina watsonana species complex but represents a distinct species.
  • The discovery validates several earlier unconfirmed records of the genus Mesalina in India and provides scientific evidence of its presence in the country.

Ministry of Corporate Affairs Approves Incorporation of Mahindra Manulife Insurance Limited Under Mahindra–Manulife Joint Venture

  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) approved the incorporation of Mahindra Manulife Insurance Limited (MMIL), a new life insurance joint venture between the Mahindra Group and Manulife Financial Corporation (MFC).
  • MMIL has been established as a 50:50 joint venture between India's Mahindra Group and Canada's Manulife Financial Corporation.
  • The company aims to provide AI-native, digitally-led insurance solutions across rural, semi-urban, and urban India in line with the vision of “Insurance for All.”
  • The joint venture combines Mahindra's extensive domestic distribution network with Manulife's global expertise in insurance product innovation, underwriting, and agency-led distribution.

Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and Societe Generale Acquire 1.34% Stake in Paytm

  • Global investment banks and Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) acquired a 34% stake in One97 Communications (Paytm) through open market transactions worth approximately ₹963 crore.
  • One97 Communications Limited is the parent company of Paytm, one of India's leading fintech and digital payments platforms.
  • Major foreign institutional buyers included Goldman Sachs, Societe Generale, BNP Paribas, Citigroup Global Markets, Ghisallo Capital Management, Copthall Mauritius Investment, and Viridian Asset Management.
  • Among domestic institutional investors, Sundaram Mutual Fund, Nippon India Mutual Fund, Edelweiss Mutual Fund, and India Acorn ICAV participated in the share purchase.
  • The stake sale was carried out by SAIF Partners through its affiliates SAIF III Mauritius Company Ltd and SAIF Partners India IV Ltd.
  • SAIF Partners offloaded a combined 08 lakh shares of Paytm through the open market transaction.
  • The transaction reflects continued investor interest in India's fintech and digital payments sector despite ongoing ownership restructuring.
  • Following the transaction, Antfin's shareholding in Paytm declined from 9.85% to approximately 8.51%, continuing its gradual reduction of stake in the company.

India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement Comes into Force from June 1, 2026

  • The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) entered into force on 1 June 2026.
  • The agreement was signed on 18 December 2025 in Muscat in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi,
  • The agreement was operationalised in New Delhi in the presence of Union Minister Piyush Goyal and Issa Saleh Al Shibani, Ambassador of Oman to India,
  • The first consignments of agriculture products and gems and jewellery exports availing preferential tariff benefits were flagged off from Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai,
  • The India-Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement is India’s second Free Trade Agreement signed within six months after the India–United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement,
  • Oman has offered zero-duty access on 98.08% of its tariff lines, covering 99.38% of India’s exports to Oman, with benefits effective from Day One,
  • The agreement covers trade in goods and services, investment, professional mobility and regulatory cooperation,
  • It is expected to boost exports of engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, agriculture and processed food products, marine products, textiles, leather, chemicals, electronics, plastics, gems and jewellery, and automobiles,
  • In the services sector, the agreement allows 100% Foreign Direct Investment by Indian companies in major services sectors in Oman,
  • The agreement includes the first-ever comprehensive commitment on Traditional Medicine, creating opportunities for India’s AYUSH sector,
  • It provides for mutual recognition of Halal certification, acceptance of India's National Programme for Organic Production certification, faster pharmaceutical approvals and enhanced cooperation on standards and conformity assessment,
  • Bilateral trade between India and Oman stood at 11.18 billion US dollars in Financial Year 2025-26, compared to 10.61 billion US dollars in Financial Year 2024-25,
  • Oman is India’s second-largest trading partner in the Gulf region, and nearly 7 lakh Indians reside in Oman,

Centre Signs Memorandums of Understanding with Five States and One Union Territory under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0

  • The Central Government has signed Memorandums of Understanding with Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, Nagaland and the Union Territory of Puducherry under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0,
  • The initiative aims to strengthen safe drinking water supply across rural India,
  • The reform-linked Memorandums of Understanding promote a Gram Panchayat-led, service-based and community-centred approach to rural water governance,
  • The initiative is aligned with the objectives of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, which seeks to ensure that every rural household receives quality drinking water in adequate quantity on a regular basis,
  • The mission emphasizes community participation and local ownership in managing rural water supply systems,
  • In March 2026, the Union Cabinet approved the extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission up to December 2028,
  • The extended mission has an enhanced total financial outlay of ₹8.69 lakh crore,
  • The new phase, known as Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, aims to provide Functional Household Tap Connections to all 19.36 crore rural households by December 2028,
  • The mission also targets certification of all Gram Panchayats as “Har Ghar Jal” villages,

  • Marcia Lucas was a renowned film editor and one of the pioneering women editors of Hollywood's New Hollywood era.
  • She played a significant role in shaping some of the most influential films of the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the original Star Wars trilogy.
  • She began her film editing career in the late 1960s and gained prominence through collaborations with renowned filmmakers George Lucas and Martin Scorsese.
